easy and convenient way to talk your way through Japan

easy and convenient way to talk your way through Japan. Had seen an older print and loved it but this newer print doesn't have as much "sound like a local" phrasing which is what I liked most about the earlier print. None the less, it a great little book to have on you for your time in japan.
- format note - fingering your way through the book to find what you need takes a little practice but once you dog ear your go to phrases you'll be good to go.

A great basic resource for tourists

This book was definitely put together to help travelers learn some of the basics, and is not meant to help teach Japanese fully. That said, it does a great job with basics phrases.

I bought this book just before traveling to Japan for the first time, and found it helpful for a number of reasons. It covers just about every interaction a tourist might have while in Japan, so I found myself turning to it for help with basic communications about food and buying things from stores. On top of that it offers some information about Japan and the culture there, as well as some basic info about getting around that isn't language-related.

This book also gives a very high-level introduction to some of the Japanese characters, which I found interesting but not particularly helpful. The most advanced I got with Japanese characters while there was memorizing what the names of things or places looked like and trying to match them on sake bottles or signs.

A Must Buy

This book was our lifeline in Japan. Not that you can't survive without it, as all of the Japanese people we met went out of their way to help us. And many speak at least a little English. But for those times when we landed in a restaurant without photos and our waiters spoke 0 English, this book made ordering a fun challenge and a successful one. My 9 year old was in charge of the phrase book for the entire trip and it was easy enough for her to use and get some experience speaking Japanese (just a word at a time, but a start). What's great is that if you are searching for a place or item or food item, and a helpful Japanese soul offers to assist you, you can also point to the Japanese word (in Japanese characters) in the book and try the phonetic pronunciation out as well. It's so small, the book fit in my kid's tiny little backpack and would do also in my purse. We used this way more often than google translate as you clearly don't need to be in a wifi zone for this little gem to work its magic.

Pros and Cons

Pros:
1. very readable outline format.
2. covers a lot of pediatric issues and diseases.
3. more integrated mini-cases were added to this edition.
4. silly looking sketches inside the book were replaced with more professional drawings, and the cover looks prettier now with the picture of smiling freckly girl on it. :)

Cons:
1. sometimes too simplistic and superficial. hematology is especially weak - Diamond-Blackfan Anemia is mentioned only as a differential diagnosis for Transient Erythroblastopenia of Childhood, and Fanconi's Anemia - only as something which should be distinguished from Fanconi Syndrome. treatment issues need much more detailed discussions - for example, no mention that treatment for tuberculosis follows 2 months + 4 months guideline (though its more 'advanced' sibling 'First Aid for the Pediatric Boards', 1st ed., doesn't provide any info about tuberculosis at all, except for PPD interpretation).
2. some typos or factual errors:
on page 450 says that stage 4 of Neuroblastoma is 'self-limited with good prognosis'. that's wrong - stage 4 is the most advanced and incurable stage. it's stage 4S which is 'self-limited with good prognosis'. so, they somehow managed to lose this important 'S' between previous and current editions.
on page 559 under the heading 'Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder' gives definitions for obsessions and compulsions, and then goes on to describe diagnosis, signs and symptoms, and treatment for Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder, never mentioning the name 'Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder' itself. so, you're getting a nice mix of these classically confused psychiatric disorders.
3. there are some redundant repetitions - for example, Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy is covered twice, in different chapters; the same about Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip.
4. needs more illustrations.

Great Comprehensive Review

I really liked this book. I highly recommend it! I used it to study for my medical school rotation COMAT/shelf exam, and I feel it really helped me get a good score. The book is concise but covers a broad range of topics and disease states. It gives key symptoms or features of each disease state, lab results, and treatments. It lists important test clues in the columns.

The best feature of this book is that the disease states that you learn about are not just realevent to pediatrics but to adults as well. It's really like an overall review of everything you studied for Step 1 boards in a condensed version. I used the notes that I took from this book to study for my Step 2 boards for not only the pediatrics section but for all the various body systems as well. Diseases discussed in this book affect the pediatric population, but they also affect adults. I felt this book was a great comprehensive review for boards (COMLEX).

ok i guess

I bought this book for the pediatric shelf exam, but once I opened it and started studying it, it seemed like just too much information that was clinically relevant but not good for the shelf exam. This book would be great to read before your pediatric rotation, especially if you are thinking about going into pediatrics and really want to impress the right people. There is very good information in the beginning about full patient history and physical that is clinically important. However, I don't think it would be helpful for the shelf exam.

