Most practical author I've read on the subject!

After all these years this is one of my most highly recommended books for married couples. It's an excellent accompaniment to Love Life For Every Married Couple, also by Dr. Wheat. My observation is that he sheds better light on building and maintaining a marriage than many theologians are doing. Very practical and refreshing in confusing days, even though originally written decades ago. I've used it in many cross-cultural situations and find his books trans-cultural because of how he promotes biblical principles for marriage without compromise. There are no shortcuts or magic formulas to a healthy marriage, and Dr.Wheat confirms that. Highly recommend The First Years of Forever by Wheat for new or engaged couples, and then his other two books early in marriage... and after 20, 30, or 40 years!

About the Author
Jim Melton is editor of all parts of ISO/IEC 9075 (SQL) and is a representative for database standards at Oracle Corporation. Since 1986, he has been his company's representative to ANSI INCITS Technical Committee H2 for Database and a US representative to ISO/IEC JTC1/SC32/WG3 (Database Languages). In addition, Jim has participated in the W3C's XML Query Working Group since 1998 and is currently co-Chair of that Working Group. He is also Chair of the WG's Full-Text Task Force, co-Chair of the Update Language Task Force, and co-editor of two XQuery-related specifications. He is the author of several SQL books.

Alan Simon is a leading authority on data warehousing and database technology. He is the author of 26 books, including the previous edition of this book and the forthcoming Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence for e-Commerce, available from Morgan Kaufmann Publishers in early 2001. He currently provides data warehousing-related consulting services to clients.

A very useful source of information

This is a very useful book, and every professional user of SQL should read it. The authors demonstrate a clear understanding of the subject matter, and their writing style, with good examples, down-to-earth explanations, and the occasional touch of humor, is simply enjoyable. A particularly helpful feature of this book, is that syntax is shown in easy-to-read railroad diagrams.
It would have been helpful if the index was organized in such a way that one could immediately locate the railroad diagram for a given SQL statement. A separate list of railroad diagrams would also be nice. And although I consider heavy reliance on defaults to be bad programming practice, I would have appreciated it if just a quick look at a railroad diagram told me what defaults, if any, applied for the statement in question.
Any author of books or articles must have his or her target audience in mind. For example, what may be an excellent article for a trade magazine, would almost certainly be rejected by a scientific journal. Thus, when judging this book one must keep in mind the perspective of its authors. If you are looking for an academic textbook with emphasis on scientific rigor, then this book will disappoint you. It is pretty obvious that is not what this book was meant to be. If, on the other hand, you want a practically oriented book that will help you do your job in a better way, then this is a great place to start.
Having worked with databases and related technologies for 18 years, I have seen so many books where the number of pages outweigh the knowledge of their authors by a factor of 2 or more (and just in case there are any publishers out there listening; computer professionals are sick and tired of having to read through hundreds of pages of blah-blah-blah in order to find the information we are looking for). This book is different. It contains 394 pages of ordinary chapters, followed by 133 pages of appendices, and the signal-to-noise ratio in all these pages is excellent.
If you are an application programer, a database administrator, or some other kind of database practitioner, and you are serious about your work, then there are some books I would consider more or less mandatory reading. This is one of them.

Has its good points, but look for something better.

Given the first author's position as editor of the SQL92 standard and the association with Jim Gray, this book has been a surprising disappointment. The back cover of my edition describes it as "a valuable reference", states that it will "clarify the differences between SQL89 and SQL92", and targets it to both newcomers to SQL and experienced programmers. On the positive side, it is attractively typeset, the paragraphs individually are readable, and the railroad-track syntax diagrams are attractive. Taken as a whole however, "Understanding the new SQL" falls down.
As a reference, it frustrates. A good reference needs a good index, but the attractive railroad-track diagrams are not set off from other entries in the index, greatly slowing searches. And while there is a complete grammar for SQL92 in an appendix, its organization defies use as a reference.
The index is generally inadequate as well. For example, most operator char! acters are not indexed at all, and the word "operators" only indexes a peripheral subject. I have yet to determine the stance of the standard on case-sensitivity.
Comparison with SQL89 appears only occasionally in the body of the book. Most of it is in a laundry list in an appendix and not useful for reference. The discussion is sometimes less than rigorous or uncritical, for example dismissing the implementation-defined precision of INTEGER in a single sentence. As another example, only in the discussion of LIKE is treatment of trailing blanks by the related '=' operator discussed. The book is organized generally by language features and syntax, and is not as strong in moving from problem to solution.

