Enough: Staying Human in an Engineered Age, by Bill McKibben

From the bestselling author of The End of Nature comes a passionate plea to limit the technologies that could change the very definition of who we are

We are on the verge of crossing the line from born to made, from created to built. Sometime in the next few years, a scientist will reprogram a human egg or sperm cell, spawning a genetic change that could be passed down into eternity. We are sleepwalking toward the future, argues Bill McKibben, and it’s time to open our eyes.

In The End of Nature, nearly fifteen years ago, McKibben demonstrated that humanity had begun to irrevocably alter—and endanger—our environment on a global scale. Now he turns his eye to an array of technologies that could change our relationship not with the rest of nature but with ourselves. He explores the frontiers of genetic engineering, robotics, and nanotechnology—all of which we are approaching with astonishing speed—and shows that each threatens to take us past a point of no return. We now stand at a critical threshold, poised between the human past and a post-human future.

Ultimately, McKibben offers a celebration of what it means to be human, and a warning that we risk the loss of all meaning if we step across the threshold. His wise and eloquent book argues that we cannot forever grow in reach and power—that we must at last learn how to say, “Enough.”

From Publishers Weekly
In 1989, McKibben published The End of Nature, a gorgeously written and galvanizing book about the true cost of global warming, the destruction of the ozone layer and other man-made ills-the loss of wild nature and with it the priceless aspect of our humanity that evolved to listen to and heed it. Now McKibben applies the same passion, scholarship and free-ranging thought to a subject that even committed environmentalists have avoided. Here he tackles what it means to be human. Reporting from the frontiers of genetic research, nanotechnology and robotics, he explores that subtle moral and spiritual boundary that he calls the "enough point." Presenting an overview of what is or may soon be possible, McKibben contends that there is no boundary to human ambition or desire or to what our very inventions may make possible. In an absorbing and horrifying montage of images, he depicts microscopic nanobots consuming the world and children born so genetically enhanced that they will never be able to believe that they reach for the stars as pianists or painters or long-distance runners because there is something unique in them that has a passion to try. Indeed, in the view of the most unbridled "technoutopians," the day of the robotically striving human is already here. What does set a human being apart from other beings, McKibben argues, is our capacity for restraint-and even for finding great meaning in restraint. "We need to do an unlikely thing: We need to survey the world we now inhabit and proclaim it good. Good enough." McKibben presents an uncompromising view, and an essential view. Readers will come away from his latest brilliantly provocative work shaking their heads at the possible future he portrays, yet understanding that becoming a pain-free, all-but-immortal, genetically enhanced semi-robot may be deeply unsatisfactory compared to being an ordinary man or woman who has faced his or her fear of death to relish what is. This is a brilliant book that deserves a wide readership.

From Booklist
McKibben (The End of Nature, 1989) turns a passionate and revealing spotlight on our headlong rush into technology. He explains an array of procedures--including germline engineering and therapeutic cloning--that represent a slippery slope. For although they hold the promise to cure disease, they also offer the option of "improving" or "perfecting" human beings, providing the ability to choose a child's sex, boost intelligence, or implant a predisposition to music. If we're not careful, we could end up engineering our children to the point that they're no longer human, he cautions. Technological advancements are proceeding so rapidly that we will soon need to make decisions about how much technology is enough. McKibben makes genetic engineering, robotics, and nanotechology understandable even to those readers who are not techno-savvy, and he makes a strong and compelling case for examining the medical, social, ethical, and philosophical arguments against certain technological advancements that come eerily close to leaving behind humanness and, thus, all the intangible irrationalities that make us who we are. This is a disturbing though ultimately optimistic book that explores the possibility of technology replacing humanity and rouses within us the impulse to declare: enough. Vanessa Bush

Review
“Bill McKibben has produced a book that is both a sequel and an equal to his brilliant The End of Nature. Enough is an ambitious and important book.” —Los Angeles Times Book Review

