About the Author
Dr. Mamta Rawat M.Sc. Ph.D., Scientist and Head, Water & Health Program, Ecology and Rural Development Society, Jodhpur, Rajasthan is actively engaged in research activities on various health and environmental issues of Great Indian Desert of Rajasthan since 1999. Apart from this she has keen interest in the area of groundwater contaminations, eco-toxicology, water pollution, ecological engineering and wastewater treatment. She has received Fast Track Young Scientist Fellowship in year 2005 from Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India. Dr. Rawat is associated with various professional and scientific societies. Presently she is an editorial board member of “Indian Journal of Environment and Fisheries”. She has published more than 35 research papers in peer reviewed national and international journals, conferences, seminars and symposiums, and published two books. Dr. Sumit Dookia M.Sc. Ph.D., is working as Assistant Professor at Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, New Delhi. His doctoral research work is on the Ecology of Chinkara from Great Indian Desert. He worked as research fellow at Zoological Survey of India, Jodhpur in the research project titled “Studies on faunal communities of Great Indian Desert“. He also worked in Satpura-Maikal landscape, particularly in Kanha, Pench and Satpura Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh with Project Tiger Directorate, New Delhi and Wildlife Institute of India, Dehra Dun. He authored more than 40 research papers, in journals, as chaper in books, symposium and conferences. Dr. C. Sivaperuman M.Sc. D.B.T. Ph.D., is working as Scientist-D in Zoological Survey of India, Port Blair. He received Master Degree in Wildlife Biology from Bharathidasan University, Tamil Nadu. His doctorate degree is in Ecology of Wetland Birds in the Vembanad-Kole Ramsar site from (Kerala Forest Research Institute, Kerala) Forest Research Institute, Deemed University, Dehra Dun. He has worked in different parts of the country in various ecosystems, which includes Kerala, Rajasthan and Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Ty Colbert, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist and director of the Center for Psychological Alternatives to Biopsychiatry. One of the most helpful books I've ever read

The gist of this book is a contrast between what the author terms 'the medical model' (which claims that mental illnesses are biologically caused) and the 'emotional pain model' (which states that the causes of mental illnesses are to be found in emotional trauma and pain).
The first part of the book is a sound and detailed critique and repudiation of 'the medical model', while the rest of the book is devoted to an in-depth exposition of the 'emotional pain model'.
To me, it is really no great mystery why the psychiatric profession and society at large have chosen to believe that all mental illnesses are organic illnesses (i..e biologically caused), for that gives the simple and comforting illusion that these otherwise so perplexing and uncontrollable diseases have been understood and can be managed.
It's just another case of the apparently basic abhorrence of the human mind for uncertainty and lack of control.
Nevertheless, despite the (for so many) great and obvious appeal of the biological model, I think it is high time that we as individuals and as a society move away from it towards a sounder understanding of the causes of mental illness.
For the biological model IS an illusion, make no mistake about that! (as the author does an excellent job of demonstrating in the first part of the book).
While I do not believe that the emotional pain model can fully account for all mental disorders, I definitely think it is a huge step in the right direction.
As someone who has carried the label of 'chronic schizophrenic' for nearly ten years now, this book has been a real eye-opener for me, and has resulted in a much broader and more sensible understanding of the sources of my troubles than biopsychiatry can offer.
Highly recommended!

A clear critique of biopsychiatry

This book is very easy to read. It boils things down, but it is not simplistic. It incisively refutes the theoretical underpinnings of biopsychiatry, including the flawed and mis-stated studies which purport to show that "mental illness" is inherited, the simplistic and virtually unsupported chemical imbalance theories of "mental illness," and the myths and hype surrounding psychiatric drugs.
Colbert's own view of the causes and cures of "mental illness" is just one way of stating a general truth, but it zeroes in on the reality of what "mental illness" and its "cures" are all about. As he states at pages 116 and 117:
"1. We all hurt each other at times, both unintentionally and intentionally.
2.We all need others to heal those hurts.
3. We all deny to some extent how we hurt others, and how we need others to heal our hurts.
People create exotic theories about the causes of strange behavior and emotional disorders, because it's too uncomfortaable to admit our basic human need for each other, and because we don't like to face the fact that we can hurt and be hurt by our fellow humans....Let's not hide any longer behind our fancy theories and our often abusive cures. Let's learn what it takes to attend to and heal wounded hearts."
This may sound like wishful thinking, but Colbert makes plain that the real wishful thinking is done by biopshciatry, an edifice of mutually supporting empirical and logical errors, held together mainly by its adherents' own determination to be convinced of thier own preconceptions.
I have read twenty-five books on this subject, most more technical than this one. The beauty of this book is that it accurately conveys the essence of a technical subject without itself being technical.

