Phil Gordon is back, and in better shape than ever

In my opinion, Phil Gordon is the best poker writer out there. He writes in a straightforward, clear language, which is really easy to follow. I've read all his previous three books and also his DVD, and I was really afraid that he had given up writing, since his previous book was released five years ago. I am glad to say that Phil Gordon is back, and in better shape than ever.

In his private life, Gordon had gone through a quest of improving his own game, since poker players have evolved quite drastically in the past few years. And it is rare to see a poker expert publicly admitting that he had to step back and re-study the game. The Gold Book is the result of this quest.

The book starts with lots of math that will make the head of most readers to spin. But don't give up. Soon enough things will get clear as the author shows tools and techniques that will for sure improve your game. While some of them were already featured in the author's previous books (such as the "squeeze" play, a.k.a. "fish'n'chips"), this time he explains more in depth the math behind them.

This is a book that you will have to re-read several times to be able to get everything it has to offer, especially as your game improves. In the end, it will make you to completely re-think your game. And that is why this book is so good.

The only "negatives" I can see with this book is that this time the author didn't put a lot of jokes in the text. You see, the typical Gordon jokes inserted inside the book (e.g. "feeling like the time I had bad shellfish in an all-you-can-eat buffet in Kansas City") help me to memorize the concept he is explaining. Also, even though there is a chapter with some hand examples, I'd prefer to have some real examples after each concept is explained. He did that here and there, but I wanted to see more! I hope Phil Gordon writes a follow-up book only with real hand examples, just like he did with his Blue Book.

On a more serious subject, for a book released after "Black Friday" and the demise of Full Tilt Poker, I think the author should have re-vamped the parts he talks about online poker and Full Tilt in particular. For example, he mentions that Chris Ferguson was able to create a $126,000 bankroll starting from zero and that Phil Galfond also has accumulated an on-line bankroll of same magnitude, but didn't say anything about what happened to player's online bankroll after "Black Friday."

BTW, around 20% of the book is dedicated to PLO (Pot-Limit Omaha).

Phil's best and among The Best

My poker shelf has around 100 books on it,
but this one will be among the 3 or 4 that
get re-read, underlined, highlighted and
referred to over and over.

I think it's the best book Phil's written, and
I've considered all the "Little" books good.
Within the poker writing universe, Little Gold
Book goes into more depth than just about any other,
and likewise has a lot of breadth for one book.
And while I consider most poker books to be
targeted at the beginner turning intermediate
(including Phil's previous writing), this book
does a great job of covering the ground from
intermediate well into advanced.

As usual in Phil's writing, he speaks conversationally
and is easily understood, even when digging into
somewhat involved mathematics and advanced concepts.
Another aspect of his writing that I really appreciate
is his ability to look at a topic from several angles,
rather than covering the obvious points and moving on.
In Gold Book for example, he'll often make the
mathematical case for a given play, work out the logic
in great detail to prove his point, but then take it a
step further by reminding you of "meta considerations"
and opponent psychological factors that you can't overlook.
For me, I find this helps keep me out of the mode of
just "playing the numbers" and lets me visualize the other
factors while reading and while playing.

Perhaps Phil's strongest skill as a writer, and
one that Gold Book shows off more than any of
his prior books, is his ability to group and classify
information into easily remembered collections.
Going beyond the obvious groupings of hand types,
Phil further classifies things like board texture,
opponent style, tournament situations, etc.
This gives the reader a huge advantage when trying to
apply the material; it's much easier to remember and
learn and then apply it in real time at the table.

I consider myself a non-pro advanced player, and
I learned a ton from this book that was new to
me and I'm sure will be valuable. I'm glad Phil gets
satisfaction out of giving away (well, for 15 bucks
anyway) his hard earned lessons!

