An excellent reference guide with one weakness

First off, running is a requirement of my job (USMC) and for a couple years now I have been plagued knee problems revolving around my IT Band. Starrett's previous book (Becoming a Supply Leopard) helped me get over the worst of my injury. As a result, I was excited when Ready to Run was published because it is running specific.
Some strengths are
1. Runner responsibility. If you're looking for a panacea to all your running ailments that requires nothing of yourself, you're looking at the wrong book. Ready to Run hammers home the point that you must take control of your running in order to fix yourself. In fact, most of the methods illustrated are quite painful and add more work to training. They do, however, address problems.
2. With diligence, the methods outlined will alleviate short term running problems, as well as stave off long term problems. Once again though, you have to be willing to work when you buy this book.
3. The illustrations and explanations are top rate as usual. As well as step-by-step photos, there are detailed explanations attached to the mobilizations.
Now a weakness
1. *the reason for my 4 star rating* Ready to Run teaches you how to make your body an healthy and efficient machine, however, it does not teach you how to utilize that new found healthy and efficiency. It advocates a loose running style (neutral foot strike, flat shoes, glute dominant gait) but does not teach the movement of running itself. Do not buy this book expecting it to teach you proper barefoot or minimalist running technique. (Should you be interested in that, buy Jay Dicharry's Anatomy for Runners) Personally, the book feels half finished without a section on proper running technique as well as programming to switch from overbuilt shoes to minimalist or barefoot.

As a whole, the book is still an excellent reference for performing in-home body maintenance that empowers runners to take control of their bodies.

Why Everyone Should Read "Ready to Run"

I REALLY like this book! Kelly Starrett has done it again with the new book "Ready to Run." I was honored to receive an advanced copy of the book and it's an outstanding read. I read the entire book just in a few days as it was extremely engaging content. Here's what I can tell you. While the book is obviously geared towards running, the principles and standards apply in many other areas of function and peak performance. If you're a student of movement, mobility, and performance as I am, then you'll absolutely LOVE this book.

The central themes of the book are about how we can improve performance and reduce the risk for injury. If you're a hardcore runner, I'd say this book is absolutely required reading. I'd also say it's a must read for every athlete because of the applications to optimizing function and performance with so many valuable insights.

As beautifully stated in the book, "running is a compound, functional movement that we were designed to do in daily life." Understanding that statement, this is why it's a read for everyone. Full disclosure, I'm not a runner and I love the book. I'm a strength athlete (and also a former physical therapist), so I appreciate the principles and biomechanics that Kelly covers in detail in "Ready to Run."

The 12 standards are the foundation of the book. These standards are the required movements, mobility, and performance standards we need to meet to be "ready to run." While the standards are designed for running, they are applicable and relevant to human performance in general. They are the framework to restore poor positions, improve range of motion, and correct poor movement patterns, which is really awesome material.

The 12 standards are:

1-Neutral Feet.
2-Flat Shoes.
3-A Supple Thoracic Spine.
4-An Efficient Squatting Technique.
5-Hip Flexion.
6-Hip Extension.
7-Ankle Range of Motion.
8-Warming Up and Cooling Down.
9-Compression.
10-No Hotspots.
11-Hydration.
12-Jumping and Landing.

You may already see how these 12 standards are valuable not only in running, but in optimal function and performance. Each standard is fully explained in the book so that you understand why each is important for peak performance.

There's a ton of great information in the book related to foot mechanics and general body positioning. For example, the importance of stabilization, how to safely and effectively transition to flat shoes, how to restore foot strength and structure, and causes and fixes of excessive pronation (the common collapsed arch in our foot and why orthotics is only a "band aid" for the problem).

Think flip flops are a good way to restore foot mechanics because they're flat soled? Well, you'll want to read the book and understand the mechanism that actually makes things worse. There's many great insights, tips, and practices in a book like this for everyone, whether you're a hardcore runner, athlete, or fitness enthusiast. The book is well organized, easily readable, and has also awesome practical application "for runners from runner" T.J. Murphy.

You'll be able to take away great information you can immediately use in your running, training, and performance programs. And, of course, there are many great examples of Kelly's innovative mobility work and fixes, even with specific mobility programs.

A very unique guide that may revolutionize how we run so that we perform at the highest level and greatly minimize our risk for injury. You''ll learn how to run by optimizing mechanics, movement, and mobility. If you take away just a few things that you use, it could be game changing and the standards are extremely valuable.

As a former physical therapist and perpetual student of movement and performance, I highly recommend "Ready to Run." Get the book and apply the information, you won't be disappointed.

Ready to Regenerate? Then Read this Book.

Don't be deceived by the word "Run" in the title. This book is filled to the rim with info, insights and correctives for anyone who is exhausted from not just running, but from the "run-around" of the pain & injury treadmill.

Kelly and TJ elegantly lay out the 12 standards they believe every runner (and mover) should master. Their tone simultaneously educates you and makes you crave the corrective movements they describe. The photography clearly illustrates some very unusual techniques. And the sidebars provide a window into current studies and statistics to back up their theories.

I began running as a teen and was constantly plagued by shin splints. I had an on-again off-again relationship to running throughout my twenties and thirties. When I came across Mobilitywod videos a few years ago and studied/practiced some of Kelly and Brian MacKenzie's foot/ankle mechanics and jump-rope tactics, I resolved my own bad running mechanics that had eluded me.

Though my personal movement goals have changed (I am not interested in competition, long-distance runs or field sports anymore), I remain fascinated by human movement. This book satisfies my desire to understand why I was such a bad runner while still helping me to be a better mover.

