Ahead of the game

This book is very easy to understand, well written and on the cutting edge of swimming. I have read many books on the subject of swimming and most try to get you to swim in one particular way. This is the first book that I have seen that encourages you to swim in the fashion that works best for you depending on a few factors such as body type, the particular distance that you are doing, and whether you are swimming in a pool or open water.
I could not put it down and I think that it will be a best seller among swimmers, triathletes and their coaches. It is a must read! But the best part was that I was able to get it instantly for $9.99 on my kindle instead of pre-ordering for $19.37.
One thing that should be edited is that on the kindle edition it is hard to read some of the captions on one or two pages.

Best modern freestyle swim book

I am a recreational swimmer who tried to relearn to swim better back in 1998 from Terry Laughlin's book. I have never been on a swim team to get good coaching advice.

I have recently looked at a few new and old how-to-swim books. The newer advice is quite different from the older books which encouraged habits that can easily lead to shoulder injuries.

1)
A new book "Swim Smooth" has the most modern advice of all, along with a fine web site swimsmooth.com with a super free app you can download and watch from any angle and at very slow speed (esp from underneath to see the difference from the old S-shape recommended arm movement for the crawl). Looking through this book a few days ago already has led to a major revision of my freestyle.
You can get the essential info from this fun book by just looking at the numerous pictures and reading the captions.
My self-taught freestyle stroke has several major flaws, eg. I should not angle my hand sideways on entry which can injure the shoulder and I should not cross the center line on arm extension or pushback (some old books show the arm crossing horizontally under the body) which loses propulsion and leads to being off balance. The entry angle should be at a steep approx 45 degree angle and the hand should tip down for the catch right after full extension (instead of gliding more). And forget about a sideways scull and S-shape arm movement (update: I have added back a partial S movement which seems to flow better with increased speeds if you use fins, plus Olympic swimmers do that too).
Anyway, the book "Swim Smooth" and web site (with the downloaded MrSmooth app) is my top choice for a relearn-to-swim-freestyle book for amateurs who have no coach.

Next in line is the excellent second edition of "Fitness Swimming", pages 1-69, page 86, and pages 119-120 (the rest is workout schedules). This book has by far the best compact explanation of the theory and guidelines for the modern injury-free freestyle . It finally explained to me exactly how to accomplish the 2-beat kick as well as the unfathomable (from other books) 6-beat kick.

Then there's the other modern swim book that I re-learned to swim from in 1998. Too bad in that book (or even his latest one) there is no good description of the arc the hand travels (ie. S-shape or not) or fundamental principles like the hand must always be inside the elbow distance (otherwise .. injury) and the similar dangers of angling the hand on entry, or of the merits of a steeper hand entry (but see his DVD below). Terry Laughlin's books (latest best all-stroke intro is called "Extraordinary Swimming for every body") have been adopted widely and I still would recommend this book as one of the several must-have's for someone still learning to swim better. If I was teaching someone to swim from ground zero, I would use the exercises to lead up to the crawl in that book's freestyle chapter (which are easier to see/appreciate in the bigger format "Total Immersion Pool Primer", basically drills in balance and body rotation) or in Terry's DVD "Perpetual Motion Freestyle in 10 Lessons", which teaches how to swim by progressive enhancement of fundamental balance and propulsion skills. The graduated drills are clearly demonstrated and the progression to developing the complete stroke and 2-beat flick kick is logical.

4)
"Learn to Swim in a Weekend" is a super compact (90 pages), all-picture guide to the major strokes plus turning and diving, about 8 easy to look at pages per stroke type. This is a fun book to look through and the pictures are superb in showing the essentials of each stroke.

So those are the 4 most essential how-to-swim or how-to-relearn-to-swim-better books I've discovered.

Then there's the very old swimming book "Swimming: Steps to Success" which has some bad crawl advice (which was considered good advice in the 1960's), but includes a few non-major strokes such as the sidestroke and the Double Trudgen which I'll learn sometime to amaze folks - I mean, who really knows that stroke nowadays other than ocean lifeguards! The third edition of this book has not changed from the very old first edition, so do not expect modern swimming advice.

History: the first-ever "modern" swim book was "Complete Book of Swimming" by James Counsilman (1979) which authors since have liberally copied text from. This was "the" modern theory and how to swim book until the 1990's and has held up remarkably well, plus it's fun to see pictures of Mark Spitz's swim strokes.