Phil is Golden but this one is very Advanced

From what I've read so far in the Gold Book, it seems like it was geared towards internet players, or those getting started playing on the internet (before online poker was shut down) but the information is still valuable and impressive. I've read both the Green and Blue books which were much easier to understand (it should be said that I am not finished with the Gold), but I am also not a math whiz. The math is not necessarily difficult to pick up after a few read overs, but I just can't see myself being able to apply this at a live poker table in Vegas, or live poker table anywhere with 100% accuracy. In his other books, Phil gets into how to put your opponents on a hand based on what you know about their style, betting patterns, pre and post flop, etc. With this book, it seems like you will have to almost memorize what hands your opponents are playing from different positions, and factor that not only into what hand they might be holding, but also the pot odds and implied odds as compared to whatever hand you have, how many outs you have, whether you want to differentiate your playing style in order to change gears, etc. Its just a lot, and I don't think its for beginner to intermediate players at all. Start with the Green Book or maybe the Black Book which seems very simple. Work your way up. There is a reason the subtitle is "ADVANCED lessons for mastering Poker 2.0". That being said, if you can process it and have a very quick math brain, as well as a great memory, and lots of experience, definitely get the book as Phil is a fun read and you will likely learn a lot. But on a side note, I'm glad the internet poker sites have been shut down, who knows how safe their servers were anyway, and now these math whizzes can't just rely on their geek status to win hands. They will still be strong at a live table, but they may not know their own tells, not be familiar with Casino distractions (like the cocktail waitress leaning over you with a monster set of Dub Ds to take your order) etc., and be out of their element. Still, novices and intermediate players need to be careful because these guys are out there and undoubtedly good.

Great study guide

I have completed 8 of the 24 chapters so far and have found the instructions very easy to follow and the material useful. There are hands-on instructions for 3-4 exercises each chapter, using data that comes on a CD with the book.

Covers most of what was in the exam...

In reading this book it was painfully (sometimes confusingly) obvious that is is a first edition of the book. There are numerous typos and inaccuracies in the book which one would hope will be corrected in future editions. All in all it does what it is meant to do, preparing someone to take the ESRI exam.

Good for entry level auditors and refresher all the way to the CAE.

Sawyers guider rather looks like a story book with some fairy tales in it

Riduculous!
When I ordered this book I assumed it to be a thick, detailed and precise encyclopedia on internal auditing.
What I received is a book with writing in huge printing size, double spacing (so that the pages are filled), which covers most topices superficiantly, with sentences you could find on a blog from students in a bachelor's program.
Sawyers guider rather looks like a story book with some fairy tales in it.

Better look for some articles in professional journals before looking into this kind of book.

This was by far the best pretest that I have seen all year

This was by far the best pretest that I have seen all year. The explanations are practically on a level with UWORLD and were very helpful for review during the last couple of weeks in the clerkship. The questions are relevant to the topics you will see covered on the shelf and fill in the small gaps left behind by UWORLD. I would highly suggest buying this book. For the shelf I used First Aid Step 2 CK (all of the sections except pediatrics, ob/gyn, psych, ambulatory, and emergency), UWORLD (all IM questions), and this book and I scored a 98 on the shelf.

Very easy to learn with

This book was required for a class, and for once, my college finally picked a decent book to use. Everything is completely broken down so even new computer users can figure out what to do next. In that respect though, it might be considered a bit like cheating for the chapter review assignments. Each problem breaks down each step you are suppose to do to complete the problem, instead of making the student first read the chapter then learn and figure out how to do it themselves. Reading the actual chapter becomes almost unnecessary if not for the final chapters which become harder.

Access was very complicated for me, but now I feel more at ease with it. Great illustrations that help guide you through each step. Wonderful addition to your learning library for work or just for at home use.