Printable questionnaire's?

Having bought the book and just started reading it, it seems to be well written and clear, the issue that I have encountered is that there are many questionnaires in the book and obviously on the kindle edition there is no way of marking one's responses. I am not sure if there is a companion website where one could download the questionnaire portions, print them out and mark them up as this would really increase the utility of the book since this is positioned as a practical guide and the participation of the reader is crucial to understanding the concepts in 'Night School'.

If such a site or resource exists would be great to have a link to that on the purchase page or in the item description, as otherwise the usefulness of the book is diminished greatly!

The Book's a WOW!

I'm a retired psychologist so the subject of sleeping and dreaming has been of interest to me throughout both my career and my personal life. This book is the best organized and written one on the subject I've ever come across. The author has taken a great deal of in-depth research that could have been dry and overwhelming, but he has organized it and presented clearly and easy to read and understand. As is his style, tucked in here and there are delightful touches of humor that add to the pleasure of reading it. In addition, this book is one that a person having difficulty with sleep could benefit from as it includes steps a reader can take to improve sleep, concentration and learning. I think Professor Wiseman is a unique contributor to our understanding of human existence. This book on sleep fits right in with his other winners such as Quirkology, 59 Seconds and The Luck Factor all of which are available on Amazon.

I came across this book by accident, on youtube.
But I am happy I did!

I love any neuroscience type book and you can't more into brains than sleep.

But it is an easy read and full of information.
I appreciate it because I work graveyards and need every bit of info.

This book is intended as an introduction to the science of microlithography for those new to the subject, and it covers advanced topics useful to experienced lithographers who seek information outside their own areas of expertise. Numerous references to the literature in optical lithograpy will guide both novice and experienced lithographers who want greater detail in specific areas.

A number of discussions--such as thin-resist modeling, metrics for imaging, thin-film optics, and the modeling of focus effects--first appeared in Advanced Micro Design internal reports. Eventually, parts of these reports were published elsewhere. Their tutorial nature is not coincidental, as they were analyses that I used to develop my own understanding of lithography. Complex situations often are best comprehended through simple models that describe the relevant physics, with remaining effects considered as perturbations. This is the approach I used in learning lithography and it is the method used here.

Students in my classes on lithography science will recognize many of the figures and equations. Several also appear in the first chapter of the SPIE Handbook on Microlithography, Micromachining, and Microfabrication, Volume I: Microlithography, which I coauthored with Bill Arnold of ASM Lithography. Other topics have been added or significantly expanded, especially those concerning light sources, photomasks, and next-generation lithography. The chapter on photoresists is approached from the perspective of the practicing lithographer, rather than the resist chemist. Some knowledge of resist chemistry is essential for using resists properly, but the emphasis here is on operational considerations.

About the Author
Dr. Harry J. Levinson has worked in microlithography for nearly two decades, at companies such as IBM, Sierra Semiconductor, and Advanced Micro Devices. He has published many articles on lithography science, from thin film optical effects and metrics for imaging to overlay and process control. He teaches courses in lithography science, process control, and total quality management.

Review of "Principles of Lithography," 2nd edition by Harry J. Levinson.

This is an excellent book for engineers, whether in photolithography or not, to acquire an overview and understanding of modern deep sub-micron photolithography and the challenges microlithographers face. It is well written and easy to read. Levinson takes you through the entire process of lithography step by step with both the mathematics involved, but also, an intuitive explanation of what the technical issues involved are. The drawings done for the figures are done well and easily understood and printed with clarity. As for photos used for figures in the book, they are also well done, and of the proper brightness and contrast so that they are easy to view and comprehensible. They are not like some books, where you wonder if the illustration was a fifth generation photocopy or just incomprehensible.

Levinson also includes a chapter on metrology. If you are producing a microlithographic pattern you need to be able to measure it, and critical dimensions in lithography are not dues ex machina.

The book has problem exercises at the end of each chapter to allow the reader to test themselves on what they have learned. I also recommend working out many of the equations as an exercise.