Great book, great folks who wrote it, excellent help!

Amazing book. It clearly identified so many issues I have with swimming after getting back in the water after 20 years. I'm training for a triathlon and swimming is my weak area so I need to work on it. I'll come back and update the review as I go further through it but I've already determined what type I am and all of it was dead bang on. I've used several of the exercises and it is definitely helping to increase confidence. They explain things so anyone can understand. The drills make sense and move you along well enough you don't feel like you are taking everything soooooo sllllloooowwwwwwllllyyy you are bored. The most frequently recommended book to me from other triathletes is the Total Immersion: The Revolutionary Way To Swim Better, Faster, and Easier but that seemed to want me to lengthen my stroke and I could not get the rhythm of breathing to work with such a longer stroke. I'm very short and petite and it just wasn't working. Also I read so many blogs and info that it took people YEARS to get comfortable and be a better swimmer with TI so the advice was don't give up. That's great but I'm just not that patient. I want to be able to build, see progress, and I want my swimming to be based on me and how it works best for me.

I bought the Easy Freestyle Swimming by Terry Laughlin but really struggled to get through it. It was so very very boring and I didn't feel like I was making any progress other than comfort in the water. I actually fell asleep watching it three times. I really wanted to love it because it comes so highly recommended...and I did take some advice away but I did not feel it was going (on my own) to really help me. I think with TI I need to find a clinic and a coach so I can do it in person. Perhaps it is much better that way.

I then bought the SwimSmooth DVD Boxset, Learn to Swim DVD, and Catch Masterclass - and the lights clicked on. I had already read the book and was doing many of the drills. Their verbal cue system just works for me. They show the wrong way to do the technique and give many pointers. I also liked, and this worked for me, that sometimes you do something as a reaction to something else. I was scissor kicking because my hands were going across my body on entry and below the water and it was the way I was trying to balance. Once I read/watched that I immediately was able to work on fixing it. Not the kick - the stroke and follow through - which fixed the kick no problem.

Of the two programs (TI or this one) I strongly prefer this one because the idea we are all unique and not one stroke or way to swim will fit everyone just "fits" me. 5 very strong stars. If you have to buy one book on swimming and you are working towards any sort of competition or you want to learn strongly (vs. just getting a workout - I was doing that but still gasping after 50 meters!) I recommend Swim Smooth.

They have a great website and when I had a question about something I wanted to order they emailed right back and were very encouraging. It felt personal. I feel like I can do it. In SS terms I'm a bambino and I'm following many drills and my swimming has improved by leaps and bounds and I'm looking to continue that pathway.

French author/illustrator Barroux Found A Soldier's Diary Among Some Belongings Being Discarded On The Street And Decided To Depict This Young Man's Words In The Graphic Novel Format. The Diary Covers The First Two Months Of World WarI, as seen from the perspective of a French infantryman. The story is both fascinating and frustrating, as we read about the boredom and confusion experienced by soldiers who spend most of their time walking, digging trenches, waiting for letters, looking for shelter, and wondering where the war is, exactly. Once in a while they will see a plane overhead, or hear artillery fire off in the distance, or have to hide from the enemy. Instead of the usual "big picture" focus garnered from textbooks, readers see the war as a microcosm, as told by one of its thousand moving parts. Barroux's illustrations were created with thick butcher's pencil on watercolor paper, which were then covered with a tinted varnish. The overall effect is of black-and-white drawings seen through a sepia-toned filter, which make the pictures look as old as the story itself. A day in the life

Apparently the artist Barroux found this diary of an unknown French soldier from WW1 as he was walking past a house having a clear out - the diary was amid the junk headed for a landfill! He took it home, illustrated the diary and this is the book: Line of FIre: Diary of an Unknown Soldier.

The diary covers the first two months of the conflict from France’s declaration of war to September 1914. The diary is sparse with only a line or two to describe the soldier’s day but, as Michael Morpurgo (author of War Horse) points out in his introduction, the soldier was no Sassoon or Owens, trying to make art from his experiences, he was simply describing his everyday lot. As a result we get a very clear-cut view of his day to day life.

The first half of the book reads a bit like a description of the world’s worst package holiday. The soldier signs up, is transported near the front to fight the Prussians, but spends most of the time doing exercises, digging trenches, and looking for food and a decent place to spend the night. He occasionally mentions his family and that he receives bad news and then good news from them but we never know exactly what that means.