There are European cathedrals in almost every architectural style, including Romanesque, Baroque and Renaissance. But it is the Gothic style, perfected during the Late Middle Ages, that has come to epitomize the essence of the continent's truly great cathedrals. In this book, Schutz, an architectural historian at the University of Munich, explores the towering Gothic cathedrals of France, England, Spain, Italy and Germany, all nations of the former Holy Roman Empire. Schutz explains the complex structure of Gothic design, in which the most imposing edifices are "mere frameworks" whose soaring lines appear to belie the laws of gravity. Schutz's text is strong on architectural detail but weak on the social upheavals and theological transformations that marked the centuries he describes. However, this is a very useful art book, complemented as it is by 310 photographs and illustrations, 270 of them in full color, many of them full-page. The photographs by Albert Hirmer, Florian Monheim and Joseph Martin mix attention to detail (stained-glass windows at Strasbourg, the cloisters at Gloucester) with a fine sense of the whole. Here we see the glories of Chartres, Notre Dame and Reims cathedrals in France; Canterbury and Salisbury in England; and the Italian gems at Milan and Venice. This sumptuous book will make a lovely gift for spiritual pilgrims, art aficionados and armchair travelers alike.

The main attraction here is the inclusion of 270 crisp, oversized color plates, which capture Gothic structures from every angle, supplemented by historic, undated photos of cathedrals and their artworks and decorations. Schutz (emeritus, Univ. of Munich), a noted German authority on medieval and Baroque architecture, covers five to eight cathedrals each in France, England, Spain, Germany, and Italy. The text, though spare and basic, is illuminating. Churches in each country are introduced by a chapter-length essay and a map that notes locations. Sections on the cathedrals include an overview, floor plans, and magnificent plates. The illustrated glossary of cathedral terms and short bibliography are useful. The dilemma for selectors is determining whether their library needs another medieval cathedrals parade of greatest hits. Anne Prache's Cathedrals of Europe offers a broader and more in-depth historical survey of cathedral culture. For purely artistic and aesthetic appreciation, however, Schutz's entry merits consideration.

A gorgeous tribute to a towering art form

Probably few other works of man have caused more awed neck-stretching than the Gothic cathedral. In over 400 stunningly illustrated pages, Schutz presents the major cathedrals of France, England, Germany, Italy and Spain. The text is well written and scholarly, but with pictures like these, the text is almost irrelevant. The mind-blowing photographs of Chartres, Notre Dame, Salisbury and the rest, leave us gaping in awe at the magnificence of these buildings and shaking our heads in disbelief at the labor and craftsmanship that went into making them reality, and marveling how mere mortals could have produced such glorious works of art.

Text? What text? Who needs text?

No bout a-doubt it, the pictures are the star of this show. We get a three or four page long architectural history of each cathedral, a couple of exterior shots, a view down the main sanctuary, and several closeups of various details, statuary, and art. Most of these cathedrals are so wonderful that they could be made the subject of books of their own, of course. But this visual symphony brings us up close and personal with arguably the greatest treasures the European Middle Ages bequeathed to posterity.
The only mild disappointment for me is that not much mention is made of the gigantic lost abbey church of Cluny, which was in the late Romanesque style. One of the better uses of computer imaging these days is the virtual reconstruction of that edifice.
Wonderful books like this are why coffee-tables were invented!

Altars to the Holy Roman Empire...and Art

GREAT CATHEDRALS is an elegant and eloquent, impressive large book that addresses in pictures, drawings and well-crafted research the magnificent cathedrals of France, England, Spain, Italy and Germany that represent the finest in Gothic architecture dating from about 1100 AD. Bernhard Schutz knows his architecture and takes the reader on an informed tour of these incredible monuments, explaining with very helpful diagrams the architectural wonders and phenomena of each cathedral. Just when you think you remember the Notre Dame in Paris as being the most exquisite example of European cathedrals, turn the page and study the beauties of the cathedral at Chartres in a way that few other books have captured its majesty. The photographs of the buildings are beautifuly rendered with copious examples of the details such as the stained glass windows, the decor of the columns, and the variety of doors. For readers who are looking for a book about the psychosocial development of the Holy Roman Empire and all the permutations and controversies of the life and times of the architects that surround these monuments, then this is not the history book one would expect. Yet for concise, informed, and inspiring writing about these great cathedrals as art and architectural wonders, it would be difficult to find a more thorough presentation. This book helps us remember that the roots of fine art are in the cathedrals and examining those roots has never been more captivating!

