Stop building other people's robots, start doing robotics

Until we came across this book my six year old and I had been following the typical routine of following a book or internet instructions adding a few creative modifications here and there at the end. Building this way does give you experience and teaches you tricks and principles but it can also make robotics seem more daunting than it should be because you can't help but be awed and intimidated by the intricate designs of people who are expert builders. Your six year old is not going to try to modify that complicated steering mechanism which took four pages of book instructions to explain.
In contrast most of the things built in Isogawa's book are explained in just one or two picture frames. Everything is a mechanism, beautifully and simply presented to invite you to want to understand the ideas at work and experiment and tinker yourself. My son started flipping through the almost entirely visual book on his own and was immediately drawn in. The first thing he built were a few of the designs for changing motor rotations into 'lifting' motions. Before very long it felt like both of us had crossed a threshold into a new world with endless new possibilities, learning and exploration ahead.
It is said that the Japanese are known as master craftsmen and for the beautiful functional simplicity of their designs. This book proves it so.

Grabbers, Gears and Gadgets

Pretty cool book. Minimal text, great pictures. Perfect for the budding engineer. If you've got the programing, but need guidance on Lego mechanics, this book is for you.
Good pictorial representations of gear ratio's, and Lego geometry. Lots of great mechanisms to inspire your creativity. No text though, so you need to be comfortable with deciphering ideas from pictures.
It is not focused on the programming side of Lego Mindstorms, but the mechanism side. It provides many examples of the mechanical subassemblies that are possible with the Lego Mindstorms kit.
The EV3 idea book gives you mechanical building blocks, and some important mechanical principals that enable your robotic ideas to successfully come to life.

I would recommend this to any mindstormer, Beginner to expert. It has almost no words, which is a unique way of showing how to build a model/mechanism.

Common sense for your dollars and cents.

Although Dave Ramsey is becoming more widely known around the nation, I can still mention his name here in Chicago and get a "Who's that?" response. I first found out about Dave while living in Kentucky through a co-worker. This discovery turned my life around.

Two years ago, my husband and I were a little over $36,000 in debt including credit cards, cars, and student loans. Today, we are completely debt-free, saving an emergency fund like Ramsey strongly advocates in the book, and we will be able to purchase a home on a 15-year fixed rate mortgage (also something he advocates in the book).

The philosophy is incredibly simple, and a few other reviewers have already listed his "baby steps," so I won't rehash that again. "Baby steps" actually came from the Bill Murray flick "What About Bob?", in case you're wondering. Not only are the steps easy to follow, but you'll want to channel Homer Simpson and have a "Doh!" moment when you read it. On his widely syndicated talk radio show, Ramsey uses the opening line, "Teaching you the same advice your grandmother would, only we keep our teeth in." That line is in deference to the fact that he realizes he is teaching people common sense money management.

If you're in love with your FICO score or looking for a financial expert to help you improve your credit, Ramsey's book is the wrong one for you. Be forewarned that he cares NOTHING about a credit score. The only debt that he "allows" you to keep is a mortgage, and he's not crazy about that. If you're looking for a way to get out of debt, stay out of debt, and learn to make the most of your hard-earned wages (possibly become a millionaire in the process), then you need to read this book. It may change your life; it changed mine.

Relevant for anyone ready to clean up their debt mess

A no nonsense look at how to manage finances. Its eye opening...maybe a little too much in some cases. If you listen to Dave on the radio then this book will seem low key. The steps are easy to follow. In fact they are almost too easy its tempting to over complicate them. I like the personal stories of families who made the commitment to a debt free life (now or eventually!)

If your ready to clean up "the mess" then this is a perfect starting place. I've read a number of finance guides as we work to clean up our debt and I wished I had discovered this years ago. I can also see that this is a book I'll come back to as I progress through the baby steps. For example, when I'm ready to really start investing in retirement. Before I read this book, retirement seemed like a dream. But now, with Ramsey's plan, I can see how this too will be in our future.

A lot of bad advice for many people

I bought Ramsey's book because he has so many raving fans (my daughter among them), and the loyalty they express is often literally evangelical in nature. Offering any criticism of Dave Ramsey's advice can draw fusillades of righteous indignation. Any negative comments about Dave Ramsey, Financial Peace University or any of the many products he sells may be answered by, "You obviously love debt," and "why are you so against living by Biblical principles?"

As a financial professional, I can legitimately claim to be an expert in matters of debt and credit. So I bought his book so I could see just what it was about Dave Ramsey would cause these extreme reactions. After reading it carefully, I have come to some conclusions.

First, I must acknowledge that there is a lot to like about Dave Ramsey. His basic teaching can be boiled down to this:

1. Don't buy stuff on credit that you can't afford
2. Set aside money for emergencies and the future
3. If you are in trouble with debt, stop incurring it (we could also state it as, "When you're deep in a hole, stop digging.")
4. Make a plan to retire your debt systematically

He offers a step-by-step method for getting out of debt and onto a better financial footing. He teaches that you should pay attention to your finances and work from a written budget.

