Kirman and the Qajar Empire: Local Dimensions of Modernity in Iran, 1794-1914 (Iranian Studies), by James M Gustafson

Despite its apparently peripheral location in the Qajar Empire, Kirman was frequently found at the centre of developments reshaping Iran in the 19th century. Over the Qajar period the region saw significant changes, as competition between Kirmani families rapidly developed commercial cotton and opium production and a world renowned carpet weaving industry, as well as giving strength to radical modernist and nationalist agitation in the years leading up to the 1906 Constitutional Revolution.

Kirman and the Qajar Empire explores how these Kirmani local elites mediated political, economic, and social change in their community during the significant transitional period in Iran’s history, from the rise of the Qajar Empire through to World War I. It departs from the prevailing centre-periphery models of economic integration and Qajar provincial history, engaging with key questions over how Iranians participated in reshaping their communities in the context of imperialism and growing transnational connections. With rarely utilized local historical and geographical writings, as well as a range of narrative and archival sources, this book provides new insight into the impact of household factionalism and estate building over four generations in the Kirman region. As well as offering the first academic monograph on modern Kirman, it is also an important case study in local dimensions of modernity.

This book will be of interest to students and scholars of Iranian studies and Iranian History, as well as general Middle Eastern studies.

Zen in English Literature & Oriental Classics, by Reginald Horace Blyth

It was R.H Blyth's belief that "all that is good in European literature and culture is simply and solely that which is in accordance with the Spirit of Zen." He thereafter applied himself to the task of searching the writings of East and West in an attempt to discover that Spirit. Zen in English Literature and Oriental Classics embraces the classical literature of China and Japan and the whole extent of English literature, with numerous quotations not only from English but also from French, German, Italian, and Spanish writing. Don Quixote has a chapter all to himself, and the author considers him possibly the purest example in all of world literature of a man who lives by Zen. In English, the Zen attitude toward life is found most consistently in Shakespeare, Wordsworth, Dickens, and Stevenson. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in Zen, haiku, or indeed English literature.

R.H. Blyth was born in London in 1898 and studied English literature at London University. He traveled extensively in the East before moving first to Korea and then Japan and teaching English at several universities. Blyth eventually became the English tutor to the Crown Prince of Japan. He also studied Zen Buddhism under Kayama Taigi Roshi. Blyth was interned during the war years, and it was during this time that he wrote his first book, Zen in English Literature. He went on to write numerous other books on Zen, haiku, senryu, and humor. Blyth was a man whose sensibility took root in two disparate cultures and found a harmony that he beautifully and effectively communicated in his writing.

R.H. Blyth was born in London in 1898 and studied English Literature at London university. He was interred during the war years and it was during this internment that he wrote his first book, Zen in English Literature. He went on to write numerous other books on Zen,Haiku, Senryu and Humour. Outstanding among his works are Zen and Zen Classics vols. 1-5. Haiku vols.1-4 and A History of Haiku vols.1-2. During his lifetime (he died in 1964) his writing was considered to be controversial by many Zen scholars but he was supported by Taisetz Suzuki. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in Zen or Haiku or indeed English Literature. His writing is exceptionally fluent and easy to understand. Not only was he a sound literary critic, he was much else besides - an essayist, philosopher, poet and brilliant translator, (compare his translations of Haiku and Senryu to those of others) but also a man whose sensibility took roots in two disparate cultures and found a harmony that he was so very well able to communicate in his writing. I feel that my life has been enriched by this mans writing. Why his complete works are not in every bookshop specializing in Asian literature or holding a position of honour in the Oriental Literature section of every decent library is a mystery to me. Publishers please take note. Along the mountain path, The scent of plum blossoms, And, on a sudden turn, the rising sun!

MY MOST VALUED BOOK
By MICHAEL BAUDRIER
With a personal library of some three thousand books, I have found Blyth's Zen in English Literature & Oriental Classics the most valuable, the most inspiring, and the most revealing. Blyth declares religion to be poetry, and poetry to be religion. But that statement is, like all, inadequate. Others have praised this book highly. As have I. Here I only want to say again: The publisher (or whoever holds the copyright) should do the world a favor by making this book available---along with Blyth's other Zen writings. I want to buy copies and give them to friends, and I would never lend the one copy I have. Also, I hope somebody is going to write and publish a biography of Reginald H Blyth, because I believe his history, writings, thoughts, and teachings are of worldwide import. Not all may agree, because Blyth told it as it is ....

