Essential Muir: A Selection of John Muir's Best Writings (Essential) (California Legacy Book), by Fred D. White

An introduction to the great ''poetico-trampo-geologist-botanist and ornithologist-naturalist''

Preservationist. Inventor. Lobbyist. John Muir was many things at once, and he is California's best-known icon--so much so that his image was chosen to appear on the new state quarter. But the best way to know the man who founded the Sierra Club and helped create Yosemite National Park is to read his own words.

Essential Muir is the second volume in the California Legacy Essentials Collection. Taking the best of John Muir's writings on nature--in which he waxes ecstatic even as he accurately describes the scientific attributes of a flower--as well as his thoughts on religion and society, this book presents a fresh look at one of California's greatest literary figures. His love for nature was so powerful--and his description of it so compelling--it still inspires us a century later.

Well-researched, yet undermined by 2nd portion's lack of focus.
By Solo
No Logo is a surprisingly well-researched book, if you can get past the obvious contradiction on the front cover and binding of this major-label production. Whether the "All Rights Reserved" copyrighted logo is meant to be ironic or merely obligatory concessions to the publishing house, it still reflects Klein poorly: either as a powerless pawn or else having a bad sense of humor.

Purely on content, however, as all books should be judged, No Logo quickly shows you this is no left-wing, hippie diatribe of over-generalization, with facts shunted to the wayside. Instead, it reads like a well-planned documentary, meticulously annotated and researched. Klein masterfully identifies the root problem of laissez-faire economics, market-oriented policies, and capitalism in general. For those of us who are a bit slow to comprehend the dramatic shift that has taken place in the free-market business world, Klein neatly diagrams the subtle and not-so-subtle shifts the private, for-profit sector of mainstream business has taken in its quest to orient away from developing products and focus on the development of brands. This paradigmatic shift has launched a new era of capitalism, changing it drastically from our predecessors' definition.

Klein maps out the expansion of advertising into all aspects of human life, the lack of "unbranded space", the Borg-like assimilation process that marketing initiates, devouring all niches, reactions, backlashes and resistance. With this process of lifestyle branding and perpetual advertising adaption, Klein shows the effects of this system of separation of brands and products. She details the flood of franchising, corporate mergers, private-sectors profit-maker's censorship, outsourcing, the exploitation of third-world labor, the creation of "McJobs" inside service economies and the growth of temporary labor and permanent "freelancing".

Klein derails, however, in her attempts to document the anti-corporate activist movement. What has been so far a masterful critique of globalization and corporatism focuses instead on grassroots activism and culture jammers. She spends almost one hundred pages describing (without unqualified praise, to her credit) underground rings of vandals and lone "anti-brand" guerrillas who deface corporate advertising by some irrational belief that their actions will persuade mainstream, moderate Westerners to change their consumption habits to ones approved by vigilantes drawing skulls and rewriting logos. If her discussion of them is to document an overall noble and worthy cause (that is, anti-corporate resistance), then addressing culture jammers in anything but a negative light only serves to tarnish an up until now, very polished presentation. Along with eliminating this episode, Klein would do her cause service by eschewing her description of RTS's absurdities in favor of a more detailed assessment of collectives and people's movements, such as the Zapatistas: uprisings that are rooted firmly in the reality of economics and egalitarian living-- rather than the short-term frivolity of dangerous quasi-riots, or the childish response of throwing pies at CEOs.

Klein also fails to precisely pinpoint what exactly her target is. She explains that it is more than attacking branding; it is about citizenship, not consumerism. Neither is it about attacking corporations via purchasing power. She explains much about activists' activities, but by the time she concludes her narrative, she has done little to address what exactly is the goal-- besides her vague wish for "unbranded spaces". The afterword (written in 2002) perhaps provides a better insight into what she was getting at when she talks about egalitarian movements and non-homogenization.