Glenn Beck: I know why I was drawn to reading this series, but what inspired you to write it?

Richard Paul Evans: Two things inspired Michael Vey. First, after writing literary novels for more than two decades, I wanted to write something just for the sheer joy of it. I’ve always loved superhero stories. When I was a boy I used to rake leaves for the neighbors for money to buy comic books. So writing Michael Vey was personally satisfying. Second, I felt like the Young Adult genre had been overrun by vampire- and dystopian-themed books. RPE: Good question. After more than 75 years of comic books, it wasn’t easy finding a unique superpower—and Michael Vey isn’t the first to use electricity. But once I came up with the idea to focus all the youth’s powers around electricity, I was able to create something that I felt was both entertaining and distinct.

GB: What’s the best story you’ve heard from other parents about their kids being introduced to the books?

RPE: While I’ll never tire of hearing that the Michael Vey series got a child to read, my favorite story came from a parent of a youth struggling with severe Tourette’s Syndrome. Her child decided that if Michael Vey could face his Tourette’s with courage then so could she. This mother said the book made a remarkable difference in her child’s self-esteem and social life at school.

GB: Michael Vey has Tourette’s syndrome and isn't necessarily the “cool kid” in school. In other words, he’s not your typical hero. Why didn’t you make him the quarterback/prom king/valedictorian that most readers are used to?

RPE: I wanted a hero that the average reader could relate to. I’ve never believed that the real heroes of this world have perfect physiques and bulging muscles. A hero’s power comes from the heart not the biceps. I wanted Michael Vey to exemplify that.

GB: The big reveal of why these kids are being hunted is really unique and original—it's not wizards or angels or vampires. Where did you get this idea?

RPE: Once I developed a plausible explanation for how these youths developed their particular mutation, it opened up an entire world of social, ethical, and political options to explore. The direction the story line can follow is infinite in possibility.

GB: Every time my kids read another book in the series they ask me this, so now I get to finally ask you: If you had to pick one of the kids’ powers to have yourself, which would it be and why?

RPE: Frankly, I’d love to have any of the Electric kids’ powers (except Nichelle’s), but, from a practical standpoint, I’d have to go with Taylor’s. The ability to reboot people at any moment would give you a tremendous amount of power over any situation. (Imagine Taylor at the presidential debates!) And reading minds would definitely come in handy—especially my wife’s.

GB: I know there’s a lot more still to come in this series. Do you have the whole thing mapped out in your head already or does it come to you over time?

RPE: Since the moment I began writing Michael Vey, the series has felt like a gift to me. I have some general ideas on where the series will go over the seven books and a pretty good idea at how it will conclude, but the details still come to me like manna—just enough for the day.

Awesome third book in the series.

This was the third book in the series and it did not disappoint. I bought the first one for my son then we started reading them together. The first, second now the third and now we can't wait for the next one. If the Jade Dragon is a page turner like this one, it I will be reading day and night!

Can't believe the action that Richard Paul Evans packs into these novels. I like them because I don't have to worry about foul language or gratuitous sex. The novels have teenagers fighting evil and winning battles. We always know that later in the series, they will win the war.

Book 3 Still holds Reader's Interest

Enjoyable for young pre- and teen aged readers, proof was stated by nephew of this age. Bought extra copy and was shared among my nephew's friends. Nephew stated he used this book as independent reading material for school.
