Garcia-Lopez began drawing comics professionally in Argentina at age 13; he came to the U.S. in 1974 and quickly began receiving plum assignments. The dynamic yet graceful style he developed mostly in pirate and other historical stories before immigrating proved ideal for the superhero genre, and eventually he was asked to design the style guides for definitive versions of the likes of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman to be used in licensing. Most closely associated with costumed crime fighters, Garcia-Lopez has occasionally done science fiction, westerns, even the Depression-era Road to Perdition graphic novels. The book's long interview isn't particularly revealing--like many comics artists, Garcia-Lopez's approach seems largely instinctive--but offers insight into the work life of an extremely successful journeyman comics artist. The main appeal here lies in the illustrations, which include pages (many in the original pencil versions), sketches, character designs, and concept drawings for the film Batman Returns. Gordon Flagg

BRILLIANT & UNDERRATED ARTIST

I guess the two words that come to mind when I think about comic book artist Jose Luis Garcia Lopez are consistent and underrated. Those two words seem to best describe the career of a man who rarely has gotten the accolades he deserves as one of the great artists of the last 25 years. After reading the lengthy interview with him in this volume five of the Modern Masters series from TwoMorrows Publishing, certainly Jose's humble and quiet nature seems to be one of the reasons he is so underrated. He's clearly a guy who isn't looking for the spotlight. He hasn't tried to match the younger artists of the day by doing books filled with nothing but splash pages and poor anatomy. He's just been content to be a dependent workhorse for DC comics. While Jose may not have achieved the level of stardom that other artists have, you get the feeling that it really doesn't matter to him. There's a lot of laughter throughout the interview and Jose seems very happy with his career.

Jose was born in Spain but moved to Argentina with his family when he was very young. He would get his America comic book start with Charlton on mainly romance titles. Jose's many eclectic influences are certainly a factor behind his level of professionalism. From old masters Alex Raymond and Hal Foster, to modern artists like Moebius and Ross Andru, and to great illustrators like Norman Rockwell, Jose relates just how each of these men as influenced his work through the years.

Jose would start at DC in the late 1970's and worked on a variety of projects. Jose did much of the art for DC's merchandising and marketing campaigns including their "Got Milk?" ad featuring Superman. Jose was also the artist who worked on DC's first graphic novel Star Raiders. Interviewer Eric Nolen-Weathington does a wonderful job covering Jose's very diverse career in comics, even getting into the mediums in which Jose likes to work in and his preferred types of tools which is invaluable advice for aspiring comic artists. My personal favorite was the work he did on the Deadman limited series and kudos to TwoMorrows for reprinting some of the work inside this book.

The interview runs through the first three-quarters of the book. The last part is dedicated to a Jose Luis Garcia Lopez art gallery displaying numerous sketches, finished works, covers, and pages from throughout his distinguished career. There's a fantastic drawing of Elvira, Mistress of the Dark sitting on Santa's lap, sketches and color guides from the Cinder & Ashe limited series and two brilliant illustrations, one featuring Wonder Woman and another with Superman and Lois Lane.

Hats off to TwoMorrows Publishing for aiming the spotlight on this humble, under-appreciated talent!

One of my Top 3 favorites in the series...

What a great surprise this artist is for me! I bought this interview on the strength of the brilliant cover art- I'm happy to say the interior work is every bit as good.

Highlights here for me...
*The 1st 45 pages- I love everything about these pages. From his pirate-themed work in his early days, to his fantastic influences, to his definitive work for DC and their licensed merchandise, everything about this nearly 1st half of the book is beautiful & inspiring.
*Pencils & inks displayed- it's not just inked work reproduced. I really love JLGL's art in pencil *without* inks, so it's nice to see some of his purely penciled work included. Of course his inked stuff is great as well.

This interview actually goes well with John Buscema's How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way; compared side-by-side, it almost serves as a DC version of that book. It's an interview & not a how-to-draw type work, but JLGL's art is a standard of excellence in regards to definitive depictions of DC characters. The current covers of these books seem similar too, with their variety of major characters & white, yellow, red, and blue color schemes. Both volumes are also similar in physical size, although Marvel Way has more pages.