No Logo is an excellent book if one is interested in learning the largely ignored facts about branding, advertising, and labor politics; it is not a very convincing polemic for those skeptical of non-privatized solutions. With the debilitating portrayal of culture jamming and RTS as equals to the more mature approaches of student and political organizations described, No Logo undoes itself in short order; easily dismissed by those of the conservative persuasion. Although Klein does cover the anti-globalization movement with a broad, documentary-style brush, the pages of No Logo lack cynosure towards social cooperative, collective solutions, feeling reactionary more than inspirational.

a keeper, wish i had this in hardbound.
By john r
this book is an excellent read for people trying to understand how modern marketing and branding works. Naomi answers a lot of questions about what brands are, why theyre important, how they work, and the consequences of them. I spent the first 5 chapters absolutely crucified by rage however, as her examples are very familiar.

Read it 2012
By Evelyn Waugh
As I just read this book, it didn't have the same impact it may have in 1999. Klein is almost optimistic about the changes she was seeing. However, 13 years later and addidas is still getting in trouble for using sweatshops to make clothing for the Olympics... Not much has changed. I didn't necessarily agree with her denouncement of advertisements, because in a way it seems a good advertisement is a form of art... but in general I felt pretty sad that we do this to the third world. Its important that we hold corperations responsible for the treatment of their workers in the third world...

Excellent book!

All the books from this Author are excellent, and this one if no exception. There are many book in this genre which are "recipe" books, and few writers are capable to explaining the insights of the use and dynamics of psychic energy. Think of this book as your introductory college chemistry book, any true scholar of the occult arts will understand its value.

"One of the most thoughtful and honest accounts ever written by a young Army officer confronting all the tests of life." -Bob Woodward

In this surprise bestseller, West Point grad, Rhodes scholar, Airborne Ranger, and U. S. Army Captain Craig Mullaney recounts his unparalleled education and the hard lessons that only war can teach. While stationed in Afghanistan, a deadly firefight with al-Qaeda leads to the loss of one of his soldiers. Written with unflinching honesty, this is an unforgettable portrait of a young soldier grappling with the weight of war while coming to terms with what it means to be a man.

From Booklist
Young Captain Mullaney’s admirable, literate autobiography, that of a veteran of combat in Afghanistan, adds much to knowledge of the modern army and makes a valuable contribution to the ongoing debate over what a “warrior” is these days. Mullaney wryly recounts his years at West Point and as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, then writes eloquently of infantry combat and the persistent burden of guilt for not bringing all his men home even as he makes his account a tribute to his fellow warriors. He concludes with sidelights on his teaching post at the U.S. Naval Academy and the moving story of his younger brother’s graduation from West Point and subsequent passage into the ranks of the warriors himself. Almost impossible to put down for anyone interested in the modern U.S. Army or in modern warfare in general. --Roland Green

Review
"[The Unforgiving Minute] is one man's story, warmly and credibly told, and its focus is on the idealism that he brought to military service. In Captain Mullaney's mind there is no contradiction between loyally following orders and intelligently wondering what purpose those orders serve.... The Unforgiving Minute finds both suspense and pathos in the events that took place under its author's command. Its fierce climactic battle is recreated in searing detail. But what gives this memoir its impact isn't the external events that it describes. It's the inner journey of a man who is at first eager to learn as much as he can from service and scholarship. Later on he learns from his mistakes."
-The New York Times

"The Unforgiving Minute is a wonderful, beautifully written story of the education and development of a young soldier-scholar, the coming of age of an infantry officer, and the exercise of a small unit leader's responsibilities in a tough, complex, and frustrating situation in Afghanistan. It captures particularly eloquently and movingly the relationships among those who walk point for our nation as part of that most elite of fraternities, the brotherhood of the close fight."
-General David Petraeus, Commander, U.S. Central Command

"Craig Mullaney's memoir is a thoughtful, introspective work reminiscent of the great British memoirs of World War I. A thousand years from now, historians wanting to know about life in America after 9/11 would do well to look at this book. Equally important, it is an enjoyable and honest book. Read it."
-Thomas E. Ricks, author of New York Times bestseller FIASCO: The American Military Adventure in Iraq and senior military correspondent, The Washington Post

