About halfway through this rip-snorting adventure thriller, a "white-haired man" rescues heroes Dirk Pitt Jr. and his sister, Summer, from death by drowning. That man is revealed to be author Cussler (Trojan Odyssey, etc.), reminding Dirk of "an older version of his own father," legendary oceanographer Dirk Pitt, hero of Cussler's previous novels. Just as the primary action baton is passed in this tale from Pitt Sr. to Jr., readers may note that Cussler's coauthor is his own son. But even if Cussler is beginning to pass on his writing baton, he's doing so with panache: thriller fans will revel in this action-packed yarn of land- and sea-based derring-do stuffed with technical details on matters from biochemical weapons "chimeras" to rocket launches. The villain is a South Korean industrialist working for the North Koreans with an eye toward unifying Korea by ridding the country of American troops, allowing for an invasion of the South. His plan is to aim a sea-borne rocket filled with a combo of deadly viruses at Los Angeles, with clues laying blame on Japanese terrorists, thus distracting America while the North makes its move. But villain and modus operandi matter less than the series of exciting hairbreadth escapes wrought by Dirks Jr. and Sr. and Summer—including Dirk Sr.'s escape from being poached alive in a minisub trapped underneath massive rocket boosters spewing an inferno of flames. There's a slight, nasty gloss of "yellow peril" on the villain and his actions, and it's only the Americans who greet likely death with a grin and a quip, but that's a minor knock on some major entertainment that's bound toward the top of the charts.

Adult/High School–Two Japanese submarines loaded with deadly chimera virus head for the west coast of the United States during the waning days of World War II but are sunk before ever endangering the coast. Sixty years later, South Korean industrialist Kang learns of their whereabouts and tests the deadly potion on some animals and a few people in Alaska. When the death reports start coming in, research sends Dirk Pitt, the younger; his sister; his crew from NUMA (National Underwater and Marine Agency); Dirk Pitt, the elder; and other forces on a race against time to prevent Kang from unleashing the virus. He dreams of creating a frenzy of blame between the countries for such an attack even as he takes joy in the fact that hundreds of thousands of Americans would die in agony. The Cusslers provide a high tide of ocean-based adventure and creepy bad guys. Featuring plenty of intense action, the plot fairly runs across the pages, with even the quieter moments full of intrigue. Lots of historical facts and science thread their way into the story, giving it a sense of realism. Filled with submarines, technical discussions on all sorts of ocean machinery, and some facts about chimera viruses, the novel provides some basic knowledge of bioterrorism. Here is yet another Cussler epic--his twenty-eighth, for those who are counting. And it is the eighteenth entry in the Dirk Pitt adventure series, this one coauthored by Cussler's son. The story begins toward the end of World War II, and the Japanese have sent two submarines to the West Coast of the U.S. They are carrying a lethal new strain of biological virus, but neither vessel makes it to the designated target. Then, in 2007, a number of sea-lion deaths are reported along the western Alaska Peninsula, and birds and people in the area become sick and die, although no known environmental catastrophe or human-induced culprit is suspected. Called to the scene is Dirk Pitt, the head of the National Underwater Marine Agency, and his two sons, one a marine biologist, the other a marine engineer. Their task is to locate and recover the two subs from the ocean floor. There are the usual harrowing encounters, close calls, daring exploits, and--in the end--annihilation of the bad guys. Writing not the best, but some interesting geography

I write this as someone who has 98% of the Clive Cussler published corpus. My fourth star in this review represents my gratitude for looking up maps and history behind the books. Other reviewers have spoken to the quality of plotting and writing, and I agree with those who are lukewarm about those issues. However, as reviewers we are not authors of best sellers. I agree with reviewers who are not impressed with the Dirk Pitt kiddies: they are second generation competent people lacking the charisma of Buddies Since Elementary School Daddy Dirk and Uncle Al Giordino.
That said, I always look up the geography, geology, biology and history that lie behind the stories. If you do this, you will learn some material of interest. Cussler & Company have geopolitical points of view that appear throughout this book and in their other stories. "Black Wind" invokes the fear many people have about genetically modified bio-weapons, in this case a viral chimaera. For those who are interested in WW2 history, there is substantial easily accessible material concerning the War in the Pacific and the history of tensions between China and Japan. A warning might be helpful here, war crime data are on the Internet: do not look at this material if you have a delicate stomach. As for the biology, there are technical and non-technical papers that might be of interest if you want to follow the convoluted history of biological and chemical weaponry. As in "Black Wind," many countries have experimented with these notoriously unstable systems, all of them have had some nasty accidents. Those who design weapons of mass destruction seem not to understand at the start that their creators stand at "ground zero" for consequences if the stuff actually works. WMD are a frequent theme in the Cussler & Company works as horror subjects. Again, some technical material is not for the tender of temperament. Biology in other stories extends to the other-worldly character of Earth's oceans, which have truly scary denizens. Some of them are expected by landlubbers (sharks, for instance). But some, such as sea wasps in "Medusa," are a wake up call for those who think of swimming in the Indian Ocean or in specific pan tropical waters. Read sea wasp biology, look at online images and be informed. My favorite deep sea critter happens to be the vampire squid, which works like a predatory umbrella. Would like to see Dirk & Al deal with some of these.
With Americans in general shaky about their geographical savvy, looking up the geography of this and other stories is a valuable exercise. Cussler has fun with geography and history, modifying actual structures to suit geologic history, as in "Inca Gold." The fault region off Japan that played a role in the Fukushima Diaichi tsunami disaster is a character in "Dragon."
I like the oceans and geology of this planet (including hydrothermal vents) as characters in these tales. As of this writing, we live on the weirdest place in the known universe.

Start liking the junior more and more

Being an long time fan of Mr. Dirk Pitt and Al Giordano I must say I was a bit sceptic when Mr. Clive Cussler introdused Dirk Pitt (jr) and Summer in Valhalla Rising.
Though, that book with also Trojan Odyssey and Treasure of Khan beeing great stories, this one also falls for my pleasure.
Black Wind takes us thru the story with fast pace, great twists and with the humorous quotes from Dirk Pitt.
Also Dirk Pitt Sr and Al Giordano makes their appearance in this novel, and gives it the touch for topping it all.
Clive Cussler tense to incorporates history into his stories. This is what I like about his novels.

That quote is saying it all for me.
I love this "what if" scenarios. It's a novel, it's not non-fiction, but i takes real history and starts it all with "what if".
Plot introduction:
The novel centers around a North Korean plot to launch a biological warfare attack on the United States, creating an opportunity for the invasion and annexation of South Korea. Dirk Pitt Jr., his father, and his sister Summer must foil the plot and expose and stop the antagonists before a deadly toxin can be spread in released over Los Angeles.
The story's historical prologue takes place in December 1944. The commanding officer of the I-403, a Japanese I-400 class submarine, is given orders to launch a mysterious attack on the United States, a mission involving Japan's notorious biological warfare group, Unit 731. The I-403 reaches America's northwest coast, but is sunk before the mission can be carried out.

Japanese Plans to use deadly chemical warfare against USA toward end of WWII

Another Dirk Pitt suspenseful and very factual account of two Japanese submarines carrying the new float planes with smallpox virus bombs to use around the east coast. I could not stop reading the book because it was so exciting. I especially
enjoyed how actual facts and events of WWII mixed with fictional adventure made it one of the best books you will ever read
Book. If you read Clive Cussler books be sure to read this one it will put you on a you on a world trip that will never forget!