Unlike my other 2 favorites in the series, this interview includes some color work along with the many pieces of black & white artwork displayed throughout. Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez is highly praised with reason: just check out the picture of Superman & Lois flying high over a cityscape complete with rainbow (p.117) to see what I mean. Truly fantastic pencils!

My other current favorites in the series include Modern Masters, Vol. 7: John Byrne (Modern Masters), and Modern Masters Volume 2: George Perez. Yet they keep on releasing great interviews!

About the Author
Daniel Simon is an internationally acclaimed designer and trailblazing virtual image creator. He worked for hyper car maker Bugatti and collaborated with Formula 1, Puma and Lotus. Simply Inspiring.

From the moment some time during the Summer that I heard of this book's December release, I counted down the days. Having purchased and pored over "Cosmic Motors" many times over, I looked forward to seeing how Daniel Simon would present the story of a time-traveling racer.

I ordered three copies of the Limited Edition, one for a good friend, and one for my boss, who both share the same love for cars, racing and design. I can safely say that we all thoroughly enjoy this book, and I am constantly looking it over, absorbing more and more of the story, design and details with every read. I always make sure I have a sketch pad and pen nearby when I read this book. The presentation, from the red-and-white hard cover, to the high-resolution images and sketches, are really impressive, and I cannot wait for the subsequent releases in this series. I am also hoping for the possibility of this series becoming a feature film. Way to go, Mr. Simon.

I have not enough words to express my admiration for this book and Daniel’s talent and taste. I ordered all three edition, unlimited, limited (two of each) and pitlane.
I've never seen such a beautiful book, full with fantastic car design ideas, improvisation of styles, brilliant presentation technique, graphic design, refined taste, extraordinary renderings and fantastic publication. Thank you to Design Studio Press for publishing such a beautiful book.
What inspires me, that it is just the beginning and will be continuation of the series and Daniel’s creativity.
I wish “The Cosmic Motors”, Daniel’s another extraordinary and fantastic book published by Design Studio Press, could be republished in a same large format 12” x 14” with the slipcase and revised edition included the Oblivion’s ingenious Bubble ship.

Third one will arrive Monday, first two damaged, called after the first one came, stating they need to add fore aft protection as the book slides around in the box and the corners get crushed...........So opened second one today - Same thing!

Book however it brilliant, I am glad I have it (well 3 of them at the moment!) I think i may have wished I had got the $300 one, but thats too much money, maybe it will be discounted............and if the $100 one has shipping issues......