"[Craig Mullaney] ultimately delivers far more than the boy-to-man story that he promised.... In this extraordinary book, Mullaney has taken the trouble to look very closely, and has had the courage to discover the limits to his own understanding. Readers will be fascinated to look over his shoulder."
-Washington Post Book World

"Craig Mullaney has lived every kind of American life-he has been a working- man's son, a prize scholar, a soldier-and what's come out of it is a classic memoir about what it means to be American. By marching so many terrains, he has covered the subjects central to every life: courage, pain, loyalty, honor, friendship, love and the tests any good life faces, year by year, minute by minute. He has also produced a page-turner, a brutally honest account of West Point life, the innocence-abandoned experiences of an American abroad at Oxford, and ultimately an indelible story of life and death on the battlefield. In words his squadmates might recognize, I recommend The Unforgiving Minute without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion."
-David Lipsky, contributing editor to Rolling Stone Magazine and author of the New York Times bestseller Absolutely American

"The Unforgiving Minute is one of the most compelling memoirs yet to emerge from America's 9/11 era. Craig Mullaney has given us an unusually honest, funny, accessible, and vivid account of a soldier's coming of age. This is more than a soldier's story; it is a work of literature."
-Steve Coll, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Ghost Wars and The Bin Ladens

"Former Army Capt. Craig Mullaney admits up front that, emotionally, he takes after his expressive Irish mother, who is "incapable of stemming a tear." Mullaney is less candid and perhaps unaware of his talent for evoking emotion in others..... But The Unforgiving Minute is far from heavy and never maudlin. Mullaney's sense of humor is obvious....It is Mullaney's clear-eyed, warm- hearted candor that elicits empathy.... This self-effacing frankness makes his coming- of- age-in-uniform memoir a charmer.... Stunning [and] pertinent."
-The Army Times "The Unforgiving Minute is the ultimate's soldier's book-universal in its raw emotion and its understanding of the larger issues of life and death. Mullaney, a master storyteller, plunges the depths of self-doubt, endurance, and courage. The result: a riveting, suspenseful human story, beautifully told. This is a book written under fire-a lyrical, spellbinding tale of war, love, and courage. The Unforgiving Minute is the Three Cups of Tea of soldiering."
-Ahmed Rashid, author of the New York Times bestseller Taliban and Descent into Chaos

"The Unforgiving Minute is a gripping account of a young military officer's quest to prepare for the unknowns of leadership under fire, and his eventual testing in Afghanistan. With unflinching candor, Mullaney depicts his evolution from idealistic teenager to reflective veteran who retains his conviction and patriotism once his innocence is lost. His emotional, often funny memoir takes us to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, through the rigors of Army Ranger school, then on to drunken debates and romance at Oxford, where he had a Rhodes Scholarship.... The book [is] a departure from traditionally dry military memoirs --it reads like a work of literature.... Mullaney's evolution through his intellectual and emotional journey grips on every page; his writing contains a modesty that becomes more endearing as his achievements mount. This is a classic coming-of-age memoir and a valuable insight into post-Sept. 11 conflict."
-Bloomberg.com

"Mullaney writes a great story-a true privilege to read. Entertaining, balanced, and graceful, The Unforgiving Minute is a powerful narrative of purpose, responsibility, courage, and personal growth. Every young man and woman in America should read this book, and aspire to his standard of public service."
-General Wesley Clark, USA (Ret.)

"The Unforgiving Minute is a classic memoir of war and personal development. Craig Mullaney has provided a far greater service to his nation by penning a riveting memoir that should be mandatory reading by every junior officer who dons the military uniform."
-ARMY Magazine

"I recommend The Unforgiving Minute because it is superb and important.... Read the book and you know the caliber of the men and women leading our troops and the troops themselves. More importantly, Craig shows the price of service to country and the cost of sacrifices so few individuals endure in our name."
-The Huffington Post

"Craig Mullaney has written a poignant and evocative book about the great hurdles in coming of age: love, death, belief, and betrayal. Learning from his experience can help us face our own unforgiving minutes. I couldn't stop reading."
-Nathaniel Fick, author of the New York Times bestseller One Bullet Away