“Without question, this is one of the most important books of the year. McKibben deserves to be read, to be discussed, to be heard.” —San Diego Union-Tribune

“[A] brave and luminous book . . . Bill McKibben understands genetics—but he knows poetry, too.” —David Gelernter, Wired

“Bill McKibben has done a top-notch job of researching and writing about one of the most important topics of the current age. Enough is an important book and needs to be read by everyone with an interest in keeping the human future human.” —The Weekly Standard

“Fiercely important . . . the most thought-provoking piece of non-fiction I’ve read in a long time.” —The Globe and Mail (Toronto)

“In this wise, well-researched, and important book, Bill McKibben addresses the burning philosophical question of the new century, and the one that counts for the long haul: how to control the technoscientific juggernaut before it dehumanizes our species.” —E. O. Wilson, author of The Future of Life

“In Enough, McKibben shines his powerful light on another momentous change that is upon us: the ability to re-engineer ourselves and therefore the very meaning of human identity. If he is right, then humankind stands on a moral and existential threshold—or cliff. We would do well as a society to weigh his bracing argument before taking another step.” —Michael Pollan, author of The Botany of Desire

Enough: Staying Human in an Engineered Age by Bill McKibben
By Hana DeHaya
Although this book should get 5 stars for imagination and style,
I disagree with its premise.
We humans already have built into our systems, the trait of curiosity as well as the strong desire to survive as a species.
We're going to move forward with genetic research, stem cell
research and cloning organs in the 21st Century. We're also
excited with the prospect of space travel and intelligent life
elsewhere in the universe.
The author thinks that we must stop developing our human-ness, at
this time because we need to stick with what's "natural."
Is it natural to have the ability to cure all diseases by manipulating genes and stem cells, but NOT do it?...for fear of
not being "natural?" Is it natural NOT to live 200 years, if we
have it within our power to do so? As long as we solve the
problems of overpopulation, what's wrong with living 200 years?
At this time, we're replacing damaged human parts with new high
tech man-made materials? Is it unnatural to have a prosthetic
arm, leg, hand, etc.? In some cases, we're also using animal
cells to cure human brain diseases. Some people have used
transplanted animal hearts. Is this unnatural...to want to live,
no matter what? Would it be better to die then to have an
animal or prosthetic part?
Cloning human organs simply refines the above procedures, and
nothing more.
In the 21st Century we already know that machines are putting many out of work. We know that computers can "think" faster than most humans, and yet we want them to make our lives more
convenient. Our desire to choose our own destiny could come to
an end if we were NOT to enhance our brain power vis a vie these
existing machines. What is wrong with that?
Is it unnatural to want to have higher intelligence than the machines in our lives?
Through the development of machines, computer chips, satellites,
space ships, and the e*world in general, we have changed our
environment. The "medium is the message" should be pretty clear
here. Now, we need to adapt to the very environment that we
have wrought. The reason that homo sapiens have come this far, is the ability of our brains to adapt to an assortment of environments. Of course, we need to develop our intelligence so
that we are the masters of the machines and...beyond. Wouldn't
it be grossly unnatural NOT to be smarter than the machines we
build?
There's no doubt that most humans who think about space travel,
are smart enough, in the present time, to know that we humans
will NOT be able to do this, in our present form. If we ever reach the point of being able to chart a destination...it wouldn't be possible to arrive at that goal, in our present state. No doubt, to send a space ship out into the universe to
some distant planet or moon with humans on board to inhabit that
celestial place, our Planet Earth ancestors will have to create
a nearly new species... a more sophisticated primate. Perhaps,
humanoids with highly enhanced brains and no legs will navigate
a cargo of suspended fertilized eggs, as well as humans long in
hibernation. But how is this not natural? Isn't it very natural to want to explore our universe? Isn't it extremely
natural to want to survive a collision with a meteor or comet, if
it's "humanly" possible?
It would seem that NOT to do all of the above, would hold back
our VERY NATURAL human drives of survival and exploration.
I applaud the author for pointing out some pitfalls that technology might lead us into. Taking these into consideration,
we humans, have no choice but to move forward into gradually
expanding brave new worlds, which is what we have always done, in
order to make our species stronger and able to survive.