Grade 9 Up–This dictionary is both too modest and too boastful: it condenses hundreds of myths and includes deities, heroes, saints, historical figures, animals, etc., with connections to art and literature, yet it is hardly exhaustive. Double the length of Tresidder's Dictionary of Symbols (Chronicle, 1998; o.p.), it preserves that work's format and adds a brief bibliography. Most of the author's Symbols and Their Meanings (Sterling, 2000) is also found here. Marginalia include primary-source citations and cross-references. Violet backgrounds distinguish 60 short articles on such diverse topics as Trojan War heroes, the Buddha, angels, avatars of Vishnu, dance, liberty, the jaguar, and more. The book includes many non-Western myths and symbols, but a broad perspective in some articles is lacking. The features on architecture, chastity, the ages of man, and religious orders are entirely European in focus. Many articles–e.g., on music, floods, fish, dragons, death, creation–are culturally broader. Africa deserves better coverage. Small black-and-white and/or violet graphics–useful, if not compelling–appear on most pages. Clare Gibson's Signs & Symbols (Grange) and Miranda Bruce-Mitford's Illustrated Book of Signs & Symbols (DK, both 1996), though less complete, will attract browsers with their color photos. Hans Biedermann's Dictionary of Symbolism (Facts On File, 1992) is better illustrated, more detailed on Western symbols, less global; Tresidder's volume offers high value for cost, if there is a myth/symbol gap on the reference shelf.–Patricia D. This is the first symbols source to be labeled complete, although the introduction does not specify the qualities that make it so. Its 2,000 entries are twice the number found in other resources on the topic, such as Tresidder's 1998 Dictionary of Symbols: An Illustrated Guide to Traditional Images, Icons, and Emblems (much of which is duplicated in the newer book). The alphabetically arranged entries focus on classical and Christian symbolism but encompass other traditions worldwide. In addition to traditional symbols (e.g., objects, animals, flowers, shapes), the volume includes legends, themes, or concepts important for understanding systems of symbols and historical, mythological, or religious figures. It also includes brief references to the use of the symbol in art. For example, the entry alchemy is identical to that in the Dictionary of Symbols except for a reference to the depiction of alchemists in Vasari's painting The Alchemist's Laboratory. The Complete Dictionary's articles range from a few sentences to one-page panels on more comprehensive topics (Colours; Elements; Music, musical instruments). Its format is similar to Dictionary of Symbols, with see references and sources placed awkwardly in the margins, where they might be missed. Bibliographical references are minimal; most cite only basic sources such as Psalms 42:1 for Stag or Pliny the Elder's Natural History for Phoenix. A geographically arranged bibliography at the end of the volume includes a good selection of older, classic texts on art, mythology, and religion. Illustrations are in-house drawings from original artifacts rather than actual photos. The Complete Dictionary of Symbols is an acceptable reference book for home and small libraries and for public libraries that need a symbol source for general readers. It overlaps very little with the fascinating, graphically oriented Symbols.com (a free Internet source). It is unnecessary for larger collections that already have scholarly sources such as Carl G. Liungman's Dictionary of Symbols (Norton, 1994), Hans Biedermann and James Hulbert's Dictionary of Symbolism: Cultural Icons and the Meaning behind Them (Facts On File, 1992), and Anthony Stevens' excellent, thematically arranged Ariadne's Clue: A Guide to the Symbols of Humankind (Princeton, 1999). A good reference

I took this course over a year ago as part of a tDPT program. I have mixed feelings about the textbook. I liked the comprehensiveness of the chapters to cover all systems. I like especially the detailed screens for each area which are very useful when I see a red flag that I am not commonly treating (ex. GI problems). I really appreciated the fetal development explanations for visceral pain radiating to musculoskeletal areas such as the shoulder and back. This book has certainly enhanced my evaluation skills. But I was surprised at the lack of good scientific referencing in the book. I think Boissinault makes a stronger textbook.

Very good book!

I am currently using this book in my 3rd year of PT school. The book has very good information, and is easy to read, unlike many textbooks. The book can be utilized by reading the entire chapters, or by reviewing the many tables and figures which organize signs/symptoms and important information in list form on different systemic diseases. There are many case study examples, which are interesting and very useful. Summaries at the end of the chapters and the practice questions are all very helpful. I highly recommend this book!

Adorable Book.

This is such a good book for bedtimes, while it has nothing to do with magic and fairies and what not. It is great to relax your childs mind and let them have dreams of the dinosaurs. While I do not agree with the fighting in it I understand what they are trying to do. So every night I let my 18month son pick which book I will read to him, 3 out of 10 times he picks this one. Let me add we have several books to choose from. I say it helps calm them down because there are not very many pictures in here to excite their brain, just your voice to calm them. ~~From Hatching to Exploration~~~

This is an outstanding story about Spike and his "family". It covers the hatching from the egg, the exploration of the wilderness, a big escape and also depicts the life of a baby dinosaur!

I thought the story was really cute and a couple of things caught my attention. Spike is not impressed with his older brother, Charger. You see Charger is the eldest of the babies and he thinks he is in charge. Well, after a butting of heads and a winner is declared, they become best friends. And, despite the warnings of their mother not to go into the wilderness, they both go exploring. Guess you can imagine where this one is going, right?

An excellent story for the little ones in your life and the author suggests it is for ages 3 - 10 and P - 4.

Wow! Spike the Dinosaur! Great for kids ages 3-10 for bedtime stories !

I. would recommend this ebook with five stars fro ages 3-10 as bedtime stories as they were so good and clean ebooks that even I much older enjoyed reading these animal stories who loves to read short neat ebooks like these! There were some very colorful photos in it! I thought. it was well done and
cute stories. I received this ebook for free and in exchange and having read it plan on giving it an honest review as always! Great job Uncle Amon!