"Insightful... This book should be read, certainly, by everyone who has a loved one who is serving in the military, has served or might one day serve. But it also should be required reading for all Americans.... His is a remarkable journey, recounted with unflinching honesty, thoughtful reflection, occasional humor and hard-won wisdom.... An unusual book that combines grittily realistic accounts of war with highly educated reflection and introspection.... If enough people read [The Unforgiving Minute], then perhaps we as a country would not have such a profound lack of understanding of the volunteer troops we send to fight our wars, and of the sacrifices that they and their families make."
-Winston-Salem Journal

"One of the most thoughtful and honest accounts ever written by a young Army officer confronting all the tests of life---education, love, self-knowledge, combat, and the fates of war."
-Bob Woodward

"There have been a slew of memoirs, many very go

About the Author

He served three years on the history faculty of the U.S. Naval Academy, focusing on the history of American foreign policy. An Instant Classic
By Chris
The Unforgiving Minute is a spectacularly written, extremely accurate depiction of the life of a US Army Officer involved in the Global War on Terror. As a member of the West Point class of 2000, I've shared many experiences with Craig. These include not only our time at West Point, but also time that I spent at the same locations in Afghanistan a year after Craig. His accuracy and presentation are astounding, and the challenges he faces are real.

Beginning with his time as a cadet, Craig takes us through his 4 years at West Point, his time in Ranger school, and his attendance at Oxford as a Rhode's Scholar. He takes us on a journey of developing relationships with his soldiers, and then testing and growing those relationships on the battlefields of Afghanistan. The struggles that he details are something that all Army leaders deal with, but few can put to paper as well as Craig has.

In addition to all that, this book is a love story and a story of family hardships. This book is truly a page turner that I recommend to anyone. "The Unforgiving Minute" is an instant classic that I will read over and over again.

RICK "SHAQ" GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "DUST ON THE BRIM OF YOUR SERVICE CAP... COULD KILL YOUR PLATOON."
By Rick Shaq Goldstein
This is the life story of West Point graduate... Rhodes Scholar... Afghanistan veteran... Craig Mullaney... who also believe it or not... wound up teaching at the Naval Academy. The author takes you from his childhood which included great admiration for his hard working Father, to an in depth look at life for a plebe at the hallowed grounds of West Point. It's invigorating for the reader as Craig describes the demanding goals that are set so high for our future leaders... both physically... and academically. The smallest detail is never small enough to be overlooked. A tiny... seemingly insignificant detail now... can save a life on the battlefield. One of the most enjoyable parts of this literary journey are the quotations that are peppered throughout the story. They range from Plato: "ONLY THE DEAD HAD SEEN THE END OF WAR." to "WHO SEEKS PEACE MUST PREPARE FOR WAR."

After West Point Craig wins a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford, and in my opinion this is the one part of the book that loses a little traction. After completing his Oxford education the author enters Ranger School... and during this portion of his training it is literally impossible not to be in absolute awe of these future leaders of America. As an honorably discharged Viet Nam era veteran, I am amazed at the capability to push both the body... and the mind... past any logically accepted limits... and to have the inner strength and fortitude... to push both of them together in harmony. Another laudable character trait constantly displayed by the author throughout this story... is the fact that he... openly shares his fears... doubts... and uncertainties... with the reader. A sterling example of this is when he asks a war veteran: "HOW DO YOU KNOW HOW YOU'LL HANDLE COMBAT?" "YOU WON'T HE RESPONDED. YOU'LL NEVER KNOW UNTIL YOU'RE THERE." "WHAT YOU KNOW FOR CERTAIN IS THAT IT WILL BE CHAOTIC AND LOUD, AND YOU'LL BE READY TO PISS IN YOUR BOOTS. YOU'LL BE MORE SCARED OF LETTING DOWN YOUR MEN THAN ANYTHING THE ENEMY'S GONNA DO TO YOU. AND THEN YOU'LL LEAD FROM INSTINCT AND JUDGMENT. THAT'S THE PRICE OF A SALUTE."