Huh?
By Kevin Currie-Knight
This book has a goal: to scare you. That, in itself, doesn't make the book bad. While I am pro-biotech, I appreciate the fact that people are allowed to read and explore a myriad of positioins before they make up their mind. What bothers me, then, is that McKibben is so intent on scaring us into submission that he is either a.) puposely exaggerating and misunderstanding his information and doesn't care, or b.)literally doesn't know 'enough' about what he's writing so as not to notice his caricatures.
For instance - amd most troubleing -, well over 2/3rds of his citations are gotten from newspapers, trade magazines, and (a little better but not by a lot) popular science articles. So we get treated to all the exaggerated stories about the nutty little cult-like submovements that treat biotech as an unmitigated utopia while under the impression that this is the mainstream view. Well, the New York TImes is in the business of selling newspapers and reporting stories that can help them do it. If we haven't noticed, they are much less concerned with accuracy. But McKibben's index is not only littered with these types of exaggerated stories, but virtually all are gotten from the newspapers and trade rags. Not very professional.
Second (and partly due to the above) Mckibben is wont to grossly overexaggerate fears of genetic determinism. IF we can select genes for success, he says, then children will be comodities!!! But in saying this, he doesn't realisze - or doesn't let on - that a.) there is no gene combo for 'success' (such a blanket phrase), b.) success involeves quite a bit of 'luck' and evironment in addition to genetic factors; c.) a genetic tweek is by no means a gaurentee of superiority in a particular area. McKibben, though, doesn't know this; my guess becasue he is quoting from trade magazines that like to write article on the "gene for x" in order to give us a shocking and juicy cover story. "Beanbag genetics" is dead an someone forgot to tell McKibbon that he is more of a gentic determinist than even most genetic determinist are.
Third he writes aobut his fears that biotech will 'dehumanize' us. We get this alot and McKibben swears he is not a luddite. But the argument fits the bill perfectly: Limitations are what makes us human; the better humans are made to perform, the less human they'll be. McKibben says that we should just be happy with the progress we've made so far (after all, eradication of limitions in the past was a good thing; it is only the future doings that are problematic) and cash in our chips content only with the results gotten so far. But how would getting people to live longer, be less prone to obesity, have smarter brains, have better eye-sight, and have various other talnents be immoral? The problem is that McKibben doesn't really ARUGE a point here; he just repeats his emotional appeal about the joys of human limitaitons as they are (you too can die at 70! Woohoo!) like it doesn't require any further argument. But in light of all of the things we COULD be better at with biotech's help, we really deserve an explanation of why it is moral to know that you can improve humans and NOT do it.
Long and short: following McKibben's title, reading this book make me say: "Enough!"

Enough ..Misinformation about Genetic Reseaarch
By Lee W Robertson
I had difficulty taking this book seriously. It seems as though the author has misinterpreted the findings of genetic research. As a result, he doesn't present the whole story. His fears are unfounded. Scientists know full well that life is not governed by genetic specifications. The psychological processes he discusses, such as music ability and intelligence, are influenced by many factors such as upbringing, life experiences, culture, cohort and education. Even in the late seventies, when I went to college, researchers accepted the premise that human traits ..especially psychological ones ..are brought about by the interaction of our genetic nature with our life experiences. Human development is a constant exchange between nature and the socializing influences of family and culture. To think that it is unilaterally determined by genetic makeup is fallacious.