Best Cookbook Bar None

If you are the kind of person who loves boxed cakes with Crisco icing that's so sweet it burns your teeth, don't bother with this book. If on the other hand you actually possess working taste buds, you will find that this cookbook offers the finest selection of cake recipes in existence. Although there are some very elaborate recipes in this book, the heart and soul of it is in the basic cakes and icings. Ms. Levy has gone back and actually taken the trouble to figure out what makes cake work and has therefore been able to improve on recipes and methods. Most of the recipes in this book exchange sweetness for flavor. Therefore the chocolate cake has a deep, intense chocolate-y taste that requires a complimentary icing (or at least a glass of milk). That's the way cake is supposed to be (before they added all the preservatives and moisturizers). If anyone disliked the buttercream icing they either didn't make it right or they are out of their mind. I personally don't care for icings made with egg yolks (too rich) but the icing made with beaten egg whites is pretty much the best thing you could ever frost a cake with and (as stated in the book) flavors magnificently. Ms. Levy's raspberry sauce is better and more intense than most of the sauces I've had in the best restaurants and the same holds true for most of the other fillings.
If anyone doubts that this book is a treasure I offer the simple fact of wedding cakes. To wit, how many times have you seen people actually eat and enjoy a wedding cake? Usually most of it is left over to be thrown out (appropriately). When I have made wedding cakes using this book there has never been a crumb left and people talk about it for years afterward.
Baking is tricky, it's not like cooking where you can make adjustments to fix things. I'm quite surprised when a baking recipe works right off the bat, I expect to blow it the first time out. This book is not about following a few simple steps and cranking out a good cake. This cake is for people who love to bake, love cake and want to become a better baker and learn how to make the types of cakes that suit their palate. Properly used this book can give you the tools to create your own style of cakes that will in time become identified with you by everyone who experiences them.
The Cake Bible is one of the foundational cookbooks in my collection and by far the most often used. I agree that the binding could be better but who needs photos of plain chocolate cake? Books with pictures are for coffee tables, this book is for the kitchen. I would recommend it to anyone with a passion for baking.

Invaluable radiographic reference!

Although the title of this book sounds extremely dry, unapproachable, and cumbersome, this book is a well-organized compilation of every type of unusual looking radiograph for every part of the human body. In my job as an Army physical therapist, I commonly have to screen plain radiographs. This reference has been invaluable to myself and others that work in my clinic, especially when evaluating foot and ankle films. There are several (more than a dozen) accessory bones that may be present, and these are all very well mapped out, each with a radiographic example, explanation, and key points to consider when evaluating each specific view. Excellent reference text!!

Tough challenge to go through all the pages, but that is what I recommend to all my residents in order to know what to look for in their next shift when they think the see something pathologic. That is wat I actually still do after so many years in radiology. On the bookshelf where I report MSK images and saved a good few misses for me over the years.

Stephen Covey meets Wayne Dyer

This is an amazing guide with practical steps for making positive steps in your life. He goes into more of the 'whys' and reasons behind your decisions than traditional goal-setting guides. He's also more practical and down-to-earth than purely metaphysical books. It's a great mix of Stephen Covey's practicality and Wayne Dyer's focus.
I found JB Glossinger not too long ago through a different podcast and love his upbeat attitude and bite-sized truths. I started listening to him through MorningCoach.com and learned about his systems and the Sacred Six. It's invaluable to have all his ideas right in one spot - a textbook, so to speak.
The book also comes with a free course and workbook, which helps keep you motivated to put these plans into action and hear JB talk about the ideas through video lectures. His optimism is contagious!
This is one of the books I will revisit and go through again whenever I feel like my life has strayed out of balance.

A Review from someone who has "Life-Tested" the Process

I wanted to post a review from the perspective of someone who has put the advice/practices JB outlines in this book into use. I've been reading books in this genre for years. From Wayne Dyer to Anthony Robbins, I have always found the information to be uplifting and inspiring. But the big question was always how does that information translate into real life. At the end of the day I think this is what most Readers really want to know, and what separates this book from many others. By using the approach outlined in this book I have reached new levels of accomplishment. JB's emphasis on alignment and focus management has been transformative for me in reaching goals. Goals from completing my first triathlon to increasing the revenue of my business. The approach transcends all aspects of life. In today's world of constant distraction, JB's emphasis on value oriented focus management is the most direct path to goal attainment.

This book delivers on it's promise!

If you are like me, always overwhelmed with the amount of projects you want to do but never get any of them finished, The Sacred Six book is for you. I always seem to flit about between what I should be doing and getting distracted by new ideas. What JB Glossinger’s Sacred Six book did for me is help me view my projects from a whole new perspective.
JB’s book teaches us to view our projects from a macro level on what he calls a mission. He calls it the ‘overall focus of your life at the moment, the starting point for what you want to achieve’. Because we can get distracted by the details on how to play out our ideas, this concept on mission helps to put a stop to the chaos.
From that mission we then can create the goals we think will help us achieve that mission. JB equates goals as steps to be prioritized that will fulfill our mission. Then once we have the goals ranked, we then break them into projects. In a similar manner to the goals, the projects are broken into daily tasks that are aligned with our mission.
The ‘secret sauce’ to the Sacred Six process is knowing the top 5-10 things you value the most. The reason to be aware of what you value is because they are the lens to which you make all your life choices from. Owning your values allows you to make better decisions. They are also the ‘why’ you say yes to what you do.
I am no longer intimidated by what I want to accomplish. I use the Sacred Six process to keep me on track, accountable and very aware I am doing what is important because I created a mission for it. Please buy this easy to read and put into use book by JB Glossinger. It will change the way you are successfully able to get things done.