Gradually he mentions scenes of bombed out towns, empty shells littering fields, impromptu graves, and the sounds and lights of explosions keeping him up at night, so we experience his progress getting closer to the front at the same pace that he does.

There’s a very humanistic scene when he finally sees battle and discovers he’s been shot in the arm. He holds out a bandage pack out to a fellow soldier he doesn’t know, who’s also not a medic, who immediately sees to his arm, even with shells and mortars flying around them. And yet its told in a very matter of fact tone which makes it all the more touching.

The diary ends abruptly in September 1914 with the soldier recovering from his wounds and feeling depressed that the German army has gotten so close to his home town. Did he die shortly after? Did he lose interest in keeping a diary? Did he see out the war and live happily ever after? We’ll never know. Barroux does mention that accompanying the diary was a notebook of songs that continues until May 1917 so, assuming it also belonged to the same soldier, perhaps the soldier made it that long.

Barroux’s art is quite child-like - triangles for noses, a dot and a line for eyes, blanks for mouths - and the pencil and ink sepia tone adds a poignant sense of time to it. I’ve never seen Barroux’s art before so I don’t know if he’s intentionally keeping things as spare as the writing but the style perfectly suits the material.

It’s 100 years ago this year that WW1 began and yet forgotten mementos from that war still pop up and its unknown ghosts continue to speak to us in voices as fresh and human as any you’d hear today. I wouldn’t say Line of Fire is an amazing first hand account of the war, mostly because of the brevity of the writing, but it is a good example of living history and it does remind us of the mundanity of war as much as its horrors. Line of Fire is a brief but insightful look into the day-to-day life of a WW1 soldier.

Beautiful and well-made Tarot deck!

First off, this deck is a HUGE bargain. You get both a unique, gorgeous set of cards, and a well-bound guide book for just $24. It's the perfect deck for animal lovers and/or beginners who want something different than the usual Tarot deck!

The cards are matte, vibrant, and made of a sturdy cardstock material. The illustrations themselves are amazing and the artist definitely knows how to use colors in a minimalistic yet rich, dynamic way. Also, the deck & guide containers are sturdy too.

I've added pictures of all of my favorite cards from the deck (they look better in real life, trust me).

Beautiful set, thin cards.

I would give this set 5 stars on art, packaging, and content, but 2 on the quality of the cards. They're so flimsy I'm afraid to shuffle them even once. I really don't understand why they did that because the Box and the book and the small box that the cards actually set in are top notch in quality and durability. I really don't get why they would use such a thin cardstock. That being said, don't let that deter you from buying the set. Everything else is way beyond expectations. It's really nice.

Of course amazing

The wild unknown has been my favorite deck for years even though I do own two copy's of the first and second printing I knew I had to get this one too. I think they did a amazing job. The hard box that holds the book is just perfect and thank for for still having the hard box for the cards. This is amazing packaging and of course I love the deck. The cards are a little thinner but I kinda knew that might happen. They are not horrible at all though and they shuffle better than her own printed decks do so that part is great. Even better. I love all of her work and I buy anything Kim puts out. Thank you so much I love them.

Feeling Overwhelmed...How to Turn It Around

Often in life, events occur that we truly can't control. The company we're working for "downsizes" and we get laid off. Our spouse leaves us. A family member becomes ill, or someone close to us dies. The government cuts a program we've depended on. In these situations, we may feel as if there is simply nothing we can do to make things better.

Maybe you've had the experience of trying everything you knew to get a job, to help your family, to find your soulmate, or just to feel happier. But nothing seemed to work. When we try a new approach, try our best, yet we still fail to reach our goal, often we fear trying again. Why? Because we all want to avoid pain! And nobody wants to fail again. Nobody wants to give his or her all, only to be disappointed. Often, after many of these experiences of disappointment, we stop trying! We get to the point where we believe that nothing will work.

If you find yourself at the point where you're not even willing to try, you've put yourself in a place called "learned helplessness." You've literally learned -- or taught yourself -- that you're "helpless."

The good news is that you're wrong. You can make things happen! You can change anything in your life today by changing your perceptions and changing your actions.

"I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward."