Craig adeptly summarizes his lessons learned from his military and Oxford education when he said: "Where the military academy had taught me how to answer questions, Oxford taught me what to ask." As Craig is deployed to Afghanistan the following words of wisdom echo in his head: "BE POLITE. BE PROFESSIONAL. BE PREPARED TO KILL EVERYONE YOU MEET."

In Afghanistan every bit of Craig's education and training comes in to play as he becomes a leader of men in combat. This tale of a young man with military aspirations takes you full circle from the classroom to specialized training to war and back to the classroom... as an Army man... training young Navy plebes. When the author's younger brother graduates West Point... Craig battles with his inner demons... as to what he should tell him. I say... simply give him this book to read.

Everyone Must Read This. Changed My Mind About the Military
By Q.
I live in Berkeley, CA, and like most of the population here, am as far to the left politically as it is possible to get. I have always had a negative view of the military in general and in particular, of the kind of person who would volunteer for it. It has seemed to me to be the sort of thing men (and to a lesser extent women) do who want to have power over others, and who need to feel superior to others. Needless to say, news from Abu Ghraib did nothing to change my perception of this.

Mullaney's story, however, has changed my mind. His sense of integrity, honor, and humility, along with others he served with, comes across so clearly in his writing, that I have had to re-evaluate my beliefs about military culture. He is the kind of person I would actually trust to carry a gun, and to represent the U.S. in other countries. I can only assume that he would not love the army so much unless it was filled with other people holding values similar to his. He wrote in the Author''s Note that he hoped his book would help America better understand its military. He has done that for me, and I believe many like me will feel the same.

I recommend this book to every American--to those who love the military, and especially to those who think they hate it.

Give there are >225 main questions that can work out as one to two weeks of your life, and of course, I have to tell you that the longer you take to work through it the more time you should work on this stuff to get the job you want. ...

Hands on practice
By S. Gaal
I completely agree with the previous opinion.
I have been interviewing with investment banks for some period. The permanent difficulty has been how to prepare for the interview. Who is a bit familiar with the topic knows, that virtually any subject ( from Lie groups and connexions to IFRS bookkeeping standards ) can pop up during the interviews. Given the time constraint for the preparation theses technical interviews are always a "pain in the arse".
But not any longer. Actually the problems in this book ARE the questions which are asked by the firms. Just to name a few :
1. Solve the OU equation and get its moments ( Lehman )
2. What are martingales, filtration, etc ( BarCap )
3. Generate exponentially distributed random numbers in 2D ( Morgan Stanley )
4. The barrier options and their vega ( ABN Amro )
5. Hedging and its practices ( a small IT firm in Munchen )
6. And a LOT ( really ) of coin throwing, binomial trees, mostly associated with practical finanacial problems ( CDS, ameriacan and barrier options, etxc).
7. Soring algorithms

These problems ARE covered in the problem set. So if you can solve, say, 70% of all questions it must be sufficient to get through the interviews.

There are some problems with the book. It should contain a bit more stuff on PDE's and first generation exotics. E.g.
1. Schetch the quantitative behavoiur of a solution of a double barrier for a given payoff
2. Derive the price for a perpetual up and in option ( etc )

I am recommending this book with the books of Joshi ( Concepts of Finance ) and Rebonato ( the perfect hedger and the fox ).
If you interview for a senior position these books may also suit you, since you are often grilled with these coin throwing things even for a VP position.

Great Practice
By Sidhant
This is a great book if you need to prepare for quantitative interviews of any kind, and not just quantitative finance interviews. The book has a nice collection of logic and probability puzzles which get asked at a variety of interviews. Then there are lots of Black-Scholes, option pricing questions which might be of help to those facing quant interviews. There are math questions from complex analysis, matrix theory that I found really good.

All questions are solved, and the author also gives some follow up questions after the solutions. I often found some of these follow up questions very hard, and maybe the author can give some hints to them too. The author runs a website where you can interact with him, but then I am sure he is too busy to be answering all queries. So maybe in a future edition he will drop some hints to some of the harder follow up problems too.

And in the probability questions, the author doesnt use ideas from stochastic theory, which could lead to some problems being solved really quick. So maybe the author should also consider including alternative solutions to questions, whenever and whereever possible.