From Publishers Weekly
Bertolli (Chez Panisse Cooking), former chef at Chez Panisse and now chef and co-owner of Oliveto restaurant in Oakland, Calif., persuasively encourages cooks to understand ingredient essentials and to appreciate the open-ended joy of learning and discovery. With stimulating essays on everything from gathering wild mushrooms and types of pasta flour to a 14-page section on the wonders of balsamic vinegar, Bertolli is nothing less than a pied piper for the Italian kitchen. Irresistibly, he explains how to replicate his restaurant's take on the Bloody Mary by using fresh tomatoes, how to prepare Risotto of Leeks with Balsamico and how to plan a menu by choosing dessert first, thus ensuring that it is a fitting conclusion for preceding courses. Atypically arranged in thematic sections-"Twelve Ways of Looking at a Tomato," "Bottom-Up Cooking," "The Whole Hog"-this volume is seductive, both in voice and because some of the 120-plus recipes, such as the one for Saltimbocca of Chicken, are so conversationally presented as to be narratives rather than precise lists of components and directions. When Bertolli extols the virtues of a home extruder machine for making fresh macaroni or supplies an illustrated seven-page procedure for curing prosciutto at home, he often gives the home cook a process to marvel at rather than aspire to. But even then, his enthusiasm for the result is infectious. This is an absorbing effort throughout.

Dedicated chefs recognize that every ingredient is unique and that the flavors and textures of a finished dish rely on each component's fundamental excellence. Not only is season important to harvesting the best but geography is critical, too. Paul Bertolli's Oliveto Restaurant in Oakland, California, makes use of the best of local produce of land and of sea. Cooking by Hand summarizes his approach. Not content with commercial dried pasta, Bertolli takes pages and pages of text to explain the significance of flours and how their milling affects the finished product. He elaborates how different grains such as spelt and farro produce different pastas. The sauces he offers are classics: Amatriciana, rabbit, truffles, butter and sage, and arrabbiata. His recipe for basic ragu consumes paragraphs. Bertolli serves up a definitive approach to hog butchering and sausage making, offering recipes for cotechino sausage and formulas for curing pork products. The serious Italian cook will revel in Bertolli's detailed approach. Mark Knoblauch

Farmhouse cooking raised to high art
By J. V. Lewis
There are many cookbooks out there that treat food as secondary. Their first concerns are time [Rachel Ray's focus on 30 minute recipes], waistlines [a new diet cookbok every day], money [cooking on a budget], impressing the neighbors [cooking quick, vapid, and flashy tray-foods], etc. It's remarkable, even in our food-neurotic culture, that so few cookbooks deal first and last with FOOD. Paul Bertolli's Cooking by Hand isn't just focused on food, it is passionately, single-mindedly, worshipfully, crazily in love with food and with ingredients, and with food's ability to draw friends and family together. This lusty focus generated a book like no other. In it, Bertolli efuses about tomatoes, engages in much hearty gesticulating about pork trimmings, goes on for seven pages about home prosciutto-making, writes a tear-jerking letter to his infant son about balsamic vinegar, and philosophizes at some length about terroir as a metaphor for human development. And, somehow, he pulls it off. His enthusiasm is infectious. My overwhelming sense of Paul Bertolli after reading this book [and cooking from it] is that he is totally, profoundly, madly in the thrall of good food. He makes other chefs look tepid or undercommitted. I'd probably have a hard time working for him, in the face of such over-riding passion every day, but I will be travelling 1,000 miles to his restaurant this fall because he's ignited in me a hunger that eschews caution.

I am happy to report that the recipes stand up to all the heavy breathing. The conserva of tomatoes has revolutionized my sauce-making. The illuminating instructions for sugo have caused some very quiet, almost prayerful pasta courses at my table. The Bitter Orange Cake with Compote of Blood Oranges is one of those foods that will end a meal in such a way that you will feel haunted for weeks until you get it in your mouth again.

I highly recommend this book, both as cookbook and as a gospel.