The first step to turning your life around is getting rid of this negative belief that you can't do anything or that you're helpless. How can you do that? Often the reason that people say they can't do something is that they've tried things in the past that haven't worked. But remember -- and I've used this phrase again and again throughout my life -- YOUR PAST DOES NOT EQUAL YOUR FUTURE. What matters is not yesterday but what you do right now. So many people are trying to drive into the future using a rearview mirror to guide themselves! If you do that, you'll crash. Instead you must focus on what you can do today to make things better.

Persistence Pays

Many people tell me, "I've tried millions of ways to succeed, and nothing works!" Or, "I've tried thousands of ways!" Think about it. They probably haven't even tried hundreds of ways to change things, or even dozens. Most people have tried eight, nine, ten ways to make a change, and when it hasn't worked out, they've given up.

The key to success is to decide what's most important to you and then take massive action each day to make it better, even when it doesn't look as if it's working.

I'll give you an example. Have you ever heard of a guy named Colonel Sanders? Of course you have. How did Colonel Sanders become such an unbelievable success? Was it because he was born wealthy? Was his family rich? Did they send him to a top university like Harvard? Maybe he was successful because he started his business when he was really young. Are any of these true?

The answer is no. Colonel Sanders didn't begin to fulfill his dream until he was 65 years old! What drove him to finally take action? He was broke and alone. He got his first Social Security check for $105, and he got mad. But instead of blaming society or just writing Congress a nasty note, he started asking himself, "What could I do that would be valuable for other people? What could I give back?" He started thinking about what he had that was valuable to others.

His first answer was, "Well, I have this chicken recipe everyone seems to love! What if I sold my chicken recipe to restaurants? Could I make money doing that?" Then he immediately thought, "That's ridiculous. Selling my recipe won't even pay the rent." And he got a new idea: "What if I not only sold them my recipe but also showed them how to cook the chicken properly? What if the chicken was so good that it increased their business? If more people came to see them and they made more chicken sales, maybe they would give me a percentage of those additional sales."

Many people have great ideas. But Colonel Sanders was different. He was a man who didn't just think of great things to do. He put them into action. He went and started knocking on doors, telling each restaurant owner his story: "I've got a great chicken recipe, and I think if you use it, it'll increase your sales. And I'd like to get a percentage of that increase."

Well, many people laughed in his face. They said, "Look, old man, get out of here. What are you wearing that stupid white suit for?" Did Colonel Sanders give up? Absolutely not. He had the # 1 key to success; I call it personal power. Personal power means being persistent in taking action: Every time you do something, you learn from it, and you fred a way to do it better next time. Colonel Sanders certainly used his personal power! Instead of feeling bad about the last restaurant that had rejected his idea, he immediately started focusing on how to tell his story more effectively and get better results from the next restaurant.

How many times do you think Colonel Sanders heard no before getting the answer he wanted? He was refused 1,009 times before he heard his first yes. He spent two years driving across America in his old, beat-up car, sleeping in the back seat in his rumpled white suit, getting up each day eager to share his idea with someone new. Often, the only food he had was a quick bite of the samples he was preparing for prospective buyers. How many people do you think would have gone for 1,009 noes -- two years of noes! -- and kept on going? Very few. That's why there's only one Colonel Sanders. I think most people wouldn't get past twenty noes, much less a hundred or a thousand! Yet this is sometimes what it takes to succeed.

If you look at any of the most successful people in history, you will find this common thread: They would not be denied. They would not accept no. They would not allow anything to stop them from making their vision, their goal, a reality. Did you know that Walt Disney was turned down 302 times before he got financing for his dream of creating "The Happiest Place on Earth"? All the banks thought he was crazy. He wasn't crazy; he was a visionary and, more important, he was committed to making that vision a reality. Today, millions of people have shared in "the joy of Disney," a world like no other, a world launched by the decision of one man.

When I lived in my crummy little apartment, washing my dishes in the bathtub, I had to keep reminding myself of these kinds of stories. I had to keep reminding myself that NO PROBLEM IS PERMANENT. NO PROBLEM AFFECTS MY ENTIRE LIFE. THIS TOO SHALL PASS IF I CONTINUE TO TAKE MASSIVE, POSITIVE, CONSTRUCTIVE ACTION. I kept thinking, "Even though my life looks terrible right now, there are many things to be thankful for, like the two friends I have, or the fact that I have all my senses, or that I can breathe fresh air." I constantly reminded myself to focus on what I wanted, to focus on solutions instead of problems. And I remembered that no problem affects my entire life, even though it may look like it right now.