Hamlet vs. Don Quixote
By the wizard of uz
Few books are 'cult classics', especially those that deal with, of all things, literary criticism.
This is one of them.
Can't say authoritatively if it has anything to do with 'real Zen ' since I'm not, to my chagrin, the living Buddha, and apparently not one Zen master in a hundred claims to be 'enlightened' these days, at least not among the second generation bumper crop of American and European Zen masters-- A source of relief if you've ever read their vapid and banal pronouncements on life, death and the meaning of the universe.
Guess they just don't make 'em like they used to in ancient China.
Go sit.
Nevertheless, Zen appealed to the young Western intelligensia via the writings of Suzuki, Watts and company. It's almost a religion tailor made for dashing bookworms (Is this a koan?)
Here, R.H. Blyth gives the reader a, as Jung would say, 'mythological Zen' that perhaps never was, but should have been, and he does so in an amazing book on English Lit.
So what's your attitude to life? The heroic as exemplified by Henley's great poem "Invictus"? Or are you a child crying in the night, crying for the light , and with no other language but a cry?
That section alone is worth the price of the book, but it's in the analysis of Hamlet as the archetypal 'zen-less' Western man that R.H really springs to life.
There are about as many critical interpretations of Shakespeare's prince as there are of Jesus, but R.H. has come up with one of the most outstanding.
Hamlet, THE greatest figure in tragedy since Sophocles, Aeschylus and Euripedes put ink to papyrus, suffers from 'Words, Words, Words'--for R.H. the clue to his (and our own ) malaise, as contrasted with the 'Zen-filled man ', the one and only Don Quixote de La Mancha !
R.H's study of Quixote--and Cervantes--is brilliant, though he modestly begs the reader's pardon for including the greatest of knights in a work of English, rather than Spanish literature.
Go read.

I recommend looking for a guide to it
By James Griffith
I would give this a pass if you are anything other than a complete beginner when it comes to MS Office. It's not particularly focused on any one program and spends a lot of time trying to simulate real work. The problem is that the simulations and projects don't really apply the lessons from the program chapter that you're working in. For example, the projects for Excel consist of a few spreadsheets and a whole lot of MS Word. Same for Powerpoint. If you really need to learn a particular program, I recommend looking for a guide to it.

As a beginner's tool, though, the book could probably be pretty helpful.

More epic Drizzt--and more matron machinations
By Amazon Customer
Truly enjoyed Jarlaxle in this, although in the end he is not quite the maestro promised. Entreri is a shadow of his former self (pun intended), a bitter and angry bit part. He should have been more, but apparently he will never recover from his imprisonment in Menzoberranzan. Drizzt is more confused than ever. His disavowal of Meilikki and his arrogant hubris of self righteousness seems to be leading ever downward.
Still, he is the greatest warrior of all, and although the battles are perhaps less well choreographed (possibly excepting the fight with Tiago) the Hunter continues supreme.
But ultimately, the book is founded on the greatest of machinations by the greatest of matron mothers... And that is ultimately what frustrated me. Wheels within wheels without clarity or conclusion, a grand finale without explanation, and a yet another ' to be continued' anticlimax. Too many threads were not tied into the narrative, like whatever became of Marilith and Lolth, what happened to the House wars and the members of Dahlia's 'house' and how come they let the symbol of male independence rise higher than ever and let him walk away?
A good read, lots of twists and action, yet somehow not quite satisfying. I never quite got to the "oh, YES!!!" Hopefully he can work it all out in Hero!

Salvatore is the real Maestro! *Spoilers*
By Gamermwm (and co.)
Fantastic Book!

Although I have felt that the endings to certain recent books felt a bit rushed and questionable character decisions were made in the last quarter of certain books - this one had great pacing and was very hard to put down all the way through although it doesn't exactly dispel those same concerns.

*Major Spoilers*

Pros:
THE Climactic Tiago fight. Finally. I loved the end of that fight. Blows his head off and proceeds to drops the mic!
Catti-brie. She is given time to shine on her own as a character and I'm sure more of that is in the works despite the foreshadowing.
Artemis Entreri & Jarlaxle. Those two being a huge part of the book is always a great thing even if its not a "fun" quest
The Matron Mothers. The dark intrigue and political power struggle of Menzo is where R.A.'s novels often truly shine best.
Huge Character Set. So many great characters and many you thought wouldn't ever be brought together in any way.
There is a moment when Jarlaxle & Artemis are down and Drizzt is still fighting. Keep making him look stronger than he has recently please.
The Tiago Fight. Already mentioned it once, but it was about time this happened and worth the price of the book alone.

