About the Author
Barbara Backer, M.Ed., is an early childhood consultant and freelance writer who taught preschool for 20 years. For the past 11 years she has written extensively for preschool teachers and parents of preschool children. She has authored more than a dozen books and published over one hundred articles in magazines such as Woman's Day, Parent & Child, First Teacher, Highlights for Children, and Early Childhood News. Barbara received an award for Distinguished Merit in Education Publishing from the Education Press of America (EdPress) and a journalism award from the National Stuttering Foundation of America.

Useful information!

I've finally gotten my own classroom as a special needs preschool teacher and this book has a great many ideas and things to do with young children. I will be using it to include numerous ideas for the themes I've already picked out when I sit down to map out my school year.

Great tool for Stay at Home Moms

I purchased this book to use at home with my 3 year old. After teaching her colors, shapes, letters and numbers, I found myself struggling to come up with other creative lessons. I like the idea of weekly themes. I pick a theme for the week and every day, we do a little activity from the plans. I really like that there is a list of suggested books that go along with the theme. Although it is designed for a classroom, I found a lot of the activities were easy to modify for home use.
I felt compelled to write a review because someone gave bad marks for the book not being a weekly curriculum because it only has a week in November and December. Those plans are found in the Special Days and Holidays section. There is also a Science theme section, Me and
my World theme, Art theme and Miscellaneous theme sections that are not assigned to a specific date. So all together there are in fact atleast 52 weekly themes. I hope the reviewer realized this and did not return the book. It would be a shame to miss out on what this book has to offer.

Asserting a causal connection between diplomatic understandings reached then and war 36 years later, Bradley dramatizes his case with a delegation Theodore Roosevelt dispatched to Japan in the summer of 1905. Led by Secretary of War William Taft and ornamented by the president's quotable daughter Alice, it sailed while TR hosted the peace conference between victorious Japan and defeated Russia. As he recounts the itinerary of Taft's cruise, Bradley discusses attitudes of social Darwinism and white superiority that were then prevalent and expressed by TR and Taft. They modified their instincts, Bradley argues, in dealing with nonwhite Japan, and secretly conceded it possession of Korea. This is what Bradley asserts was a prerequisite to Pearl Harbor in 1941, a dubious thesis when the tensions of the 1930s stemmed from general Japanese aggressiveness, not its control of Korea per se. "An Outrage, Pure and Simple" (Wm. Tilchin)

Having finished the first 2 volumes of Edmund Morris' brilliant biography of TR, I foolishly blindly took someone's recommendation of this book. After reading the first few pages I suspected the author was a hack writer and fake historian who could not possibly carry the burden of his ridiculous premise that TR was essentially responsible for all of the wars and other ills of the 20th century. A simple Google search revealed that I was right. See http://historynewsnetwork.org/article/140862 . The list in that review of simple historical facts that Bradley got wrong is enough to condemn the book I will be tossing it in the trash and going on to Morris Volume 3.

Should be required high school reading

Whenever I read a book relating to history I will take a careful look at the references that are referred to. In the case of Bradley's book not only are the references extensive but can be will documented. If you talk with the natives in Hawaii you will find that they have little love for the United States. It is quite easy to document the displays at the World's Fair in 1904 in St. Louis, which speak to the truth of Bradley's book. This book should be required reading for every high school student. Roosevelt's carving on Mt. Rushmore should be chipped off.

James Bradley is masterful. Imperial Cruise, the third of Flags of our Fathers and Fly Boys, investigates and finds how, why, what, and who set in motion conditions and international relationships that eventually resulted in WW II in the pacific. It gave me an insight into Teddy Roosevelt's foreign affairs management that differs substantially from just the bravado and trust busting people's person that I was previously led to believe. Mount Rushmore has one too many faces on it.

About the Author
Jonathan Worstell earned his Physics degree from Northwestern University then switched to the chemical sciences, earning an MS in Chemistry from Ball State University and a PhD in Applied Chemistry from Colorado School of Mines. Dr. Worstell worked at Eli Lilly and Company and Northwestern University Medical School prior to starting a thirty year career in the petrochemical industry. After retiring from the petrochemical industry, he began an academic career at University of Houston where he teaches senior level chemical engineering courses. Dr. Worstell also consults with several global petrochemical companies.

About the Author
Susan Colley is the Andrew and Pauline Delaney Professor of Mathematics at Oberlin College and currently Chair of the Department, having also previously served as Chair. She received S.B. and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology prior to joining the faculty at Oberlin in 1983. Her research focuses on enumerative problems in algebraic geometry, particularly concerning multiple-point singularities and higher-order contact of plane curves. Professor Colley has published papers on algebraic geometry and commutative algebra, as well as articles on other mathematical subjects. She has lectured internationally on her research and has taught a wide range of subjects in undergraduate mathematics. Professor Colley is a member of several professional and honorary societies, including the American Mathematical Society, the Mathematical Association of America, Phi Beta Kappa, and Sigma Xi.

It's a very good book for what it does

I went through most of this text during a 1 quarter vector calculus course aimed at second and third year (US) math and physics undergrads. This book provides a reasonable mid-point between a standard calculus course where calculations are the main thrust of the course, and an analysis course where justifications are the main thrust of the course. This book does not include complete proofs for some of the more technical theorems, but it always includes proofs when the proof is helpful in understanding the theorem. This book also includes a gentle introduction to differential forms, which is very nice.

The aspect of this book that I appreciate the most is that it tries to provide very clear geometric and physical interpretations of the various standard vector calculus theorems. For whatever reason, this is unusual, which is sad. This approach makes these theorems much more accessible to an audience that is more comfortable with envisioning physical systems than with mathematical proof.

very good entry book for science/engineering students

I like this book very much. I took multivariable with the famous Thomas' calculus volume 2 at high school (it was used at Princeton University freshman class, and MIT freshman class). I now take a freshman calculus 2 course with this book. The level is not so much different from Thomas'. Just a bit in more theory oriented discussions. But the book is very well written, and in many respect very similar in tone and style to Thomas'. I am happy to "repeat" multivariable calculus with a minor level-up since I did not wish to jump into real analysis outright. I do not intend to major in math, and for me this is the right level. I also looked upon Buck's advanced calculus book, and it was visibly higher level in theory. I am not sure if I should go through Buck's book after this though since the differential form notation is introduced in the last chapter. I also liked chapter 7, which prepares me for multivariable-based physics 2 (E&M) course I will be taking next semester. The problems seem to be more calculation oriented (at the similar level as Thomas'), but the text discussions are more theory inclined (rather than theory oriented). Overall, I highly recommend this book to students whose background and motivation is like me (science/engineering major student).

Superlative

This book covers all the standard vector calculus material. What sets it apart is the pedagogic skill of the author. It is very carefully written and motivated, with clear worked examples for each new concept. A student could work through this book independently.

The author has included a brief section on differential forms in the last chapter and she presents Stokes' theorem in the language of forms. This is a modern formulation and she is to be praised for doing this. It is possible to move from this book on to modern texts on manifolds and differential geometry (such as the books by John Lee and Barrett O'Neill, for example).