So I decided I would no longer believe that my whole life was screwed up simply because I had financial difficulties or emotional frustrations. I decided that there was nothing wrong with me, but that I was simply in "lag time." In other words, I knew that if I were to continue nurturing the seeds I had planted -- continue doing the right things -- I would make it out of this winter of my life and into spring, when I would reap the rewards of years of seemingly fruitless efforts. I also decided that doing exactly the same things over and over again and expecting a different result was insane. I had to try something new, and I had to keep on until I found the answers I needed.

My message to you is simple, and in your heart you know it's true: Massive, consistent action with pure persistence and a sense of flexibility in pursuing your goals will ultimately give you what you want, but you must abandon any sense that there is no solution. You must focus immediately on the actions you can take today, even if they are small ones.

This makes sense, doesn't it? So why don't more people follow the advice of the Nike ad and just do it? The answer is that they've been shut down by fear of failure. But I've discovered something wonderful about failure....

I was pleasantly surprised!

I’ve seen some of Tony Robbins’ videos, and have read some of his books. I hadn’t read this book and thought I’d give it a try, more out of disbelief in the title: Notes from a Friend “A Quick and Simple Guide to Taking Charge of Your Life.” Being a counselor, I know that taking charge of your life isn’t all that quick or easy. Also, I didn’t need another huge book to read…I just didn’t have the time. The book was a welcomed surprise. With its total 103 pages, it is a quick and easy read. In his true motivational style, Tony Robbins writes this book as more of a guide to help anyone take charge of their life. Each chapter is a “lesson” with the last lesson challenging the reader to participate in a ten-day mental challenge. The book was so easy to read, and with its very well written message, I ordered one as gift for my son. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to make a positive change in their life or someone else’s life.

This book changed my life. I'm not a big Anthony Robbins fan. I used to be in corporate sales so I bought this book looking for ideas to improve my sales. I didn't learn how to sell more or create wealth. Instead, I learned how to change my life and improve my perspective on things. If you are depressed or are unhappy with your life and you want to change, this book will help you do so. It teaches you how to break bad habits and inspire you to change. Any time, I'm in a bad mood or I feel helpless, I read this book and it completely motivates you and provides you with confidence. There are no gimics in this book. Tony Robbins doesn't really tell you anything you didn't already know. Rather, it's HOW he tells things. He uses real life examples and people we are familiar with like the guy who started Kentucky Fried Chicken and Honda autos so he is not just giving you motivation gibberish. His advice is based on his discussions with real people who achieved success in life. I'm in medicine today which is a completey different field but I still refer back to this book. It is a gem

Low Quality

Terrible book. Tons of typos, grammatical errors, and flat-out incorrect information. If you need this book for a class, only rent. If you are looking at this book of your own free will, DO NOT even consider it. There are tons of great marketing textbooks out there, and this isn't one of them.

EDIT: and as I near the end of the term, it's worth noting that this textbook has the most typos of ANY book that I have ever read, and this is the 6TH EDITION. It's insane what they're charging for this book. Do not even consider buying.

Editing sorely needed!

I bought the 6th edition of this book for my college course. The concepts and information covered in the textbook are sound and useful, but the book is riddled with editing errors. Hundreds of words are missing from sentences throughout and there are grammatical errors as well. I found these to be very distracting and they are ruining an otherwise good book. The book needs a TREMENDOUS amount of editing work. I hope the authors/publishers read this and hire better editors for the next edition. I rated this book with three stars overall because the content itself is good. I would give the editing one star (or less).

This book sucks

This book is pretty terrible. It is an extremely frustrating read, as it is littered with grammatical errors. Many sentences are missing words, and do not make sense at all. I'm glad to see that these authors are charging top dollar for books, but can't be bothered to proof-read them before publishing.

About the Author
David J. Hand is an emeritus professor of mathematics and a senior research investigator at Imperial College London. He is the former president of the Royal Statistical Society and the chief scientific adviser to Winton Capital Management, one of Europe's most successful algorithmic-trading hedge funds. He is the author of seven books, including The Information Generation: How Data Rules Our World and Statistics: A Very Short Introduction, and has published more than three hundred scientific papers. Hand lives in London, England.