This book is so good it's been stolen from me twice!
By M. Stanley
I have this book in my library here at the restaurant and twice over the past two years it has been stolen just before the chef/thief was fired. Odd recommendation but honestly, if a book is stolen, it must be good. Out of the hundred or so food/cook related books on our shelves, this is the one that has been repeatedly pilfered. I wouldn't mind so much if I thought these guys would actually read and learn from it, which I seriously doubt since they were fired for being lazy. I remember being a college student who thought that if I owned a book it meant I knew what was in it. Wrong! Took me a while to learn I was Wrong! Now I keep Cooking By Hand locked in my office. One of these days I intend to cook my way through it. Front to back, preferably in an agriturismo in Umbria. This book makes nostalgia boil over.

Beautiful Book, Interesting Reading
By IthacaNancy
This book was inspiring to read. I don't watch much TV, so I'm not up on celebrity chefs, but the author's writing style was quite readable, beautiful, and invited one to enter the kitchen with love and respect for the ingredients, the process, oneself and the diners. The recipes are for basic foods, though I have to admit, I enjoyed reading the book, rather than making each recipe. So much of cooking at home can be repetitive and uninspired. I enjoyed the encouragement to take the whole process up a level, not by complicating gourmet cuisine, but by basic cooked-from-scratch traditional foods.

Almost identical to 1st edition.
By Impska
I used the 1st edition of this book (loose leaf) in a class where the professor insisted on the brand new 2nd edition. It is almost word-for-word identical. There doesn't seem to be a perceivable difference. You can very safely get by with the old edition. This textbook is one of the worst examples of putting out a new edition for the sake of ripping off students that I've ever encountered

Great textbook - does everything right!
By Tanner V.
First of all, I would just like to say that I used this textbook for a Psychology 101 class at the University of Washington. If you go to UW, try and get this textbook NOT AT THE UW BOOK STORE! They will try and sell you a "UW Version" which you cannot sell back since it has a different ISBN even though it's identical to this version.

This is a great textbook. The tone is involving, it's not dry at all and even though some of the metaphors seem corny, it's a nice change of pace from what I was used to. It makes the reading almost "light" in a sense, where you can just understand it when you read it once - you don't have to read the same sentence over and over trying to understand it. It presses the same five topics into your head and provides constant examples of each on almost every page (Correlation doesn't equal causation, Occam's Razor, etc). This is a nice and non-intrusive way to remind you to think scientifically while reading.

The book also has a large focus on defusing "psuedoscience", products or advertisements which rely on faulty scientific methods or thinking. As a relatively intelligent college student at decent university, I thought I would be immune to these sort of fallacies in everyday life, but I was surprisingly wrong! The text teaches you about all the sneaky way advertisers try to trick you and the techniques they use, so you can avoid them. I found myself falling into some of these traps before, but after I read the book I recognized this pseudoscience right away. They also point out plenty of scientifically-based tests to disprove "mainstream psuedoscience" like astrology, tarot cards, fortune tellers, etc etc with empirically backed studies.

The MyPsychLab feature is surprisingly useful if you can gain access to it. If you can find it for under $45, I would say look into purchasing it. It's a nice way to study over and over before tests, and includes flash cards, quizzes, pretests, tests, and more for study purposes. The only problem with this is that your professor will likely draw off different test questions then the ones provided by MyPsychlab.

In the end, I felt like I could have gained a lot of knowledge simply by reading the text. Combined with the instruction of a class, I feel way more ready to think scientifically and recognize my own scientific mistakes. It's very interesting and relevant science, and you will find yourself smiling as you realize how true these things are that you've never even thought of!

Excellent material and communication
By Albertico M.
The editors and authors did an amazing job at engaging the reader without seeming annoying or boring. I kept flipping through page after page (long chapters, but really interesting stuff) and never found myself having to "hate the authors." It has that "modern" writing style that is somewhat colloquial because they are conversing with you from beginning to end, so it makes it a lot more inclusive. Very happy my professor chose this book; got it in hardback and plan to keep it.