Cons:
The Demogorgon fight was a bit unexpected. Never thought Drizzt would fight him one on one. Not a satisfying fight in any way.
Drizzt being a tool. Whether it was the emo act or the way he was used as a tool in the end, it made him look too weak after he fought well.
Cattie-brie is OP. This is clear to everyone and has been mentioned several times already by reviewers.
Gromph. Love him being a major player in these books but despite his wisdom he is questionably often a petulant buffoon here.
Game of Thrones. Obviously an influence. Tried to spice up the controversy level with sexual actions in this book. Comes off weird.
Heroes: These once vanilla & wholesome characters are all being darkened up a bit too much at times to be believable
Bruenor. He's not around much in this book and casts some foreshadowing that he may not remain around for too long anyway.
Wolfgar & Regis. They are not present at all, but I don't know if that is a bad thing as there are so many characters are in this book.
A Mother near-death. She should have died. But that would have ruined the balance of the ruling mothers established I guess.
Yvonnel. Feels way too powerful and she is like an emo love struck teenager when it comes to Drizzt. Because. Reasons.
Jarlaxle. Always has a plan and is supposed to be the Maestro, but any notions of that seem lost after the first quarter of the book.
The Let Go. The heroes are captured but unceremoniously let go at the end. The enemy is made to look not only too strong but unwise.
Entreri, Jarlaxle, & Drizzt journey together. As great as that sounds, the journey wasn't an enjoyable one for any of these characters.

The Cons listed (though they are many) are mostly minor to me. The Pros listed all VASTLY outweigh them. Again, some questionable decisions at the end. There was also some foreshadowing of a horrible act that I hope doesn't ever happen at the hands of Drizzt.

This was a page turner for sure. One of the better recent books and I am looking forward to the next! Thanks R.A.

Maestro
By Amazon Customer
(Minor spoiler perhaps) It felt a little rushed in some areas, as if conclusions to massive problems spontaneously came out of thin air without any real explanation for the sudden revelation. I also felt that considering the massive force of destruction the prince of demons Demogorgon is as a being that he was underutilized and didn't play as big a role as I think a character such as this should. Regardless of this I loved the book as I have every "legend of drizzt" book from start to finish.

City of Thieves: A Novel, by David Benioff

From the critically acclaimed author of The 25th Hour and When the Nines Roll Over and co-creator of the HBO series Game of Thrones, a captivating novel about war, courage, survival — and a remarkable friendship that ripples across a lifetime.

During the Nazis’ brutal siege of Leningrad, Lev Beniov is arrested for looting and thrown into the same cell as a handsome deserter named Kolya. Instead of being executed, Lev and Kolya are given a shot at saving their own lives by complying with an outrageous directive: secure a dozen eggs for a powerful Soviet colonel to use in his daughter’s wedding cake. In a city cut off from all supplies and suffering unbelievable deprivation, Lev and Kolya embark on a hunt through the dire lawlessness of Leningrad and behind enemy lines to find the impossible.

By turns insightful and funny, thrilling and terrifying, the New York Times bestseller City of Thieves is a gripping, cinematic World War II adventure and an intimate coming-of-age story with an utterly contemporary feel for how boys become men.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Author and screenwriter Benioff follows up The 25th Hour with this hard-to-put-down novel based on his grandfather's stories about surviving WWII in Russia. Having elected to stay in Leningrad during the siege, 17-year-old Lev Beniov is caught looting a German paratrooper's corpse. The penalty for this infraction (and many others) is execution. But when Colonel Grechko confronts Lev and Kolya, a Russian army deserter also facing execution, he spares them on the condition that they acquire a dozen eggs for the colonel's daughter's wedding cake. Their mission exposes them to the most ghoulish acts of the starved populace and takes them behind enemy lines to the Russian countryside. There, Lev and Kolya take on an even more daring objective: to kill the commander of the local occupying German forces. A wry and sympathetic observer of the devastation around him, Lev is an engaging and self-deprecating narrator who finds unexpected reserves of courage at the crucial moment and forms an unlikely friendship with Kolya, a flamboyant ladies' man who is coolly reckless in the face of danger. Benioff blends tense adventure, a bittersweet coming-of-age and an oddly touching buddy narrative to craft a smart crowd-pleaser. (May)