Truly and Wholly Healing

Noticing than when he paid attention to the emotional pain that existed alongside a client's behaviour, the client's symptoms of paranoia disappeared, psychologist Ty Colbert realised that her behaviour was not "dysfunctional" but functioning quite effectively to protect her inner woundedness.
This contrasted strongly with proponents of the biopsychiatry who present models of supposed biological-defect or chemical-imbalance. They sound quite convincing until Dr Colbert looked deeper into the actual research and found the claims to be very weak indeed. Meanwhile, the list of so-called "mental disorders" keeps increasing as does the medication of them. In this model, pain is denied, symptoms surface, but are seen as the product of a defect and are suppressed medically.
Over 15 years he developed the "Emotional Pain Model" detailed in Broken Brains or Wounded Hearts - What Causes Mental Illness (Kevco, 1999). It represents a desire to take the mystery out of mental illness and provide a clear path for the future, allowing the reader to develop a proper understanding of any and all emotionally troubling conditions.
Dr Colbert proposes a three-phase model for eliminating emotional disorders and developing emotionally healthy children: People are taught to ientify feelings and resolve conflicts; Symptoms are seen as indicators of an overload of emotional pain; Non-medical, non-abusive healing environments are developed.
This book is an important contribution, validating an approach to therapy that is truly and wholly healing. As he says, "To see emotional disorders as diseases to be drugged is to hide from our own pain, as well as the pain of the afflicted .... The more we see and understand their pain, the more we will be able to see our own pain and become unafraid to reach out."

A good book for beginners

I bought this book because I needed to use GRASS and R to produce maps with the results of statistical analysis. Though I am an experienced programmer, I had never used R neither any GIS. The tutorials available on the Internet were enough to learn R, but GRASS was a brick wall.
After reading and trying the examples until page 200, I found myself able to work with raster and vectorial maps. Since I was completely illiterate on GIS, I learned in the book how the raster and vector data are organized, how to alter and combine maps and how to manage the vector databases. The sections about R and GRASS integration was very useful. Although it was of no particular interest to me, there are several sections about spatial analysis tools, 2D and 3D output, image processing and GRASS programing.
The book is not an exhaustive descriptions of the commands, which should be found on the GRASS documentation. It is more like a hands-on tutorial that makes you familiar with the system and the commands, even if you are novice. It will also be useful for people familiar with the graphic interface of other systems who need to start working with the command line.

OK Book, poor quality binding

The book covers many subjects broadly, from Remote Sensing, LIDAR as well as scanning historial maps. However, I found myself using the online users manual for the basics and step by step detail on HOW to use GRASS.

In addition, the binding of the book broke within 6 months, and about 25 pages fell out of the spine, with average use.

A very good introduction to the many capabilities of GRASS GIS

I waited several months for this 3rd edition of Neteler and Mitasova's 'Open Source GIS: A GRASS GIS Approach'. I'm not disappointed.

Pros:
1. The book is a major re-write of the earlier edition, and uses GRASS version 6.x - which has many improvements from earlier GRASS versions
2. It has tons of example applications, drawn and derived from an up-to-date sample dataset for North Carolina. Examples span the fields of hydrology, remote sensing,and a large number of standard GIS operations on vector and raster datasets.
3. It is well organized and succinct in its language.

Cons:
1. There are several typos.
2. Some of the examples may not exactly work on your own system - the authors acknowledge this, as each version of GRASS has some variations in dependent packages and libraries.
3. Some of the pages are not cross-referenced right.

To summarize:
I first used GRASS (version 4.3) in the year 2000. While I recognized back then how powerful GRASS is, I found it quite difficult to learn and to appreciate. In 2005-07, I revisited GRASS (version 6.0) for my dissertation research, and found that it had improved vastly. This book is an excellent way for readers to get a taste of how powerful GRASS 6.x is. It will be most useful for students and researchers who learn by doing - you will not learn GRASS (or any other GIS software) by just reading. Also, this book alone will not answer all your questions about GRASS - use the friendly and resourceful GRASS mailing lists for specific help with your own GRASS GIS projects.

Get into this book and GRASS GIS, only if you are willing to use the command line! If you are a programmer and are used to learning new languages/software, you probably do not need this book - the material on the GRASS website would be enough for you. If like me, you dont consider yourself a programmer but 'can do' when needed, this book will be very useful.

I hope that a more affordable paperback version of the third edition comes out!

A beautiful text and illustration of the magic and science of Liver Transplantation

The Atlas of Liver Transplantation is a beautiful text that presents the science and art of liver transplantation to the world of academic medicine and beyond. Dr. Molmenti cleverly incorporates detailed illustrations that go above and beyond what the limitations of photography can provide in descriptive medical education.

This text is not limited merely to surgical technique but is a comprehensive approach to the whole space of liver transplantation including the supportive disciplines of anesthesia and hematology.

As a student of the History of Organ Transplantation I found this book to be the current state-of-the state presentation of this discipline. Not only is this a "must have" for any surgical resident considering this advanced field but a useful inclusion to the book shelf to any surgical resident, medical student or lover of academic medicine.