Mastery of OCD: An Indispensable Treatment Manual
By Dr. David Tolin
Over two decades of basic and applied research, Kozak and Foa have established themselves as two of the world's leading authorities on OCD and other anxiety disorders. This book represents the accumulation of years of scientific data and clinical experience and is a "must-have" for clinicians working with OCD patients.
The primary strength of the manual is its concise, no-nonsense description of exposure and ritual prevention (EX/RP), a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy with proven efficacy. Kozak and Foa take the reader through a session-by-session account of EX/RP. Treatment planning, descriptions of exposure exercises, and relapse prevention are all described in terms that even non-behavioral therapists can understand. In addition, common obstacles to succesful therapy are discussed, along with potential solutions.
The concise nature of the manual is also its primary limitation. Therapists seeking a detailed understanding of the biological, cognitive, and behavioral aspects of OCD will probably be disappointed. Similarly, alternative treatment strategies such as pharmacotherapy and cognitive therapy are not described in much detail. However, if you are seeking a "bible" of EX/RP, presented clearly and concisely, this book will certainly be a vital resource.

Open Sky: Sonny Rollins and His World of Improvisation, by Eric Nisenson

Sonny Rollins is arguably the most influential tenor saxophonist that jazz has produced. He began his musical career at the tender age of eleven, and within five short years he was playing with the legendary Thelonius Monk. In the late forties (before his twenty-first birthday), Rollins was in full swing, recording with jazz luminaries such as Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, Max Roach, Art Blakey, Miles Davis, and Fats Navarro. He was hailed as the best jazz tenor saxophonist alive during the years 1955 to 1959, when he was credited with pioneering the use of 3/4-time in bop music.Today, forty years later, Rollins's onstage appearances are eagerly anticipated events, where his compelling sound reaches a whole new generation of listeners. Renowned jazz writer Eric Nisenson has penned a long-overdue look at one of jazz music's brightest and most enduring stars.

From Publishers Weekly
Less a biography than an effusive discography, this study of the legendary saxophonist Sonny Rollins lacks the innovative playfulness that characterizes the jazz tenor's own work. Nisenson ('Round About Midnight) sets out to document "the development of a great jazzman's sensibility and musical conception, and how his life has meshed with his art." To that end, he traces Rollins's career from his stints as Miles Davis's sideman in the early 1950s and his ascension to accomplished bandleader by the '60s through his less influential past three decades. The lengthy quotations from Rollins himself, who riffs on such topics as his escape from heroin and his desire to remain humble in the face of success, show him to be a strikingly introspective figure, impeccably self-aware and critical of himself as a human being. It's unfortunate that Nisenson's treatment of Rollins's relationships to social and political issues is cut short in two important instances: Rollins's 1960 anti-racism album, The Freedom Suite, and his frustration with the bottom-line-obsessed world of major record labels, which led him to retreat from the jazz scene for six years starting in 1966. Instead, the author concentrates on Rollins's theory of improvisation as a highly intuitive expression of emotion and self; his reactions to the musician's various albums are accordingly subjective, evocative and full of metaphors. Yet the extravagant praise Nisenson heaps on Rollins grows monotonous, muddling together the different albums. Overall, there's very little hard information or insight to be gleaned from this cloying book. (Mar.)

From Library Journal
Rollins was born in Harlem in 1930 when the Harlem Renaissance was at its peak. His family was caught up in the atmosphere that produced not only great culture but also a social consciousness that led to the Back to Africa movement. By the time Rollins graduated from high school, he was a professional musician playing with the likes of Thelonious Monk and fronting his own trio. Heroin addiction made him into a pariah and landed him in jail for armed robbery, but through music he overcame it. Nisenson (Blue: The Murder of Jazz) clearly knows his territory. Extensive interviews with Rollins provide insight and detail into his evolution as a musician of passion, integrity, and invention. While Nisenson wears his admiration for Rollins on his sleeve, he has written a compelling history of one of the unsung jazz giants; recommended for all jazz collections.