From The New Yorker
In the six years since his critically praised début, "The 25th Hour," Benioff has produced a story collection and a handful of screenplays, including the blockbuster "Troy." The imprint of his film work is evident in this novel, a finely honed but too easily sentimental adventure story set during the siege of Leningrad. Lev, the mousy, virginal son of a disappeared Jewish poet, is jailed by the Russian Army for looting; in prison and awaiting execution, he shares a cell with a blowhard blond infantryman accused of desertion. When a strange colonel offers the pair an impossible task in exchange for their lives, they set off on a journey that takes them through a series of nightmarish war zones, populated by cannibals, prostitutes, starving children, and demonic Nazi chess enthusiasts. Benioff finds a good deal of humor amid the grisly absurdities of wartime, but does so at the expense of real emotional engagement.

From Bookmarks Magazine
Readers have lately been exposed to a great deal of postmodern historical fiction, stories whose focus on the past merely reveals the astigmatism of an unreliable narrator. Perhaps tired of squinting at history, most reviewers found David Benioff’s novel refreshingly clear. With a framing device that serves to warn the reader that the author’s life is far removed from that of a Russian partisan, the narrative of City of Thieves lacks much of the anxiety over the inaccessibility of the past that has plagued recent novels of the genre. Critics also felt that Benioff avoids another form of pretentiousness, the heavy-handed tone that characterizes many historical novels (particularly those about war). However, this deftness makes the plot of the novel move along far too easily; one skeptical critic compared it to a Hollywood “buddy story.” However, most reviewers seemed eager for Benioff to write the script.

Great Book - Not just another book of Historical Fiction
By A Midwesterner in Jersey
I would never have dreamed that a story set during the WW II Siege of Leningrad could be as engaging and darkly humorous as this book, but the Author has done a fine job of bringing a diverse set of characters to life, two of whom have been given an impossible mission (find a dozen eggs!) in an unbearable situation (the Blockade of Leningrad, and its consequent famine).

I have over a dozen books on the Siege of Leningrad (for a project I'm working on), and I have to say that the Author portrays the siege with accuracy, if not with full depth - in large part because the story is told from the viewpoint of Lev, a 17 year old boy. This doesn't give the reader an omniscient overview of "the big picture", but it certainly provides a very specific perspective on life in and around the city, and one well worth reading.

It's an "impression" of life during the city, and I have to say that with one exception - Lev would have been much hungrier and weaker in real life - a fairly accurate one. Readers of "The 900 Days" will recognize the inspiration for a specific scene, (Hint: Beware of well fed men in a famine) but how the characters react to what happens makes the action their own. And what characters!

The two main characters that carry the book deserve to be remembered as a classic pairing. Their interactions, observations and the journey they take on their absurd quest are one that I will remember for a very long time. Lev, the narrator, will remind most adult men of their own awkward youth. Wry, dry, frustrated and a little plodding, he is enormously sympathetic, while seemingly always in the process of doing a "Straight Man's Slow Burn" in a comedy routine. Kolya, an accidental Red Army deserter, is overly confident, irresistably charming and scatologically minded. Imagine a dirty minded Bugs Bunny come to life as a 6ft tall, Blond hair Blue eyed Russian and you're not too far off. By the end of the story, these two have formed a real bond and friendship - one that seems real, rather than forced for the sake of the story. The supporting characters are all given real weight - you feel that this really could have happened, and that these aren't just puppets the author is manipulating, but real people.

Is it serious? Yes.
Is it a war story? Yes.
Is it funny? Yes.
Is it a coming of age story? Yes.
Is it historically accurate? Yes.

It's simply got quite a lot to offer to any reader. I highly recommend it to both the general reading public and to WWII buffs.

Extremely Entertaining
By Doug
I have read some good fiction lately, but this one is special like "Catcher in the Rye" or "The Curious Incident" or maybe "The Kite Runner". Instead of telling the story, I will make observations as to why I loved it:

1. Many historical fiction novels are written from the perspective of the thinking of the time. Although it is interesting to observe how people think people thought in the past, it can be a little too un-modern and sometimes boring, like reading "Moby Dick" or some other great, but somewhat over the top book. Here, we are set back in time by the grandson who is just like us, telling the story his grandfather tells him, but with language and interpretations that are how we think about things today. Instead of finding this tool to be unrealistic and too Hollywood modern, I found just the opposite. I felt like I really was back in time and I related to the characters like they were my best friends and buddies. I loved this approach to history telling.