Levinson also doesn't neglect the historical development of the practice of lithography. There is an explanation on why early lithography tended to have high overexposure and then went to 1:1 imaging and issues driving this. Also, there is a good chapter on the claims in the 1980s that optical lithography would not get past 1 micron resolution, and why this subsequently didn't prove to be true. Levinson bravely also writes up a section on the future limits of lithography and in a few years we will see if he was right. Regardless whether he will turn out to be right or not, it is an excellent explanation of the challenges involved. I think that there is an under appreciation that of the tremendous obstacles overcome in the advancement of microlithography. It isn't an automatic step down, and we do face the prospect that maybe 65 nm or 45 nm or 32 nm or 22nm will be the end.

Next generation lithography is not neglected either and Levinson reviews the technologies and challenges for each of them.

The book is a worthy successor to David Elliot's handbook on photolithography. (Perhaps some of you will regard that as paleolithography.) It is not expensive and should be on your book shelf.

I wrote a supplementary paper in WORD for this book. I work out some of the equations in more detail than the text making it easier to understand. If you knew in your heart of hearts that the Roman Catholic Church has always been the most ignorant and corrupt organization on earth, this book pretty much confirms that. The book documents over five hundred years of kidnapping, murder, kick backs, on and on. In recent memory, the infamous Ratline, transporting Nazi and Croatian war criminals to South America, still smarts. Also, the buying off of politicians in Poland, leading to financial disasters, while the Church bleeds its parishioners, is the true character of a recent Pope, considered for sainthood?

sub-society and research concerns

Truly not a bad historical reference book of the Church. Providing insight into each important conclave and the divisions therein were, for me, interesting. Also in dealing with the papal states, their maintenance and eventual loss, was somewhat informative. The dealings of various European rulers and leaders with the Church added to my knowledge some new information.

My concern, and I'll admit it's a small one, deals with the fact gathering of groups like the Octogonus Circle, the Society of the Thirteen and others. What an ominous name - Octogonus Circle. We are so intrigued today with anything secret and hidden and as readers we enjoy conspiracies and spy-like games. Why is it that a group such as one of these, that has existed for nearly 500 years is basically non-existent on the Internet? On Amazon, The Octogonus Circle, by Peter Harris is only offered in Spanish and appears to be the only book like it anywhere. This book is not even referenced in Mr Frattini's bibliography! Moreover, there is nothing on the Internet aside these two books referencing the Circle. The same exists with the Society of the Thirteen, minus one book or at least the one that I could find.

I do ask where he gathered the information on these groups.

While I concede that what happens within governments is on most levels unknown to us. We truly have no clue, so I did find this book interesting. But I must wonder about certain aspects of this book, even though the bibliography is well listed - minus one aspect...

Eye Opening

I was amazed at the level of detail. It's heavily documented, which is refreshing in an alternative medicine book. In fact, if what Dr. Douglass says is true (and I'm pretty confident it is), then the mainstream medical establishment has a lot of explaining to do about why they have rejected and ignored light-based therapies that have produced excellent, well-documented clinical or double-blind results over the course of a century.
He also does an excellent job in not overselling his claims. He pulls no punches about when and where the therapy failed to work. When it does work, he also doesn't hold back in his enthusiasm. Some might be put off by this last fact, but I think his presentation is well-balanced, overall.
My only criticism is that, while most documentation is excellent, I wish the author had paid a bit more attention to completing all of his references. I have a second edition copy, which includes a reference on page 232 to something called, _AIDS - The End of Civilization_, Chapter 6. Unfortunately, there are no other descriptions of that book that I could find, such as who wrote or published it. I learned later that it was another book by the same author, but that fact should have been included in the reference.)
Another example of an inaccurate reference is on page 236, where he mentions a blue light therapy performed on a little girl in Chapter 14. Unfortunately, Chapter 14 is about a doctor with AIDS and how he has dealt with this personal crisis. It has no reference to either blue light therapy or the little girl.
Such mistakes aside, the overall value of the book is tremendous. I recommend it heartily to anyone whose mind isn't closed like a steel trap.
I also recommend another book by the author called Hydrogen Peroxide, Medical Miracle. The two books should really be considered companions of each other.