From Booklist
One of the architects of modern jazz, tenor saxophonist Rollins absorbed the harmonic and rhythmic advances of be-bop and merged them with melodic exploration, as Ornette Coleman and other '50s "new thing" practitioners were doing, while bringing the music back in line with popular taste, as the parallel development of hard bop did. And he didn't stop there, essaying some "out" playing in the '60s and fusion in the '70s. With the help of an orchestral composer, he even fulfilled a commission for saxophone and orchestra. Moreover, due to turn 70 later this year, he is still capable of spinning out half-hour and longer solos filled with invention, which is why Nisenson wanted to write him up. Nisenson enjoyed Rollins' full participation, and the book consists of almost as much Rollins as Nisenson. It does not include candid personal details, even about Rollins' early drug addiction. It does include the kind of commentary that makes you itch to hear Sonny Rollins play. Ray Olson

I was very disappointed with this book.
By Jason E. Mingledorff
Eric Nisenson claims that this is not a definitive biography of Sonny Rollins. I would have to agree. Not only does this book tell us hardly anything about Sonny's personal life (his inpirations, his heartbreaks, his relationships with other jazz musicians), it has neither a discography nor an index. It's list of sources is only a page and a half, half of which seem to be previous books by Nisenson. After an inspired first chapter, Nisenson just seems to list through Sonny's albums and notable achievements, using generous quotes from Sonny describing events that were just described by the author himself. There were some good discriptions of some of the albums and some of Sonny's better solos, but most of it reads like a textbook. I would suggest that someone wait for either Sonny's autobiography (for which he's obviously saved a lot of info) or a "definitive" biography.

A Sorry Fanzie ramble...Indeed.
By Boils
Eric Nisenson is a fanzie not a writer. His attempt at this Rollins book fails on every level. At the end we know no more of Rollins than we do at the beginning. When Nisenson begins rambling he goes off cliffs. Was there no editor to put this book back on track. Nisenson will always use ten words when one would do nicely. I picked this book up with great expectations. The only thing 'great' that happened was my disappointment. I wondered while reading the book of the author had ever even heard Rollins play. Something was that amiss.

TThe endless unsubstanntiated praise of Rollins is someghing to behold. 'Fanzie' doesn't do justice to the egoless hero worshipping by the author. Maybe he has no ego. I'd wait for a definitive book on Rollins rather than buy this. Really I'd nominate it as the worst jazz book of the decade.

From a Saxophonist's Perspective...
By Charles Pratt III
this book gives you a peek into the way Sonny Rollins thinks as a person and musician. This is not your typical biography and I don't believe the Author intended it to be. If you really want to know if this book is for you, take a moment and read the Foreword written by Sonny Rollins himself!(Check out the "Look Inside" link.) Rollins even felt uncomfortable writing the Foreword in a book about his own life and mentions just that.

More importantly, Sonny Rollins wrote that:

"Eric has done an excellent job of depicting my life and my evolution as a musician, and the book has many insights (although I do not necessarily agree with all of his opinions. I have a special appreciation for his understanding of how cultural and social issues have shaped my life, both as a man and an artist."

I'm a Saxophonist who thoroughly enjoyed this book! The Author has opinions just like the rest of us, but this does not detract from gaining insight into the creative process and decisions Sonny Rollins made during critical junctures in his life. I guess your reaction to this book depends a lot on your point of view. From a budding musician's perspective, I believe this book hits the mark.

But to understand the intent of this book, don't listen to me, the Sonny Rollins quote above says it all!