2. The primary relationship in the book is between a shy, 17 year old Jewish boy who is intelligent, clever, educated and a great story teller. There is a running dialogue in his head describing his sometimes ridiculous and unimportant thoughts and observations as life threatening things are occurring. His older buddy is a young "man of the world" a college boy who is experienced with women, a writer and philosopher, a handsome and sometimes arrogant guy. He puts his arm around his younger shy friend's shoulder and starts to teach him about wine women and song. It is a touching and fun relationship that works as well as any friendship relationship I've ever read. The observations of the younger as to the older's sometimes graphic and raunchy statements and experiences are absolutely brilliant and spot on. This is how life and relationships really work and the author has been able to convey these experiences in a way that makes us relive similar things in our lives as older kids taught us about what really goes on in the adult world and we're half thinking it's a lie and half believing it, yet shaking our heads. I can't think of a book I've read that does this kind of coming of age relationship as well.

3. Because the story moves fast and is more about relationships and internal observations, you would think that the history of the time is secondary. However, the story gives us a very realistic feeling of how it must have been to be suffering through the invasion of the Germans into Leningrad in the horrible cold of the winter without much good food or shelter or equipment. There is a lot of good information about the cold and calculated way of the Nazis and the underfunded and yet heroic attempts of the Russian people to fend them off. And yet, as important as the historical setting of the book is, the thing that makes it work well is the commentary and thoughts of our two friends and eventually heroes.

4. There are many other great characters in the book from the brilliant and interesting Nazi leader, an intense and talented young female sniper, and the spoiled and wealthy man who sends them on their ridiculously trivial mission in the first place.

This book is the reason you read fiction.

I am the yegg man
By Lonya
David Benioff's "City of Thieves" is something of a coming-of-age tale with a twist. The twist is the fact that the tale is set in the besieged city of Leningrad in January, 1942. It is a city at war surrounded by the German army. The city is under martial law but its people are starving and fighting for food and even cannibalism is the inevitable result. The two `heroes' of the story, Lev Beniov and Kolya Vlasov are each picked up by the Red Army for crimes against the state. Lev is caught looting (taking the knife from a dead German soldier). Kolya, already a soldier is picked up and accused of desertion. Both crimes are grounds for immediate execution but the two boys are thrown together and given a `secret mission' by a Red Army officer, Colonel Grechko, who agrees to release them on the condition that they steal two dozen eggs in time for his daughter's wedding. The two dozen eggs are essential to make her a wedding cake. If they fail, they will be hunted down and shot. And with that bizarre quest ringing in their ears they are let go and sent out to scour Leningrad and the surrounding countryside in a quest for enough eggs to save their lives.

I liked City of Thieves for a number of reasons. First, Benioff does an excellent job setting the story up. It begins as a narrative of his own life as a writer and then evolves into getting his grandfather Lev to tell him the story of his experience during the war. All the author knows is that "my grandfather, the knife fighter, killed two Germans before he was eighteen". The story unfolds as a narrative told to his grandson. Second, the characters of Lev and Kolya were well-drawn and engaging even if Lev and Kolya did play into a couple of stereotypes, Lev the shy, quiet, intelligent Russian of Jewish descent is scrawny, short, and horribly shy around girls and seems to be able to do no more than dream wistfully of some dreamlike romantic encounters when he gets older. Kolya is handsome, tall, athletic and an accomplished Romeo. He has, if even some of his stories are true, become quite accomplished in the art of seduction. Third, the plot is well designed and well thought out. This seemingly bizarre search for eggs takes them through the dangerous streets of Leningrad into German-occupied territory where they meet up with a local group of partisans. Each story unfolds as a self-contained vignette but each has its own climactic moment that propels the reader into the next chapter. Last, Benioff has done an excellent job in creating a historically accurate picture of Leningrad during its siege. I've read a lot of non-fiction accounts of life in Leningrad, Stalingrad, and Moscow during the early years of WWII and nothing in this novel strikes me as out of touch with life during the siege including the Colonel's request for two dozen eggs.