Good, but could be more clear
By jchen
I am a math finance student who will soon start a summer internship on Wall Street. I want to leave feedback for the best and worst books that I used in my studies so far.

The book is well balanced. The advice on the interviewing process and what should expect there is excellent. Topics covered:
Options pricing
Probability
Interest rates
Numerical techniques
Mathematics
Coding in C++
Brainteasers

There are extra questions (but with no solutions) in each chapter.

The solutions are good and detailed. One comment is that the questions are thrown together in a way that makes it hard to know which ones are easy/hard, and are more likely to be asked in first interviews. But if you know everything in the book you look really good on interviews.

Regenesis: How Synthetic Biology Will Reinvent Nature and Ourselves, by George M. Church, Ed Regis

“Bold and provocative… Regenesis tells of recent advances that may soon yield endless supplies of renewable energy, increased longevity and the return of long-extinct species.”—New Scientist

In Regenesis, Harvard biologist George Church and science writer Ed Regis explore the possibilities—and perils—of the emerging field of synthetic biology. Synthetic biology, in which living organisms are selectively altered by modifying substantial portions of their genomes, allows for the creation of entirely new species of organisms. These technologies—far from the out-of-control nightmare depicted in science fiction—have the power to improve human and animal health, increase our intelligence, enhance our memory, and even extend our life span. A breathtaking look at the potential of this world-changing technology, Regenesis is nothing less than a guide to the future of life.

could have been one chapter
By John
A book outlining the future of sythetic biology and its implications is long overdue, but this book achieves neither. The examples given of synthetic biology are poorly described and tend to jump around (the very interesting chapter titles actually have no bearing on what is written and give the false impression that the book is structured). The authors spent very little time developing a cohesive philosophy about how our culture should approach this novel technology and instead resort to a "gee isn't that cool" kind of approach.

Overall, the book just seemed really fluffy. Many of the points made were repeated over and over without any depth. Instead, the authors fill pages by going into extensive detail about irrelevant matters, such as devoting several pages to describing the building where a convention on synthetic biology was hosted.

As a biology researcher, I can say this is definitely not for anyone with a background in science. Also, lay people looking for examples of synthetic biology should look elsewhere because this book does a poor job explaining things. Finally, those interested in the ethics of these issues will not find any interested arguments here on either side.

A Brief Summary and Review
By A. D. Thibeault
*A full executive summary of this book is available here: An Executive Summary of George M. Church and Ed Regis's 'Regenesis: How Synthetic Biology Will Reinvent Nature and Ourselves'

DNA was only discovered about a century ago, and its structure remained a mystery until about half a century ago, but since this time our knowledge and understanding of DNA has grown immensely (indeed exponentially). What's more, this understanding has evolved to include not just an understanding of how DNA works, but also how it can be manipulated to help advance our ends. The most glaring example here is the phenomenon of genetically modified food. Though not without controversy initially (and some fringe opposition that lives on to this day), it is fair to say that genetically modified food was one of the major scientific advances of the 20th century. Over and above this, our understanding of DNA appeared to reach its most impressive manifestation with the successful sequencing of the human genome in the year 2000.

For the genetics professor and pioneering genetic engineer George Church, however, genetically modified food and the Human Genome Project are but the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the potential of genomics. Indeed, since the year 2005, the exponential growth rate in our ability to read and write DNA has increased from 1.5-fold per year (a rate that matches Moore's law), to the incredible rate of 10-fold per year (p. 243). This explosion in scientific and technological progress has resulted in dramatic advancements in the areas of biochemicals, biomaterials, biofuels and biomedicine. What's more, advancements in these technologies are but in their incipient stage, and the future of genomics promises to dwarf these initial achievements. In his new book 'Regenesis: How Synthetic Biology Will Reinvent Nature and Ourselves' George Church takes us through the developments that have occurred recently in the area of genomics, and also where these developments are likely to take us in the future.