This notion is shared by organizations such as the Initiative for Interstellar Studies and the DARPA-funded 100-year starship project. This book specifically develops the principles for the construction of a living habitat within a worldship – a multi-generational starship that contains its own world that supports colonists as it travels across great distances between stars at a speed much slower than light. Far from being a sterile industrial setup, such as the ISS, or even being a bucolic suburbia as proposed by Gerard O’Neill in the 1970s, this worldship will provide the pre-conditions for sustaining life beyond Earth’s environment, which may also lead to the evolution of non-terrestrial ecologies. Drawing on the principles of ecopoiesis and insights offered by the Biosphere 2 experiment that demonstrated what we have to learn about ecosystem construction, this book proposes first designing the soils of such a space. It should then be possible to set up the conditions that a first generation of colonists may experience in leaving our solar system to find new worlds to settle - perhaps in spreading life throughout the universe. Although the book takes a unique view of ecology and sustainability within the setting of a traveling starship it is equally concerned with the human experience on artificial worlds. Chapters come from a range of multi disciplinary thinkers who shed light on the brave new future ahead from different angles.

About the Author
Rachel Armstrong is a researcher developing novel sustainable technologies that harness some of the properties of life and has been developing a range of projects over the last 5 years that propose new approaches that are life-promoting rather than resource conserving. She has been developing prototypes and models for sustainable environmental technologies and collaborating with architectural practices and scientific research laboratories (University of Southampton, University of West England, University of Glasgow and the Southern University of Denmark). These prototypes have been recognized as having potential applications for industry and society, as noted in a Nature article.
Armstong’s interest in space dates back to the 1990s. Armstrong is project leader for the Icarus Interstellar group, working on laying the groundwork for the construction of a starship in Earth’s orbit within a hundred years and is Director of The Institute for Interstellar Studies for Sustainability and the Environment.
Throughout her career Armstrong has been recognized as a pioneer. The International Journal of Environmental Investing nominated her as among the most influential environmental academics in May 2014, and she was a coauthor on a paper published in 2013 for the International Journal of General Systems, awarded the distinction as best paper by Taylor & Francis. She has been named as one of the Wired 2013 Smart List, as one of the 2013 ICON 50 and one of the ten people in the UK that may shape the UK’s economic recovery by Director Magazine in 2012. In the same year Armstrong was nominated as one of the most inspiring top nine women by Chick Chip magazine and as one of the BBC Focus Magazine’s August 2011 edition’s ‘ideas that could change the world.’ Her TED Talk “Architecture that repairs itself” was voted as #1 on Diane von Furstenberg’s playlist and as #3 on Bjork’s list of favorite talks, heard more than 750,000 times. She was recently appointed Professor of Experimental Architecture at the University of Newcastle.

About the Author

Pat Williams is a motivational speaker, author of 90 books, and cofounder and senior vice president of the NBA s Orlando Magic. Named one of the 50 most influential people in NBA history, he is a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts and won a league championship as general manager of the 1983 Philadelphia 76ers. Pat and his wife, Ruth, are parents of 19 children, including 14 adopted from four nations. An Army veteran, former minor league baseball player, and host of three radio programs, Pat also teaches Sunday school in his Orlando church.

Jim Denney is a writer with dozens of books to his credit, including titles with NFL legend Reggie White, supermodel Kim Alexis, and radio host Michael Reagan. A full-time writer since 1989, he has written books both for adults and children, including the Timebenders science fiction series. Jim lives in California.

I loved reading "Leadership Excellence

I loved reading "Leadership Excellence." This book is so thorough and insightful. The stories Pat Williams tells and the people he writes about are fascinating and compelling. I learned so much about leadership, and I am very excited to implement what I've learned. My hope is that as many people as possible read this book and strive to put its principles into practice. I just finished the book yesterday, but I have already recommended it to so many people, and I strongly recommend it to you.