The outcome of the story may be thought of by some as predictable but I found the ending more than satisfying even if some of the `results' did not take me totally by surprise.

I think City of Thieves is an excellent story and well worth reading. L. Fleisig

Children Of The Second Birth: What We Used to Be Like, What Happened, and What We Are Like Now, by Samuel M. Shoemaker

An early Sam Shoemaker book originally published in the 1920s, Children of the Second Birth is filled with stories of men and women who had their lives changed by turning to God; stories of people who, under the guidance of Sam, utilized the Oxford Group principles and found miracles. These men and women came from the depths of desperation and despair to places of happiness and joy. The touching journeys that they went through gave others the hope that they too could have a new life filled with peace and serenity. People today can achieve the same results as the people mentioned in this book. All that is required is to follow what they did. May these true-life accounts help you or your loved ones find the Happiness of God.

About the Author
Carl "Tuchy" Palmieri was born in 1942 in an old mansion belonging to the former mill owner of the factory where his father worked. His family was one of six related families that occupied the mansion. The second son of Italian immigrants, Carl grew up in Westport, Connecticut. After receiving a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Bridgeport he began his career marketing and installing accounting computers for the Burroughs Corporation. Twenty-one years later, in 1987, he started his own computer business. Carl is also the author of a series of self-help books. Today Carl lives with his wife, Susan, in Fairfield, Connecticut. He has three children, two stepchildren, and 12 grandchildren. His nickname, Tuchy, comes from having been one of three Carls in his family. There was a "Big Carl," a "Carl the Twin," and "Carluch," which meant "Little Carl." "Carluch" evolved into "Carlatuch," "Tuch," and finally, "Tuchy."

An inspiration reborn
By Blue Cobia
I would like to thank Tuchy Palmieri and Healing-habits.com for finding and republishing Children of the Second Birth by S. M Shoemaker Jr. Since Mr. Shoemaker had originally written and compiled this book it had gone out of print and without this republishing would not be readily available for us to read today. Children of the Second Birth is a collection of 18 testimonials/ histories of how ordinary people have been transformed by bringing Christ into their lives. It also shows us how these changed lives affect and change others lives. Many of these people were good church going people to start out with but had not received the fullness of giving themselves to Christ. The book is easy to read and for those with short time spans available for reading each chapter is a complete story unto itself. Although the book was written back in the 1920's the stories are still relevant and touching today. I hope many more will read and be inspired by this book for years to come.

A Ray of Hope for Lost Souls
By G. Reba
Stories shared from the heart of the "reformed" man with a bright future ahead. "Children of the Second Birth" is shown the light of another day through the republishing efforts of Tuchy Palmieri, who himself has developed the knack for rescuing obscure titles that many have not had the pleasure of seeing. The life experiences shared within its pages speak to the soul, reaching for the dark places some may share with the many narrators. Alas, it is the human condition...we all struggle with temptation in its many forms each and every day. It is the strength we find within ourselves, our beliefs, our morals, our family ties, which keep us, grounded and aid us in rising beyond our current conditions.

One story, entitled "What the Law Could Not Do", tells of a young man making many life-altering mistakes, yet surviving to become an inspiration to all those within his reach. In particular, this tale imparts that one start in the belief of religion at their own level of understanding and acceptance rather than an "all or none" mindset. In this way, it becomes personal, relatable, not a forced attribute that never really adapts to the person. Take a moment to see through another's eyes, and just maybe, gain some clarity of your own. No Longer Lost
By J. Sabin
If it weren't for Tuchy Palmieri, there would be lots of great stories lost to time. Fortunately for us, his passion for reprinting great stories, biographies, and quotes is not waning. We are all blessed by the "dreadful perpetuity of print." Supported by the Healing-Habits organization, he continues to find great literature that will inspire people to be better.

Samuel Shoemaker had a great desire to spur others to spiritually deep places. He did that through many different venues, and the printed books might be one of his greatest gifts to us. When I read these stories of faith, I was reminded that the struggles of modern man are not terribly modern. Humanity has always fought with the Devil to have a closer relationship with its creator and these stories are a testimony to that fact.

Buy this book. Read it one story at a time. It won't be hard for you to find ways to relate to the people Shoemaker shares, even if they did live in the early 20th century. Don't be afraid to let go of your post-modern self to discover a deeper truth within. This book can lead you there.