Review
"To put it short, this is THE BOOK, that I would like to use in Inorganic Chemistry. The book contains all the information needed. Furthermore, it is well and logically presented. The problems related with each chapter are good; and the suggestions for further reading are highly relevant." Markku Sundberg, Helsinki University, Finland "I've had one of my students take a look at the book and I virtually had to tear it from his hands in order to get it back!" Professor Nikolaus Korber, University of Regensburg, Germany "Housecroft--Sharpe has been the far most superior contemporary inorganic chemistry textbook there is. It was the case of the 1st edition and it remains so for the 2nd edition. The book is also a very good comprehensive text for chemists in general, PhD students and researchers. Clearly, students may prefer the more colorful 2nd edition, and so will their teachers for pedagogical reasons." Pavel Karen, Oslo University, Norway "My tutorial group students... thought that the addition of colour was a major improvement relative to the 1st edition. I thought that the section on Group Theory and symmetry is much better handled in the 2nd edition." Mary Mahon, Bath University, UK "Undoubtedly, the new colour format makes the book seem more attractive to the reader; I noted that the descriptive chemistry has been updated also. It is pleasing that the authors continue to provide a broad coverage of chemistry throughout the Periodic Table while maintaining a reasonable size of book. One of the most important features (and one that recommended the book to us as a text) is that topics are presented in a straightforward manner, making them accessible to the less able students." Professor John Winfield, Glasgow University, UK

Who is this book for?
By Billy Wayne Mccann
I find this book frustrating.

The presentation is very poor. Topics are broached willy-nilly with paltry discussion. Sometimes it's just plain laughable. For example, Box 1.3, discussing the particle in the box: "There is one further restriction that we shall simply state: the boundary condition for the particle in the box is that [the wavefunction] must be zero when x=0 and x=a." Instead of a simple statement of this and expecting the student to take it on authority, why not give the *reason* for these boundary conditions, which can be summarized in a single sentence, i.e. 'the wavefunction must be continuous with the region outside the box, which is also zero'? Another example from the first chapter: the section "Ground state electronic configurations: experimental data". After I read this section I couldn't help but think to myself "where's the experimental data? what was the point of this section?"

Which leads to my second criticism: who is this book for? It's too advanced for undergraduates and not advanced enough for graduates. This book attempts to be all-things-to-all-people, in my opinion, which makes it good for no one. It's as though the authors took an undergraduate text and added a few more bits here and there, sporadically, without rhyme or reason. This may or may not be the reason that this book weighs SIX pounds. The authors tried to shoe-horn too much into this book.

Finally, the aesthetics of the book are atrocious. The color scheme used is distracting and hard on the eyes. Dark primary colors and light pastels on the same page?!? On some pages you can count up to six different colors used for separate things. I feel like my eyes are being pulled every direction and find it difficult to concentrate on the text.

However, I do feel like this book may be a good review book. Do you need to freshen up on a wide variety of inorganic chemistry topics without going too much into detail on every topic? This text may indeed suite that purpose very well.

But, being a grad student and having been assigned this book, I have found that in reading it I'm viewing material that is either far too basic and general and therefore a waste of my time or I'm given insufficient details for true understanding when it comes to advanced material. This is why I find this text frustrating and have given it two stars. If it weren't for the encyclopedic nature of the text, it would have received only one star.

3.5 stars, really
By ScienceGirl
When I first took inorganic as an undergrad, I didn't think that this book was clear enough. As a stand-alone text, it was not adequate. However, once I paired it with Shriver and Atkins, many of the holes were filled in. (Interestingly, Shriver/Atkins alone wasn't adequate either). They needed to be paired- particularly when studying M-O diagrams and lattices etc. I would also recommend Metal-Ligand Bonding by Janes and Moore. This combination was my elixir...my inorganic triumvirate. Hope this helps.

Very useful textbook!
By Arturo Ruiz
I knew this book will take most of my time out of my other courses I am taking. The book is very compact and huge, which is why I knew it will be a very complicated textbook that my professor chose. Once I began my assignment, the chapters were neatly organized and easy to comprehend. I thought it will take me numerous of times to understand the sections of the chapter, but at the end of each section are quick worked-out problems and practice questions to review at the end of each section. I was very satisfied with the review portion of the textbook. If I had any questions I used the section highlighted terms and Google or looked up on YouTube. The information online and videos closely related to the textbook material and I was able to get back on track. I will definitely recommend this textbook as a reference or if a professor is taking any recommendations. This will help a lot in the long run.