When it comes to the current state of the field, manipulating DNA has already allowed us to produce organisms with new features, such as foodstuffs with novel properties, greater productivity and nutritional value, and resistance to pathogens. Over and above this, micro-species have been programmed to do such things as detect impurities in drinking water, produce electricity from waste-water (and purify the waste-water in the process), produce blood, produce vaccines, take pictures, and even store information. Indeed, the potential to use DNA as a store of information is already recognized to be the likely next leap in computer science, and is poised to initiate a revolution in informatics (just imagine storing all of the information in Wikipedia [in every language] on a chip the size of a blood cell, for a cost of $1 for 100,000 copies [p. 197]).

And, of course, the potential to manipulate genomes does not end with other species: it can also be extended to our own. Actualizing this potential is not far off, and includes such things as increasing intelligence, gaining full immunity to any pathogen (real or hypothetical), and dramatically extending the lifespan (if not removing mortality altogether).

In addition to manipulating genomes for the purpose of creating new biological features, the productive capacity of the genome can also be exploited to produce new substances and materials, such as chemicals, plastics, fuels, drugs, and vaccines. Successes in each of these areas has already been achieved, and the field is on the cusp of scaling-up these processes to an industrial scale. What's more, manipulating genes shows the promise of expanding the current repertoire of the building blocks of substances and materials to produce a whole new array thereof.

Church's book both is both invigorating and inspiring. However, it should be noted that the book is fairly technical throughout, and will only be easily-digested by a reader who already has a fairly deep understanding of the field. Having said that, an educated general reader equipped with a good amount of patience will have no trouble following the argument, and should learn a great deal in the process. Fantastic Book! Fascinating, Fun and Frightening!
By AmazonJavaJunki
I must agree with the above reviewer...this is an absolutely terrific book. Thanks to the superb review (and obvious enthusiasm) I opted to order this book on the spur of the moment while listening to a short interview with the author. Couldn't be more pleased. This book is absolutely fantastic. It's fun, it's downright frightening in some ways but it is fabulous across the board.

The author does a terrific job of making this somewhat complex topic accessible to the average reader. There are areas where I find myself wanting more information and a few areas of a bit less interest but overall, it presents a dramatic future view of the potential of synthetic biology including the promise and peril. Will it look exactly like this in the future...probably not but this gives great insight into the direction and trends rather than the specifics. Readers are likely to find at least a few things that are downright thrilling as well as some that are chilling to even contemplate. Clearly the legal limits haven't kept up with the emerging technology...an area that will need a lot of attention at some point in the future. Delightful book!

About the Author
Fidel Castro (1926-) led a guerrilla movement in Cuba that overthrew the Batista dictatorship in 1959. Despite innumerable assassination attempts, the Cuban president was the nemesis of 10 US administrations. He retired due to ill-health in August 2006, but has continued to make characteristically forthright comments on world events and US-Cuba relations. Obama is the eleventh US president to confront Fidel Castro.

An appeal to our humanity
By Malvin
"Obama and the Empire" is an excellent collection of short "reflections" written from May 2008 through June 2010 by the legendary Fidel Castro, who today remains one of the most authentic living critics of the U.S. capitalist state. Filled with numerous insights gained over a lifetime spent successfully resisting empire, Mr. Castro poses the kinds of questions that only someone who has no fear could ask. Indeed, Mr. Castro's ability to forcefully speak truth to power makes him an invaluable if unlikely ally to countless Americans who might be pondering their country's future.

Mr. Castro astutely perceives that there are two Obamas: a person who embodies the hopes and aspirations of the American people; and a chief executive whose ambitions are bound to serve the narrow interests of capital. On the one hand, Mr. Castro generally lauds Obama for his intellect, work ethic and mastery of issues such as global warming. On the other hand, Mr. Castro laments that Obama has been unwilling to act decisively on issues that might prove beneficial to humanity while working frantically to prop up a fatally flawed and unsustainable economic system. Not that any of this comes as a surprise to Mr. Castro; as a witness to the eleventh president to hold office since the Cuban Revolution, Mr. Castro knows full well that Obama's power is constrained by the demands of the economic system over which he presides.