These are all good things.

My first concern is that Mr. Ramsey teaches that All Debt Is Evil (with the possible exception of a 15 year mortgage). Others here have mentioned his assertion that "responsible use of a credit card is not possible." His audience is urged not only to pay off their debt (a Good Thing), but to cut up the cards and close the accounts.

As a mortgage lender, I can attest that this will destroy an individual's credit score and make securing a mortgage very difficult and expensive. Mr. Ramsey's simplistic answer to getting a mortgage without a credit score (or, more accurately, without any active accounts) is to "find a lender who does manual underwriting." The simple fact is that ALL mortgages are manually underwritten. It is possible to get a loan using "alternative credit" (rent receipts, cell phone bills, utilities, etc.), but these loans are, without exception, far more expensive than conventional loans. At a minimum, a borrower without any open accounts will have to resort to a government-insured FHA loan, which carries an up-front mortgage insurance premium of 2.25% of the loan amount, plus .55% additional insurance, paid monthly.

There are many instances of bad, even dangerous advice from Mr. Ramsey, often couched in terms similar to those found in 12-Step programs, expressed in his avuncular, folksy style. He makes liberal use of logical fallacy and outright false statements to advance his points.

I believe Dave Ramsey's appeal (and the vehicle that is earning him a reported $40 million annually) is to those who are desperately in debt, primarily because of their own bad habits. They are looking for any lifeline, and he offers them not only a method, but also encouragement to stick with their plan.

But for people who are NOT in dire straits, simply looking for a way to improve their financial lives, there are far better places to seek guidance than Dave Ramsey's simplistic, one-size-fits-all advice. Borrow one of his books or check them out at the library, read them critically and decide for yoursef whether my comments have any merit.

Great Collection

This magnificent compilation has three Plato writings: "Apology," "Crito," and "Phaedo." Though apparently early works and not as complex or philosophically influential as later ones, they are immensely important in portraying Socrates' trial and death. They are our clearest picture of the historical Socrates and would be invaluable for this alone. Indeed, I have read hundreds - perhaps thousands - of books, and this is one of my ten or so favorites, mostly because of how moving the depiction of the great man's last days is. The story of Socrates' Apology and last moments is part of world literature's very fabric, an immortal part of Western cultural heritage. Anyone who wants to learn about Socrates should start here. However, the works have great value even aside from this; a few have indeed questioned their historical veracity. This does not affect their philosophical, literary, and political worth, which is of the highest, making the book doubly essential.

"Apology" is Plato's least philosophical and most unrepresentative work but arguably his most important and is among many readers' favorites, including mine. The book's title is misleading in that this is prose rather than dialogue; it purports to be Socrates' self-defense at his trial. It is historically priceless if so, as it gives his last public statements and some background about his life and the lead up to the trial. Even if not, it is of immense worth as a passionate, sound defense of individualism and free speech; its timeless evocation of these all-important concepts is forever associated with Socrates and the main reason he has been immortalized. The work also piercingly examines the often vast law/conscience gap and is thus an early higher law document. Finally, it is a sort of mini-dialogue in itself touching on and in several ways tying up classic Socrates/Plato themes like the nature of piety and goodness, responsibility toward the gods and the state, interpersonal relations, and life vs. death issues. It sums up Socrates and perhaps Plato better than any other work.

"Crito" is a possibly partly historical account of the title character visiting Socrates in jail to inform him that he is able to escape via bribe; Socrates famously says that he accepts his sentence and argues down contrary pleas. This gives incredible potential insight into Socrates, in many ways telling us more about his character and thought than a full biography ever could. Again, though, it transcends this philosophically and otherwise and is particularly relevant politically. It also examines the law/conscience gap and gives further background on Socrates but is notable above all as a very early example of the social contract theory of government. This is an astonishing example of how advanced Plato was, as the theory is generally considered to have been founded by Thomas Hobbes nearly a millennium later. Even more amazingly, it is put forth more clearly and persuasively here than perhaps anywhere else, making the dialogue essential for anyone interested in political theory.

"Phaedo" ostensibly details Socrates' last moments, including his last look at his wife and child, his last dialogue, his last words to friends, and his actual death. A large part of Socrates' image comes from this, and its potential historical value is inconceivable, though its historicity can easily be doubted since the work itself strongly suggests that Plato was not there. Even so, it is likely accurate in regard to the things that really matter and certainly a fine account of how it very well could have been. It is extremely moving; shot through with pathos, it is one of the most affecting things I have ever read. One can surely not read it without being overcome by emotion; I can hardly even think of it without misty eyes. Anyone who respects and admires this central Western civilization figure will be profoundly touched; his famous last words seem comic out of context but are very much otherwise here, telling us much about Socrates and moving us yet further. This would be one of the greatest works of all-time if it had no other aspect, but it is also a fine dialogue appropriately dealing mostly with death. Plato examines perennial questions like the soul's immortality and metempsychosis very thoroughly and thought-provokingly, and the conclusion - unsurprisingly, given the circumstances - has uncharacteristic certainty. It may not convince our cynical, empiricist, science-loving, twentieth century-surviving age, but the argument is certainly well-made and in many ways admirable. The dialogue touches on other important subjects also and is generally seen as the culmination of Plato's early, Socrates-centered thought.