Factual history and indications of this excellent therapy

Dr. Douglass is a leading American expert on Photoluminescence (aka Blood Irradiation, Biophotonic Therapy, etc.). In this book he provides a great deal of very useful original source material from the early American clinical trials of this formidable therapy. He has travelled to Russia to consult with physicians there and includes some material from recent Russian sources as well. The book is written in an engaging style, with many insights into topics related to this therapeutic use of the chemiluminescent property of human blood cells. The abundant evidence from this book makes it clear that mainstream medicine has allowed an excellent therapy to slip through the cracks. Into the Light

DR. Campbell's book "into the Light" is fantabulous. On a scale of 1 to 5, it is a 20. It is a must read if you believe in alternative medicine. It is sad that we can't get the FDA to approve of this life-saving treatment. This treatment saved my mother's life when conventional medicine put her in the hospital 4 times within one month.

In addition, this treatment saved my wife's life when she came down with Valley Fever. It also saved me from having heart surgery for an irregular heart beat. I am so grateful that I will not need that expensive and possibly fatal surgery. Anyone that says the treatments that Dr. Campbell recommends do not work has not really done any research on UVBI or H202 treatments.

When all else fails, then try a UVBI & H202 treatment as stated by Dr. Campbell.

About the Author
Ricky has over 30 years in maintenance and reliability as a maintenance manager, maintenance supervisor, maintenance training specialist, field engineer, maintenance mechanic, maintenance consultant and is a well known published author. Ricky has worked with maintenance organizations in hundreds of facilities, industrial plants, ships, etc, world wide in developing reliability, maintenance and technical training strategies.

Prior to joining Allied Reliability in 2008, Ricky worked as a professional maintenance employee for Exxon Company USA, Alumax (this plant was rated the best in the world for over 18 years), Kendall Company, and Hercules Chemical providing the foundation for his reliability and maintenance experience.

Ricky is the co-author of “Rules of Thumb for Maintenance and Reliability Engineers”, “Lean Maintenance” and “Industrial Repair, Best Maintenance Repair Practices”. Ricky also writes for different magazines during the past 20 years on technical, reliability and maintenance subjects.

Ricky holds certification as Certified Plant Maintenance Manager from the Association of Facilities Engineering as well as a Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional from the Society for Maintenance and Reliability Professionals.

Ricky lives in Charleston, SC with his wife. Aside form spending time with his 3 children and 3 grandchildren, Ricky enjoys kayaking, fishing, hiking and archaeology.

Mr. Mobley is president and CEO of Integrated Systems Inc. of Knoxville, Tenn. He has written numerous publications on such topics as plant performance, maintenance engineering, maintenance management, and predictive maintenance. He is also a contributing editor for Plant Services magazine.

When ever you ask an advice of how to improve your knowledge in any particular subject, and to become professional on it, the first thing they will tell you: learn from experts, read from the leaders on their filed.

I red many books in Reliability and Maintenance engineering, nothing is like this book, Ricky Smith, and Keith Mobley, include all the information we need as a Maintenance and Reliability professionals on this book.

It contains the information you need about maintenance management, preventive maintenance, condition monitoring, KPI, industrial machinery, and check lists. It is not a theoretical but it's something practical use can bring it into practice easily.

I never let that book out of my desk, I always refer to it, and I used it as a reference on my papers, presentations and business cases.

I recommend every maintenance and reliability professional to get that book.

An Excellent Resource

This book is an excellent resource for new reliability engineers, experienced reliability engineers, and even maintenance managers. For the new reliability engineer, it gives good introductions into what reliability engineering is and general descriptions of how major pieces of equipment work and malfunction. For the experienced reliability engineer, it provides details on how to correctly perform Root Cause Analysis and FMEA, and to how to develop and track metrics. For the maintenance manager, it describes how reliability engineering fits into the maintenance organization and how an effective reliability program can reduce safety and environmental risk, increase run time, and save your company money. If your company is in need of a reliability program or has one that needs improvement, this is the book to get.

This is book is an excellent tool for those interested in the reliability and maintenance field. It provides a very practical overview of how global common maintenance practices should be implemented at the workplace. It is related to real case scenarios and explained in a very simple way so the real message can be esaily understood.

I recommend this book 100% for those starting an exciting career in the maintenance and reliability engineering field.