Mr. Castro knows a thing or two about armed struggle, and it is perhaps on this topic that his criticism carries the most weight. Obama is faulted for escalating the unwinnable war in Afghanistan; colonizing the nation of Colombia with military bases; and of course, refusing to lift the embargo on Cuba at a time when even some Republican senators have indicated a willingness to change. However, Mr. Castro is most impressive when he seamlessly ties U.S. foreign policy to the expansionist needs of America's economy. Highlighting Obama's continued funding of the military/industrial complex, Mr. Castro questions why the president finds nothing wrong with allowing robotic weapons to do the dirty work of projecting American power into distant lands.

On that point, Mr. Castro provides a useful perspective from the world's poorer nations. Most Americans rarely consider how our insatiable thirst for human and physical resources might impose higher labor, food and fuel costs on others; nor do we often acknowledge that our consumption habits might be squandering an opportunity to use the earth's resources more wisely and equitably with the goal of lifting up others from poverty. With a billion hungry people in a world that is already feeling the effects of global warming and with little power to challenge the American war machine, Mr. Castro's appeal to our humanity could not be more timely.

I highly recommend this slender (134 pages) but important book to everyone.

Recently Expanded Edition: At eighty-six he remains leading voice for sanity in our hemisphere; this review of new 2012 edition
By Love Thy Enemy
This previously published collection of essays has recently been expanded and updated to include Fidel's thoughts around the assassination attempt of Rep. Gifford in Arizona, the US 2011 State of the Union Address, etc. This volume closes considering the illegal killing of Bin Laden and its effects on our history, our world, the local society and his family, who were present.

He interrupts this global consideration of this illegal and immoral assassination by making the global local, in recalling correctly: "Still engraved in the minds of hundreds of millions of people are also the horrible images of human beings who, for months and even for years, have been submitted to unbearable and excruciating torture in Guantanamo, an illegally occupied territory in Cuba. They were kidnapped and transferred to secret prisons with the hypocritical connivance of supposedly civilized countries (p. 154)."

For more on the situation of immorality, illegality and injustice still on-going on Guantanamo Bay, please study carefully the excellent and tragic chronicle For God And Country: Faith and Patriotism Under Fire.

This book thus closes considering validly and rationally and substantially the assassination of Ossama Bin Laden by the US government. The penultimate chapter explores the US invasion of Libya, with the driving motive being as everywhere, oil.

We must read this important chapter with our most serious consideration (and like the people of Nineveh hearing the message of Jonah: our deepest sincere repentance), as it begins globally and then specifically to explain why we invade nations with whom we are not at war. Within this informative and clarifying chapter we find this sentence: "The squandering of oil and gas is associated with one of the greatest tragedies, which is far from being resolved, which is suffered by humankind, climate change (p. 147)." With that broad perspective, this essay, drafted February 21, 2011, concludes, after retracing the heroic history of the Libyan revolution, with this warning: "An honest person will always be against any injustice being committed against any people in the world. And, at this moment, the worst thing would be to remain silent in the face of the crime that NATO is getting ready to commit against the Libyan people. The leadership of that war-mongering organization will attack Libya. We must condemn it (p. 149)!" Well, it did, and we all fail to, until now . . .

In the midst of an analysis of our president's address to a grieving Arizona mourning those six killed and congress-lady gravely wounded along with fourteen others on January 8, 2011, President Fidel again takes the global perspective, recounting the facts of the failing US economy, of crop failures worldwide due to climate change, and the dangers of nuclear warfare in this present political instability. Please study these chapters carefully, rationally, and follow up with further study, until at long last even you can act.

There is so much of gold within this volume that I wish to share with you, chapter by chapter, brilliant, correct analysis of where we are and why, but I urge you please to read this book, especially now, in our coming insanity of an election year in which we are buried and baffled by lies rather than these truths, bravely and clearly spoken.

This book carefully weighs events in the Obama administration over the past three years, from May of 2008 through May of this year, 2011 in thirty three insightful essays by President Fidel Castro, and must be read by every American. Forget who wrote them; read them, and find the assumptions we have cherished and are sold melting under the broader light of reason. Great antidote to our national media.