It is important to realize that these four works were not originally published together, but the trial and death connection means they are often collected. There are many such editions, but this is among the least expensive and one of the most widely available, making it ideal for most. That said, some editions - e.g., Dover's Trial and Death of Socrates, which is even cheaper - also have "Euthyphro." The ever-important translation issue must also be kept in mind. It goes without saying that anyone who cares about intellectual issues, especially applied ones, must know Plato, as should anyone who wants to be even basically well-read. However, this is far easier said than done for most; he is so different from what now passes for literature, to say nothing of pop culture, that he is virtually inaccessible to general readers. Yet the importance of persevering cannot be overemphasized; the payoff is well worth the effort. As nearly always in such cases, reading him becomes far easier after the initial difficulty; no attentive reader will ever think Plato easy reading, but he is utterly absorbing once we get used to his style. He has a near-poetic beauty that all agree has never even been remotely approached in philosophy, and such mesmerizing prose is rare in any genre. His dialogues are an incredible form at once intellectually and aesthetically pleasing - an inspired combination that has perhaps never been bettered; many have appropriated it, but none have matched it. All this means that picking the right translation is probably more important with Plato than any other writer. For the average reader, the more recent, the better is generally true, though older translations like W. H. D. Rouse's and Benjamin Jowett's are still very accessible. The important thing is to read Plato in some form, and those who happen on a translation that does not work for them should keep trying until their mind opens in a truly new way - and once done, it will never close again.

All told, though this edition is not the best for all, anyone wanting an inexpensive Plato/Socrates primer could hardly do better.

May help student understand how to narrow answer choices, at least somewhat. Needs more practice tests.

I am on my second kid taking these tests and many of these books have cycled through my house.

First of all, the “money back” guarantee for a higher score is nonsense. First of all, if you take a test a second time you tend to do better (familiarity with the test). Even random fluctuations may have you end up with a “higher “ (but not significantly higher) score. And should your score not increase, you only have 90 days to get a refund, and you have to explain why you did not find it helpful. Since that gives you less than 3 months to study, take the test, get the results and write an explanation and mail it, I doubt they have to make good on many of these guarantees. In fact, I find the guarantee disingenuous (there is an SAT word!) and irritating. It reminds me of the rebate forms designed to be so difficult to complete that most people do not bother.

I got this book because my kid just took the new PSAT. She did very well but neither she nor I could figure why she missed some of the questions on the reading section. The explanations offered by College Board did not clear up our confusion. I do not claim to be a guru in English, so I hoped that this book would help to clarify some of the answer choices.

I would say the explanations in this book were somewhat helpful, more in understanding how the writers of the PSAT think, rather than the actual concepts in English. As far as I am concerned, some of the answers are still matters of opinion. As my kid said “well, maybe this will help me figure out what they want” so maybe that will help.

I did like the short section outlining the types of questions on the PSAT as command of evidence, vocab in context, global questions, detail questions and rhetoric questions. Knowing that the types of questions fall into these categories can be useful. Also, the small amount of info on essay writing may or may not be useful (do not know since the PSAT did not have an essay section).

It is also helpful to take practice tests, but there are not that many questions in this book (it is pretty thin for a test review book at 203 pages) and there is only one practice exam. In some Kaplan books you can get more practice exams online, not for this one. I would like to see at least three full length practice tests, so the student can take one, study, note any improvement, take another, study again and take a final version. Then again, it is not very expensive. I highly suggest you get the paper version if you decide to buy, rather than the Kindle version. You want to be able to write in it.

I will note that my kid does very well on these sort of exams already, I think the book might be more useful for a kid scoring in the middle of the PSAT range.

A good place to start.

Felt like this is a review book, not your typical Kaplan book. Use this as a place to start, and then find other workbooks. Includes an introduction, and how to prepare for the test. Discusses the Reading Test and gives you several practice tests. Then the Writing and Language test, which also includes practice tests. Then 20 pages on the Essay Test. I like the testing myths, I always think that's a great idea. I also like the test reviews.

SAT prep

Kaplan makes some great study aids. Their New SAT guide is also terrific. It's smaller than the usual Kaplan SAT books because it focuses on Evidence-Based Reading, Writing, and Essays for the exam. I think this is ideal for someone who may have a good handle on most of the test, but wants some extra practice for this portion.

The book has four sections - The Reading Test, The Writing & Language Test, The Essay Test, and Practice Test. Each section has a lot of practice and sample questions followed by answers and explanations and the practice test is in test format complete with an answer sheet. Before these sections though, the book has some information about how to get the most out of it, what to expect on test day, and some general test-taking strategies and common myths. The back of the book has an Essay Test Rubric and several blank pages for notes.

I've been happy with Kaplan products to help me study over the years. I think this is a good one to help prepare for the SAT's reading and writing portions.