"It Can't Happen" Happens All the Time

Years ago my wife was looking through the books at a Goodwill store, and for a gag gift for my birthday she bought me a volume of poems by Rod McKuen, whose work I do not like. Helen brought it home and was going to wrap it when she looked inside. There was a dedication in the book signed by the author himself: “To Rob - May you always sleep warm. --Rod McKuen.” Now I have a volume of McKuen’s poetry I cannot throw away, but more to the point, how is it possible that completely by chance that she should pick up such a book bearing a dedication to someone of the same name? It just does not seem that such a thing could happen. It’s the sort of story told many times in _The Improbability Principle: Why Coincidences, Miracles, and Rare Events Happen Every Day_ (Scientific American / Farrar, Straus and Giroux) by mathematician David Hand. Hand knows that it is tough to write about mathematics for the layman, perhaps even more so for probability which he says “is renowned for its counterintuitive nature, more than any other area of mathematics. Even the most eminent mathematicians have been tripped up by it.” Yet there are few equations here, there are many astounding stories, and many of Hand’s explanations are drawn from tossing a humble die.

The book starts with its main contradiction, only a seeming contradiction and one of many explained away within these pages: How is it possible that extremely unlikely things happen, and not only happen, but happen over and over? Hand gives satisfying answers, but besides being a book about extraordinarily improbable events, this is also a book that explains probability in general. Take the law of inevitability: Something has to happen. In a lottery, each possible ticket has so tiny a chance of winning that you might think it a miracle if yours is the one chosen. But what _is_ certain is that some ticket will be picked to win (or if not, the stakes will be raised for the next draw when there will be a winner). It is thus dead certain that an improbable event will occur. There’s the law of truly large numbers: if there are enough possible opportunities, any outrageously unlikely event can happen. If you toss a coin enough times, and have a near-eternity to do so, you will get a run of a hundred heads; it simply has to happen. These are understood strictly with probability theory, but we have also to supplement our “understanding” of rare events by human foibles. The law of selection, for instance, says that you can make probabilities as high as you like, in retrospect. It’s like shooting arrows into the side of a barn and then painting bullseyes around each one. All of us are liable, too, to confirmation bias; we notice events that reinforce what we wish to believe and we disregard data that does not fit. Prophets and astrologers harness this tendency all the time. And sometimes we use bad equipment for our research. Federal law has specific and strict rules for every die thrown in a casino, but dice you get in a Monopoly set are far from such strict engineering and they have bias; research into psychokinesis, the ability to control die tosses, has been criticized because it used ordinary dice.

Readers of Hand’s book will have a happy tour of many aspects of probability, delivered by a guide who is knowledgeable and funny. Even if some of the math gets by you, the astonishing stories are sure to impress you, like the ones about people who have won the lottery more than once. Spare a little sympathy, however, for Maureen Wilcox, who in 1980 bought lottery tickets in both the states of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. She picked all the right numbers, too. Except the numbers she picked for Rhode Island won in Massachusetts, and vice versa.

Dull as it gets

I've read a lot of books on statistics, both texts for work and more casual books for entertainment value. This is among the worst that I have read.

The examples are dull, recycled, and mostly uninteresting. The concepts seem too basic for the length of the book. And in the end it just is not interesting. Pass on this one.

When I read one star reviews, I often wish the reviewers would tell me what they did enjoy, so that I could calibrate their review and, potentially, so that I could find something better. So here I'll do that. Here are two books of similar nature, both of which are far better than The Improbability Principle:
1, The Drunkard's Walk, by Leonard Mlodinow
2, Fooled by Randomness, by Nassim Taleb

Perception versus Reality: An Excellent Overview

This is a book on statistics but without the mathematical details. The author explains the occurrence of events that one would expect to be extremely rare but, do in fact occur more frequently that anticipated. The author’s “improbably principle”, which is at the heart of this book, is composed of several strands: the law of inevitability, the law of truly large numbers, the law of selection, the law of the probability lever and the law of near enough. These laws are each carefully explained by the author and several useful examples are presented to illustrate each one.

No formulas are used in this book. To be honest, I found that a bit disappointing being an avid mathematics enthusiast. However, it seems clear that the author’s objective is to drive his point home in the simplest and most widely accessible way possible. And in this he succeeds admirably.

The author, a professor of mathematics with specialization in statistics, writes very clearly in a friendly, engaging and often lively style. Because if its wide accessibility, I believe that this book can be enjoyed by any interested readers, no matter what their background. Science and mathematics enthusiasts, like me, although possibly disappointed by the lack of mathematical minutiae, should still be in for a treat. I enjoyed this book immensely.
